Midland Cairn Terrier Championship Show 2024

It was five years ago whilst lying next to the pool in Golf Del Sur, Tenerife, that I got the call inviting me to judge this special 40th Anniversary show. Let’s just say there was a few extra cocktails that evening, not that Mrs Shaw needs a good reason.

When I arrived at the show, I felt I was in a time warp. The hall was buzzing. Lots of exhibitors, spectators, and the cairns were chatting away to each other. It had that proper club show feel and the committee should be congratulated for their organising skills. I know what is involved in trying to bring all the loose ends together. Special thanks to my stewards, Chris (Honorary Scotsman for the day) and Sue, for their sterling work; to all the exhibitors and spectators for their generous applause for each class, and; for the generous way my placings were accepted in that true sportsmanship way our breed is noted for.

After my six-year sabbatical, most exhibits were new to me. My general impression was that we have very varied types, from the long to the short-legged. Heads were in general fine, although many lacked that desired “stop” to enhance expression and some big round eyes have appeared. Mouths, which are so important to a terrier, were good. Most had large teeth and scissor bites. Coats were varied as would be expected and I made allowances if the texture was good. I did have some lovely free-flowing exhibits moving true in front and behind. However, some exhibits who would have done better were let down by their handlers which was frustrating for me.

I was pleased with both lineups and some lovely comments afterwards with the “We could follow what you were looking for”, which is nice to hear. Showing and presenting a cairn is not easy. In fact, it can be very challenging. My grateful thanks to everyone who made the journey through a storm to support the Midland CTC on their special day.

Best in Show and Best Puppy: Felter & Rumen’s “Landbuck Sabrage”

Although not quite a year old, this youngster ticked all the boxes for me. Stunning head piece with lovely shape and colour of eye. Neat ears and plenty of stop. Super mouth, with a cheeky expression. I wouldn’t want him any bigger but he takes your eye for balance and is so well constructed. Lovely front movement, neck and shoulders. Super topline which he holds on the move. Drives from the rear with a good bend of stifle and short hocks. In full coat of good quality. He has real ring presence and I was totally smitten and wish him well for the future.

Reserve Best in Show and BOS: Goud’s “Vale of Atholl’s Swing in the Blanket”

Two and a half year old with a beautiful head and varmity expression. Ideal size with super balance, length to height ratio. Moves well in front on good legs and feet. Ok for bone. CAIRN TERRIER ASSOCIATION CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW
17th NOVEMBER 2024
JUDGES CRITIQUE

Breed Club Shows are always very special and I would like to thank the Officers and Committee of the Cairn Terrier Association for inviting me to judge their Championship Show. This was a very opportune appointment as I had already decided to retire from judging by April 2025. A change of venue at short notice, albeit it to a known one, is never ideal, however everything went smoothly with the ever efficient steward, Sharon Confue, keeping things flowing. My thanks go to all the exhibitors for their support, both Open classes were exceptional, 9 Champions entered in Open Dog and 5 in Open Bitch.
As always bitches outnumbered dogs with several of the lower classes having no entries, which makes me wonder where the stud dogs of the future will come from? In general conformation was good, although a few overweight. A couple of things to watch, tail set and light eyes. Presentation in a few was far from good, more general grooming needed and also some rather ‘smelly’ exhibits. Coats varying as usual, a coat of the right texture coming in is preferably to a blown coat.

BPD/B 3 (1) Litter sisters just over 4 months old, both enjoying their debut and both doing all that was asked of them, one just slightly more confident
1 Dolan’s GLENROOD IT HAS TO BE ME 2 Firths’ GLENROOD SILENT WHISPERER TAF

VD/B 2 1 Smith’s CANWOOD MISTY DAWN AT GETHLEE B A favourite of mine in her younger days, well presented and in good coat, plenty of muscle she moved with verve. BVIS 2 Metcalf-Saut’s CANWOOD CALL ME AGGIE B Rather more matronly than 1, attractive head, in good coat but a little portly.

MPD 0

PD 3 1 Felters & Rumens’ LANDBUCK SABRAGE 10 months, well grown smart puppy with good head, correct bite and excellent construction throughout. Shown in full coat, just needs to tighten up in movement but that will come with maturity. BPD & RBPIS 2 Firths’ CAIRNGOLD CARSON 8 months, rather plainer in head at the moment, in good coat, well made body, preferred the movement of 1 3 Inett & Harrisons’ CARRADINE BRIGHT CIDER LIFE

JD 0

ND 0

PGD 5 Very mixed class, difficult to judge
1 Roberts’ CANNWOOD MOONLIGHT SHADOW Masculine head with dark points, correct mouth, ear set and eye colour & shape, decent neck and lay back, level topline, correct texture coat, best mover in this class. RDCC 2 Thomas & Jones’ TYCADNO NEW TRICKS Different type, rather shorter on the leg, lovely head, presented in good coat, gave a good account of himself. 3 Parker-Tucker’s UNIQUECOTTAGE GREY SHISO

LD 4 1 Byrne’s CARRADINE HOWZAT HOWARD Strong masculine head with good stop ear set and mouth, decent length of neck into correct layback and level topline. Plenty of bone and well muscled. In good coat and moved with drive. Not the easiest dog to show but at one with his handler today. 2 Thomas’ TYCADNO MAGIC MAN Another with a strong masculine head, all in proportion and well furnished, sufficient bone, top line OK, presented in excellent coat, gave his handler a hard time today and not moving as well as he should.

OD 10(2) What a lovely super class, I felt honoured to have so many lovely Champions in the ring.
1 Parker-Tucker’s Ch UNIQUECOTTAGE GREY BORAGE Honest workmanlike dog, late maturer now really making his mark. Have admired him from the ringside and I wasn’t disappointed. He is so well put together, he is all I look for in a Cairn dog, shown in full coat, he moved with plenty of drive. A great credit to his breeder/handler. A pleasure to award him the DCC & BIS 2 Waites, Dennis & Goddards’ Ch GOOD TIMES AHEAD WITH OUDENARDE A worthy Champion, another who has matured well since I judged him in 2021, strong masculine head, well angulated and muscled throughout, just a bit short of coat today. 3 Yates-Johnson’s Ch PENDLEY SEAFARER

SBD/B 2 1 Sinclair & Tothills’ TYCADNO QUICK SHOT D Well proportioned head with keen expression, angulations OK, in excellent coat, tail set quite high which rather spoils the overall picture. Showed and handled well. 2 Metcalf-Sault’s CANWOOD QUIET REFLECTIONS B Feminine head with dark points, bit short of coat today, movement OK

MPB 5(2) 1 Hughes’ GYNCAIRN DANCING IN THE DARK 8 months Lovely feminine head of right proportions, adequate neck and good front, everything as it should be at this age, in good coat, very promising 2 Waugh’s TRIBANNON ANGEL’S KISS 6 months Attractive dark puppy, again a lovely feminine head, adequate length of neck, well up on the leg, a bit short coupled for me. Very showy. 3 Firths’ CAIRNGOLD CLAIM TO FAME

PB 5 1 Thomas’ TYCADNO WINTER STAR Her last show as a puppy and she impressed. Head with correct proportions, excellent bone and angulations, level topline, in very good well presented coat, moved with drive and never stopped showing. Delighted to give her the RBCC & BPIS 2 Felters & Rumens’ LANDBUCK AMETHYST 10 months another promising bitch, well grown, similar remarks apply as her litter brother (1 PD) very showy but didn’t hold her topline so well as 1 3 Petts’ DOONRAE ULTRA VIOLET

JB 2 1 Thomas’ CASTLELINE SEREN AT TYCADNO Very well made balanced bitch, lovely head & expression, good fore chest & length of neck into level topline, excellent coat & showed very well. 2 Thompson’s CASTLELINE CARIAD Litter sister to 1, similar remarks apply, but would like a little more length of neck to give a more balanced outline.

PGB 8(1) Difficult class to judge, my line up didn’t really ‘match’
1 Osborn’s BE GIN AGAIN AT TWESLAM Attractive bitch with lovely expressive head, correct front and layback, level topline held on the move, in good coat, can give her handler a bit of a hard time. 2 Parker-Tucker’s UNIQUECOTTAGE RED CHERVIL overall a good sound well made bitch, super well presented coat, sadly just doesn’t always give her best 3 Ballinger’s CLOVERBROOK FORGET ME NOT

LB 7 1 Parker-Tucker’s BIRSELAW FLORAL DANCER OF UNIQUECOTTAGE Very typical of one of the most successful kennels of the past, beautiful head with correct proportions, decent fore chest, good bone, neck and lay back of shoulders, level topline, moved with plenty of drive. Serious contender for the RCC but sadly she was inclined to fly her ears which spoils the overall outline. 2 Smith’s CLOVERBROOK SHINING STAR OVER GETHLEE I really liked this bitch, expressive head, good fore chest, bone and angulations. Well muscled, she moved with drive. Presented in excellent coat, showing well. 3 Shannon & Storr’s BRENNDARCY WITCHES PROMISE

OB 8(1) Quality class
1 Shaw’s Ch TYCADNO STAR ATTRACTION AT HONEYHALL Stunning bitch, beautiful feminine head with dark eyes and small ears, best of fronts, shoulders & layback. Strong level top line retained on the move. Tail set just right, her movement is a joy to watch. A little short of coat but her overall quality could not be denied, at one with her handler. BCC, BOS & RBIS 2 Firths’ Ch CAIRNGOLD CHIQUITITA Striking red with attractive head, good fore chest, decent neck and shoulders, level top line, moved and showed well. She has matured nicely since I last judged her. 3 Yates-Johnson’s Ch PENDLEY SEA BREEZE

Championship Show 20th October 2024

I would like to thank the officers and committee for the invitation to judge their show again – after a twenty year gap, Sharon for stewarding, and the exhibitors for entering and the sporting way they accepted my decisions.  It was a wonderful entry for these days, it’s encouraging there are a nice few puppies coming in the ring now.  Judging cairns is not easy, the difference in size, they don’t like standing still – not in their nature, if you want to look one way they look the other.  I had some lovely cairns to judge, than you – several decision were close…..

Judge: Kevin Brown (Denmark)

My thanks to the Society for the invitation to judge at their show, also a big thanks to my friendly and efficient stewards who kept the ring running smoothly. The following is meant as constructive criticism, which hopefully helps the Breed!Heads in many were plain and forefaces too long and snipy, a few also had doubtful bites. Front construction has not improved in the majority since I last judged, incorrect shoulder angulation the cause and many lacking reach. Many dogs were too narrow in body, lacking the spring of rib so required for good lung capacity. Hindquarters in many were lacking in flexibility and drive, looking quite stilted in movement. While I know coats are just a temporary part of the dog and vary with individuals, condition and time of the year, many require a good ‘tidying up’ to be more presentable. Sadly handling in many disappointed and left much to be desired, poor handling lets the dog down and the breed. Many require more table training, the breed standard calls for “standing well forward on forepaws”, not stacked like a rocking horse. Lead training is poor with many pulling all over the place, unable to walk in a straight line, letting themselves down when we had such a large ring to use. Come on Cairn breeders, time to improve.

VD 1(0) 1. Lamb/Saltmarsh’s Birselaw Come Dancing with Macmoon. Dark brindle with a really nice head, well defined stop, dark eye. Well place ears and correct width of skull. Good in neck and shoulders, good depth of body but needs to carry a little more body weight. Well made hindquarters, correct tail set, good double coat, nice sound mover, BV.
MPD 5(0) 1. Lamb/Saltmarsh’s Tycadno Star around Macmoon. Wheaten, I thought he had a lovely balanced shape, nice size for his age. He has a nice head, still needs to finish. Need to carry more body, Hindquarters nicely made, in good double coat but requires improvement in his presentation. Showed quite well. 2. Inett/Harrison’s Carradine Bright Cider Life. Red brindle, outline spoilt for me by his tail carriage. Nice expressive head, nice dark eye and well placed ears. Good balance in body, double coat but not at its best. He’s a youngster so hope his movement settles. 3. Pett’s Doonrae Ursa Major.
PD 2(0) 1. Munday’s Furythor Reluctant Villain. Grey brindle, nice size with a good head and expression. Well made body with balance and nice overall shape. Shopland’s Sanderfield On The Rocks for Cherrycrack. Dark brindle with a really nice head, good stop and well placed ears. Good length of neck, nice body with a strong rear. Fails in front for me but when he settled moved with good width behind. One of those who pulls all over the place!

Richmond Championship Show UK, Saturday 7th September 2024

I was honoured to judge my breed at the Richmond Championship Show and thank all of the exhibitors for their entries. I enjoyed judging a good entry of quality Cairns Terriers, and was especially pleased with my Challenge winners and Best Veteran.
The weather and the ring condition were not ideal, however the cairns performed well and the exhibitors endured! I appreciate all those who braved the weather to attend. My apologies for the delay in my critiques, but world travel and more terrier adventures intervened.

harsh coats I have ever examined, particularly for a red. He is well constructed with a
good reach of neck and well laid shoulders, level back and well sprung ribs. He has
an excellent head and expression. Unfortunately he did not want to behave on the

Cairn Terriers, Bournemouth 2024

Minor Puppy Dog (3)

1. Carradine Bright Cider Life

Six months old, very smart dog, a little longer than tall and with enough length of leg for balance. Expressive head with correct size for a puppy, but with skull yet to develop. Excellent ears. Strong neck. Firm topline. Well set tail. Balanced angulation both ends. Very good top coat, but needs to develop some more underwool. Sound, positive mover.

2. Tycadno Shining Star Around Macmoon

At eight months of age, this dog has good length of leg and a firm topline. Not quite the front angulation nor the body volume of the winner. Excellent expression. Pleasing rise of neck. Well set and carried tail. Very good coat. Pleasing mover.

3. Carradine All Ways A Chance

Puppy Dog (2)

1. Castleline Lucas of Macantsaoir

At nine months old, this dog is fully grown into his proportions and has an attractive outline with pleasing length of leg and a corresponding body length. Masculine head with a pleasing furrow and enough width of skull for his age. Excellent ears. Good rise of neck. Firm topline. Good tailset. Pleasing coat quality and movement.

2. Carradine All Ways A Chance

Strong, masculine seven months old puppy, yet to grow enough length of leg for balance. Attractive head. Strong neck. Very good front angulation. Puppyish in his body shape and needs to raise his front in movement. Very pleasing coat quality.

Junior Dog (3)

1. Carradine My Way Lenny

At eight months old, this dog has very pleasing balance, proportions and outline. Head under development, but with a proper size. Very good ears, excellent expression. Excellent neck into shoulders. Firm topline, very pleasing tailset. Good coat. Moved with enthusiasm and balance.

2. Sanderfield On The Rocks for Cherrycrack

Thirteen months old, very masculine dog, bordering on coarse. Excellent skull. Balanced angulation both ends. In a full body. Very good topline when standing, but tending to lose his balance when pulling on the leash. Very pleasing coat quality.

Post Graduate Dog (2)

Two very different dogs, scoring in different traits.

1. Macantsaoir Celtic Warrior

Tall dog, two years old, he looked his best in movement as his topline is much more pleasing moving than standing. Masculine head, good furrow and pleasing width of skull, well placed ears. Very good neck. Tail could be better set. Very good quality of coat. Smart mover from the side, but could perfect his front movement.

2. Tycadno Magic Man

Masculine dog, shorter on legs. Very pleasing head, but his ears are too wide-set. Good rise of neck. Topline could be smarter, needs more volume to his body. Moved well from the side, but another who could perfect his front movement.

Limit Dog (2)

Two very attractive dogs, if excelling in different qualities.

1. Pendley Seafarer

A dog with lovely outline and proportions. Typical head, large enough, but with a good width of skull. Very good ears. Excellent rise of neck. Moderately angulated in front. Excellent topline and tailset. A bit in between coats, but with more than enough to assess his good coat quality. A sound, positive, no nonsense mover, when concentrating keeping his balance beautifully. In sum an excellent representative of his breed and sex. CC & BOB

2. Carradine Apple Jack

Another very attractive dog, stronger in the bone than the winner. Excellent width of skull, rather wide-set ears. Strong neck of moderate length. Firm topline. Tail could be higher set. Excellent coat quality. Sound and purposeful mover. resCC

Open Dog (4,1)

1. Glenrood Galaxy At Tribannon

A tall, masculine dog, I would not want him any larger than this. Strong skull, good ears. Keen expression. Long neck. Firm topline, well set and carried tail. Coat is in need of a tighter trim. He is a very positive mover from all angles.

2. Ch.Carradine Arfa Pint JW

Obviously a quality dog, he is very good to go over. Typical head with very good ears. Well set neck into a firm topline. Well set and carried tail. For me he does have enough length of leg for optimal balance. A sound, positive mover. Very well presented and handled.

3. Uniquecottage Grey Borage

Veteran Dog (1)

1. Birselaw Come Dancing With Macmoon

Seven year old, masculine dog with enough length of leg. Masculine head with a pleasing skull. Could make better use of his ears. Moderate neck, well set. Well angulated in front. Firm topline, but needs more width over the loin. Well set tail. Well angulated behind. A normal, sound mover. Best Veteran

Minor Puppy Bitch (3,1)

1. Tycadno Winter Star

At eight months old, this bitch is quite mature for her age. Fairly developed head with good width of skull and small, well set ears. Pleasing neck into shoulder. I would not want her to be any longer in body. Very good coat. Sound mover. Best Puppy

2. Lindcoly Times of Trouble

Six months old and very much a baby. She looked really good in profile on the table. Her head has a long way to go to develop width of skull and more strength of muzzle. Very good topline and tailset. Very puppyish in movement at this time.

Puppy Bitch (3,2)

1. Lindcoly Times of Trouble

Junior Bitch (1)

1. Lindcoly Singing Angela

Feminine bitch, at this stage very much a teenager. Her head has quite a lot of maturing to do in width of skull and muzzle. Large ears. Pleasing rise of neck. Rather shallow in body. Quite pleasing tailset. Very good coat quality. Moved with ease and light on her feet.

Post Graduate Bitch (4,1)

1. Dazzle Me At Tribannon

A feminine bitch with very attractive proportions and excellent length of leg. Attractive feminine head. Could make better use of her ears. Attractive neck of good length and well set into a firm topline. Well set tail. Well angulated behind. Pleasing top coat. Moved with style.

2. Birselaw Floran Dancer of Uniquecottage

Feminine bitch with enough length of leg and somewhat lengthy in her back, still kept her topline well at all times. Typical head, pleasing ears. Moderate neck and front angulation. Excellent coat, very well trimmed. Normal sound mover, but could use her neck to more advantage on the move.

3. Lindcoly Here Comes Oh Shi

Limit Bitch (3,1)

1. Lindcoly Picture Perfect

Quite an eye-catching and smart bitch with a pleasing outline and balance. Feminine head, which could be somewhat stronger. Pleasing ears, used to her advantage. Well set neck into topline. Well set and carried tail. Pleasing coat. Moved quite well from all angles. resCC

2. Wandris Please Yourself JW

Feminine bitch with an excellent expression. Rather thin in neck and straight in upper arm. Excellent coat quality, very well trimmed. Used her legs well when moving, but tended to be high behind in her balance on the move.

Open Bitch (5,2)

1. Ch. Glory Daze At Tribannon

A very typical cairn bitch with excellent proportions, well up on legs and with a corresponding body length. Typical, feminine head with a keen expression. Good rise of neck into a firm topline and a very good tailset – in all making a very attractive outline. Moderate, balanced angulation both ends. In a harsh coat of ample amount. She moved cleanly coming and going and kept her balance very well, but I would have preferred some more drive. CC

2. Carradine Picadd Lilly

A really good moving bitch, sound and energetic. For my preference she is too cobby in her body. Attractive, feminine head. Strong neck. Deep and capacious body. Firm topline. Pleasing tail. Very well trimmed. Probably the best mover of them all today.

3. Lindcoly Ocean Dream

Many thanks to the committee for inviting me to judge at their well-run show, and for the warm welcome and hospitality. Many thanks to the exhibitors for giving me a quality entry and for travelling so far. It was both an honour and a pleasure to judge your dogs. Some sadly underperformed and stopped showing when it mattered the most, but I was especially pleased with the dogs to whom I gave top honours. Apologies that I was unable to stay to support you in the groups, but I hear both puppy and BOB put on a good performance.

Judge – Louise Peers

I would like to thank the officers and committee of the show for their kind invitation to judge Cairn Terriers. Thanks also to my efficient stewards.

I was originally invited to judge the 2021 show, but the long wait was worth it – some lovely dogs to go over at a well-run show in the Malvern Hills – and the sun shone.

I have two general comments to make: mouths were excellent: mostly clean, large teeth and good bites. Unfortunately, though, I noticed that some handlers didn’t show their exhibits on a loose lead, which hampered movement.

I thoroughly enjoyed my day and was delighted with the overall quality of Cairns. Sincere thanks to all the exhibitors for entering under me and allowing me to go over their dogs.

Windsor 2024 -Cairn Terriers

I very much enjoyed judging the Cairns at Windsor 2024 and thank you to the exhibitors for an interesting entry. Overall I felt that the quality was better than last time I judged the breed with some interesting decisions to make. There is some variation in size across the breed and also some variation in overall proportions. I felt that more could move a little better behind and movement inevitably came into some of my decisions. Overall though the breed is not in bad shape and the winners were quality dogs with some close decisions being made.

Thank you to my stewards Gail Courtney-Baughan and Janet Carpenter who kept things moving thus ensuring that we were through in good time.

Cairn Terrier – Veteran

Entries: 3 Absentees: 0

1ST Cannwood Misty Dawn at Gethlee (Miss J H Smith) -a decent type to start the day, looks the part, good double coat , pretty head, ok in front, a little weak in rear, typy, looked a little stuffy.

2ND Birselaw Come Dancing with Macmoon OSW JW ShCEx ShCM (Ms J & Mr B Lamb & Saltmarsh)-slightly better proportioned than the winner but not quite the quality head.

Cairn Terrier – Puppy Dog

Entries: 3 Absentees: 0

1ST Tycadno Shining Star (Ms J & Mr B Lamb & Saltmarsh)-this baby had a super topline and overall looks to be a quality baby. He has good bone for his age. He is currently a bit up on the leg and hopefully with maturity he will drop slightly and furnish up. Very promising.

2ND Castleline Lucas of Macantsaoir (Mr & Mrs I Mcintyre)-good headed baby who was in good coat for his age, moved well up and back, carried his tail a fraction high.

Cairn Terrier – Junior Dog

Entries: 2 Absentees: 0

1ST Carradine My Way Lenny (Miss D & Miss R A & Mrs R Inett & Harrison & Bateman)-promising youngster who is developing along good lines, looked lovely on the table as he is a lovely type and good proportions, moved well up and back and good in profile as well. Should have a bright future.

2ND 4437 – Sanderfield On The Rocks for Cherrycrack (Imp Fin) (Mrs M E J Shopland)-I liked the body and bone of this youngster and he had a typical head with a decent eye, not quite as good up and back as the winner but he too shows promise.

Cairn Terrier – Post Graduate Dog

Entries: 3 Absentees: 0

1ST Barry Burton The Brave (Miss J Udova) -lovely headed boy and good body proportions. Decent coat, well presented but still had a natural appearance, good in front, a little close behind.

2ND Macantsaoir Celtic Warrior (Mr & Mrs I Mcintyre)-showy boy when he settled, another good coated one, presented a typical outline when standing and moved ok. Not quite as flashy as the winner.

Cairn Terrier – Limit Dog

Entries: 4 Absentees: 1

1ST Pendley Seafarer (Mrs J M Yates-Johnson)-took my eye as soon as he came in, looked lovely in stance and handled really well on the table with everything in the right place, decent neck and shoulders which gave him a look of quality, looked super on the move too. Res CC and should usually be there or thereabouts.

2ND Cloverbrook Game Set Nmatch (Mrs J Ballinger)-typy boy who looked good standing and was lovely to go over, decent head, not quite the movement of the winner.

Cairn Terrier – Open Dog

Entries: 6 Absentees: 1

1ST Ch Carradine Arfa Pint JW (Miss L Hiam) -this boy had my attention as soon as he came in as he is on his toes and is clearly a showman. Good size, masculine but not big or leggy, lovely head, moved well in all directions and with animation. Great outline and proportions with lovely tail carriage. Won a competitive class and kept it up all day to take the CC and then BOB. When I looked back I see that he was my best puppy last time I judged the breed and delighted to see how he has finished. Super.

2ND Carradine Apple Jack (Miss D H & Mrs R A Inett & Harrison)-this was the other one in the class who had my attention straightaway. Very similar in type to the winner and I see that they were both bred in the same kennel. Lovely on the table, super coat and well presented, not quite the outline of the winner on the move which was the decider.

Cairn Terrier – Special Beginners

Entries: 1 Absentees: 0

1ST Barry Burton The Brave (Miss J Udova)-the winner of post graduate dog

Cairn Terrier – Puppy Bitch

Entries: 4 Absentees: 0

1ST Tycadno Winter Star (Mr G Thomas) -what a pretty puppy, just 6 months and everything in the right place, lovely size for her age, feminine, super proportions and a super outline, lovely tail and carriage, pretty head. Beat her litter brother for best puppy as she is a little more mature and in lovely puppy bloom. One to watch.

2ND Furythor Born to Sparkle (Mrs P Clarke)-equally promising and she does sparkle. Lovely size, lovely outline and movement was good, not quite as showy as the winner but she too should have a bright future.

Cairn Terrier – Post Graduate Bitch

Entries: 6 Absentees: 1

1ST Birselaw Floral Dancer of Uniquecottage (Miss A R Parker-Tucker)-this one screams Cairn at you as she really is very typical, pretty head, lovely proportions, good in front, could be a little stronger behind.

2ND 4446 – Dazzle Me at Tribannon (Mrs A Waugh)-this was a very showy girl and she moved well, good tail and carriage, just not quite the classic proportions of the winner

Cairn Terrier – Limit Bitch

Tough decision between the first two in this class.

Entries: 4 Absentees: 0

1ST Glenrood Midnight Spell (Mrs S E Dolan)-presented a good outline decent front movement and nicely coated, a little narrow in skull.

2ND 4444 – Castleline Maitree (Mr S Thompson)-this one was better headed and also had a good front. Not quite as firm in topline as the winner.

Cairn Terrier – Open Bitch

Entries: 4 Absentees: 0

1ST Ch Pendley Sea Breeze (Mrs J M Yates-Johnson) -pretty girl who has such a lovely outline both standing and moving, feminine, lovely temperament, handled well on the table, decent coat and well presented, rear could be a little stronger which was the decider for BOB but her obvious quality earned her a well deserved CC.

2ND Ch Cloverbrook Unbreakable at Woodthorpe (Mrs S Kinton)-interesting contest between these two champion girls, this one is a bigger mould and not quite the head of the winner but she is a born showgirl, in lovely condition and moved well. A well deserved Res CC.

Judge: Tim Ball

My thanks to the Committee for offering me the appointment, thanks to my Stewards for their organisation and making judging a pleasure, and finally thanks to the exhibitors for the very nice entry of 73 exhibits and 75 entries. The breed is in the doldrums numerically, but my CC winners were excellent type and sound, my principle winners were good examples of the breed. There were some lovely quality bitches and I would have been happy to award more CC’s to them, some decisions were close . A couple of bitches were far bigger than I like. The wind was bitterly cold

My thanks to the committee for the invitation and to the exhibitors for their lovely entry. I appreciated all those who brought their Cairns for me to assess. My grateful thanks to Jane Charleton who stepped in to steward for me and did a fantastic job. I hope the unsporting actions of a few didn’t spoil it for you. Overall temperaments were excellent and bites good. Grooming varies and I was surprised at how short on the leg and long some were. Upright shoulders, loose elbows and cow hocks were also an issue.

My Best in Show was an upstanding male with a fabulous masculine head with keen expression and the best shoulders of the day. He is, granted, taller than some, however he is balanced, short coupled and his length of leg to body ratios were spot on for me. I was amazed he hasn’t his title. I’m sure he won’t be long gaining his 3rd CC.

Baby Puppy D/B (5)

1st Shannon & Storr’s Brenndarcy Life on Mars. 5month cream male with a lot to like about him. His head and ears were good. I liked his length of leg to body proportions and he was in a good jacket for his age. Promising youngster.

2nd Thomas’ Tycadno Winter Star – 5½ month wheaten brindle female. Another promising baby. Pretty feminine typey head. Liked her size and balance for her age and presented well.

3rd Inett & Harrison’s Carradine Bright Cider Life.

vD/B (2)

1 Smith’s Cannwood Misty Dawn at Gethlee 8year old cream female. Very typey feminine head with good ears. Liked her front and back angulation. She was presented in excellent jacket and moved well.

  1. Dolan’s Ch Glenrood Spell Dance JW Nearly 8-year old silver brindle female. Smaller than 1st, well balanced and moved well, preferred movement and head of 1st.

Mpd (2)

1 McIntyre’s Castleline Lucas of Macantsoir 7month wheaten male, with masculine typey head. Balanced front and rear, moved well. Coat good.

2 Munday’s Furythor Reluctant Villain 6month dark brindle male. Liked his typey head and good coat. Preferred movement of 1st.

Pd (1)

1 Inett, Harrison & Bateman’s Carradine My Way Lenny this 11month wheaten brindle boy, stood alone, but didn’t detract from his quality. Typey head. Liked his front and rear. Presented beautifully. Balanced, promising young boy who I considered for RBD. His day will come. Best Puppy.

2 Thomas & Jones’ Tycadno New Tricks 2-year-old cream male with a lovely typey head. Preferred make and shape of 1st.

LD (4,1) 1 Thomas’ Tycadno Magic Man 2year old Wheaten male, typey head, reasonably well put together. Coat good.

2 Ballinger’s Cloverbrook Game Set Nmatch. 23month silver brindle male. Lovely masculine head. Preferred angulation and shape on 1st.

3rd Munday’s Lentrica Mystic Warrior

OD (7, 2)

1 Waugh’s Glenrood Galaxy at Tribannon 3-year-old grey brindle male. This dog was my stand away winner today. He, for me fits what I was looking for. Lovely masculine, typical Cairn head, on well set neck. Lovely layback of shoulder into straight front with close fitting elbows. Short coupled, with the requisite level back and strong loin. Equally good in the rear. I loved his length of leg to depth of body proportions. On the move this dog is able to demonstrate the free-flowing movement I was looking for due to his correct construction. He cannot move wrong as he is made so right. Thank you for bringing him. I understand he is on 2CC’s I hope his third isn’t too far away.

2nd Hiam’s Ch Carradine Arfa Pint JW. 2 ½ year old male I have judged previously. Masculine typey head. Balanced male who has since gained his crown. Presented in excellent order and handled beautifully, unfortunate to meet 1st.

3rd Inett & Harrison’s Carradine Apple Jack MPB (4,2) 1 Thomas’ Castleline Seren at Tycadno 6½ month Cream female. Pretty feminine head. Liked her shape, shown in excellent order and moved well. BPB

BATH 2024 CAIRN TERRIERS

My thanks to the committee for inviting me to judge at their show and to the exhibitors for their entries, it was most appreciated. This is a great venue these days, you could not want for better rings, which were a good size with ultra short grass. The weather forecast for the day had not been very promising, but we were lucky to just have one horrendous downpour with thunder and lightning, which the dogs coped with remarkably well. It was a shame the limit bitch class took the brunt of the change in conditions. I attempted to have at least one go round the full space of the ring but sadly the weather just became too much. I know our dogs are meant to be hardy and in the old days before covered tents we would all have been stood out in it, but it was just not fair on dogs or their handlers. My regret is that class did not get same opportunity as everyone else to show of their paces as the covered area was very restricted to assess movement. Overall, I found good mouths with just a couple being on the edge, a couple of kinks in tails and in a few classes I had to balance this against the dogs’ other qualities. Overall temperaments were what we would expect from Cairns, friendly and out-going. I found quite a few that were very heavy in front. I think Cairns should be lithe, muscular and agile, not something that goes with heavy fronts. I think the correct balance is the hardest thing to achieve in Cairns, too much on the leg and you lose all angles, get the right angles and sometimes you lose leg length.

MPD (2).

1 McIntyre’s Castleline Lucas Of Macantsoir. Quality wheaten puppy that really catches the eye. Attractive head with good stop and small well-placed ears. Strong topline leading to excellent tail set, strong quarters and well let down hocks. Created a lovely outline on the move, holding his topline at all times. Moved well going away but still needs to tighten in front movement. BP.

2 Munday’s Furythor Reluctant Villain. Grey Brindle, heavier, larger type than the winner and will take longer to come together. Strong head with good stop. Good harsh coat. Moved very freely just needs to tighten in front and topline. When his front tightens up, I think it will give him a bit more wither height and improve his topline.

PD (1).

1 Inett, Harrison & Bateman’s Carradine My Way Lenny. Wheaten brindle puppy who is very eye catching. Attractive head with good stop and well-placed ears. Excellent coat coming through which was beautifully presented. On the move really covered the ground holding a good topline. Just needs to use his tail more on the stand to finish the picture.

PGD (4)

1 Thomas & Jone’s Tycadno New Tricks. Wheaten dog with beautiful head, good stop and well-placed ears. Strong bone, a bit heavy in front and would just like a bit more wither height to balance him out. Straight topline leading to excellent tail set. He maintained this shape on the move covering the ground easily when viewed in profile. A bit wide in rear movement when going away.

2 Mcintyre’s Macantsaoir Celtic Warrior. A grey brindle dog totally different type being much higher on the leg and bigger overall. Good head with well-placed ears just not the expression of the winner. Moved freely with good stride on the move, just a bit close coming and going.

3 Udova’s Barry Burton The Brave.

LD (5).

1 Inett & Harrison’s Carradine Apple Jack. This red dog was lovely to go over on the table. Attractive head with good stop and small well-placed ears. Good front construction, strong topline and good quarters. In good coat. Very free mover covering ground well just needs to use his tail on the move more to create the outline I was looking for.

2 Ballinger’s Cloverbrook Game Set’N Match. Grey brindle dog, bit bigger overall than the winner, shown in full coat. Attractive head with lovely expression. Straight topline and good tail set. Another free mover that went with a purpose. On the move just didn’t hold his topline as well as he did on the stand.

3 Waugh’s Glenrood Galaxy At Tribannon.

OD (5). 1 Hogarty’s Ch/Ir Ch Cadagio Another Day In Paradise. Red dog of lovely size that was so good to go over on the table. Attractive, strong head with good stop and well-placed ears giving a lovely expression. Harsh coat just coming back in. Good shoulders, slightly short in upper arm, flowing to strong topline and excellent tail set. It is on the move he really comes into his own where he covers the ground so easily always maintaining that lovely outline. Very true coming and going. Just lost out to the lovely bitch as she had just tad more front extension but that’s being picky. DCC

2 Hiam’s Ch Carradine Arfa Pint. A slightly smaller grey brindle dog who again was lovely to go over on the table. Attractive head, strong topline and good well-muscled hind quarters. Presented beautifully in a really good coat of great texture. Another really good mover who went round the ring effortlessly holding a wonderful outline. For me I would just like him a fraction up on the leg but he was just too sound to ignore. RES CC.

3 Parker-Tucker’s Uniquecottage Grey Borage.

Special Beginners (1)

1 Dawidowska’s You’re So Bossy Seglavi. Raw leggy puppy. Good head with good stop and keen expression. Strong topline and good tail set. Straight front and strong quarters. Held this outline on the move. Shown with hardly any furnishings, a good harsh red coat starting to come in. She has the scope to mature into a very smart bitch.

VB (2)

1 Dolan’s Ch Glenrood Spell Dance. Dark brindle bitch beautifully balanced with attractive head, good stop and good expression. Excellent front construction, straight front, good topline and tail set. Move very truly coming and going and held her shape in profile. Best Veteran.

2 Smith’s Cannwood Misty Dawn At Gethlee Larger wheaten bitch with beautiful head, excellent stop, small well carried ears. Carrying just a bit more weight than the winner. Moved very soundly covering the ground well, just not holding the same outline as the winner.

MPB (2) 1 Thomas’s Castleline Seren At Tycadno. Litter sister to the minor puppy dog winner and that same look of quality. Attractive head, good stop with well-placed ears. Good topline and tail set, excellent wheaten coat. Looked lovely in profile on the move but needs to tighten in front movement and a bit close behind.

2 Saich’s Lindcoly Just a Dram. In comparison to the winner, very raw and not such an accomplished show girl. Good to go over on the table, in full harsh coat. Well let down hocks which she used on the moved. Now needs to come all together and strengthen in topline.

PB (3)

1 Saich’s Lindcoly Singing Angela Very showy red brindle in full coat. Attractive head, good topline and tail set. Moved very freely always holding her outline.

2 You’re So Bossy Seglavi.

3 Dennis & Waites Svendalens Skye Lantern.

JB (2) 1 Hogarty’s Cadagio Let’s Get It Started. Well up to size red bitch. Beautiful head, good stop, well placed ears. Excellent front construction, strong topline and good tail set and strong quarters. Held this wonderful outline on the move, really covering the ground. If only the whole package was that bit smaller, she would have pushed for top honours.

2 Shaw’s Ch Tycadno Star Attraction At Honeyhall. Another beautiful wheaten brindle bitch, far more the size I prefer. Really attractive head, deep stop, small ears with lovely expression. Good topline and tail set. One of the best movers coming and going all day. Unfortunately, she gave her handler such a hard time going round, intent on smelling the grass just didn’t give me that outline I was looking for.

PGB (9).

1 Saich’s Lindcoly Picture Perfect. Grey brindle bitch in full harsh coat. Attractive head, well placed ears. Good topline and tail set. Moved really well covering the ground and holding her outline at all times.

2 Parker-Tucker’s Birselaw Floral Dancer Of Uniquecottage. I liked the balance of this wheaten bitch. Attractive head with good expression. Good topline and tail set. Moved well in profile holding her outline, just a little bit restricted in front movement. Could project herself a bit more.

3 Bubb’s Wandris Please Yourself JW.

LB (6) What a shame for this class. I really feel they didn’t get the opportunity to show their virtues because of the dreadful downpour. The inside ring was just too small to really assess movement and allow them to settle.

1 Thompson’s Castleline Maitree. This wheaten bitch coped with the conditions best of all. Attractive head with good stop and small ears. Straight topline, good tail set and strong quarters. Moved very freely and was good coming and going. Would just like a tad more length of leg and was carrying a few extra pounds. I see she is the mother of the two promising minor puppies.

2 Parker-Tucker’s Sandrio Zinnia Of Uniquecottage. Really liked the balance of this grey brindle bitch. Good head, small ears. Good front construction, straight topline and good tail set and strong quarters. Quite short of coat but what there was good quality. Saw flashes of good movement and lovely outline just didn’t make the most of herself. Would have been lovely to see her outside in better conditions.

3 Dolan’s Glenrood Midnight Spell.

OB (3)

1 Waugh’s Ch Glory Daze At Tribannon. Just the balance I was looking for in this wheaten brindle bitch. Beautiful head, good stop, well placed ears with lovely expression. Neck flows to good shoulders, straight front, strong topline and good tail set and strong quarters. She was shown in a full harsh coat. It’s on the move she really comes into her own, really covering the ground with good extension holding a wonderful outline. BCC and BOB.

2 Firth’s Ch Cairngold Chiquitita. Another beautifully balanced bitch. Attractive head, good stop and small well-placed ears. Shown in harsh red full coat. Good front construction, straight front and strong quarters. Good topline and tail set. She also held a great outline on the move and was so true coming and going. Very close up between these two bitches the winner just had a bit more freedom and vitality on the move. RES BCC

I would like to thank the Committee and the SKC and especially Gillian Jones Secretary for all the information to help run the two shows. I wish to thank the three lady stewards who had the arduous task of trying to keep the judging going in their selected rings. I like to thank the exhibitors for their entries and for staying on for the 2nd Show’s judging. It was lovely to have the opportunity to go over our breed and to meet every ones happy go lucky breed. JUDGE:  Peter Owen

I would like to thank the SCTC for the honour of judging their open show, the sun shone on a wonderful venue for the first outdoor show of the year, unfortunately what looked like a good entry on paper was marred by a large number of absentees, those exhibitors and dogs who were there all had wonderful temperaments, I was made to feel very welcome and all my decisions were taken with good grace, I would like to thank my two excellent ring stewards Madames Davey and Byrne.

MPD (1)

1 McIntyre’s Castleline Lucas of Macantsoir. 6 month old wheaten, outgoing and happy boy who showed so well for such a youngster, good head with deep stop, dark eye and excellent pigment, correct bite, excellent coat texture, he has strong hindquarters enabling driving rear movement, front still needs to develop, BPD and BPIS.

PGD (3,1)

1 Morley’s Kanawha Spy Man. 3 year old with a strong masculine head, lovely expression, good stop and correct dentition, double coat of correct texture, nice size and bone, he moved well with good rear movement once he settled.

2 McIntyre’s Macantsaoir Celtic Warrior. 18 month old dog with a lovely head, good mouth, well set ears, correct eyes, he has an excellent coat of correct texture, I preferred the hind movement of the winner.

MLD (3) 1 Ballinger’s Cloverbrook Game Set N Match. Nearly 2 year old dark brindle, strong dog with good bone and well angulated front and rear, good brisket and depth of chest, lovely head with good teeth, well set ears, nice eye and expression, moved with drive from behind, full double coat, excellently presented and shown, he is a little long through the loin but he has so many good qualities, BD and BIS.

2 Lucas/Tobutt’s Seveek Country Lad. 2 year old brindle who was unlucky to be up against the winner, he challenged hard for RBD, I have judged him before and he continues to be a very well made dog with good front and hind angulation, level top-line, well set tail, good coat and nice head, he showed well today and never stopped wagging his tail, well presented and handled. 3 Keeves’ Seveek Guilded Dream.

OD (2,1) 1 Waught’s Glenrood Galaxy at Tribannon. 3 year old dark brindle, he is very strong and strong willed dog who is a real handful for his handler, I’ve seen him cooperate more than he did today, when he does he’s eye-catching, good bone throughout, masculine head, good bite with large teeth, level top-line with good tail set, excellent coat, it was close for RBD but his ring presence won the day, RBD.

SpVD/B (7-9 YEARS) (1)

1 Dolan’s Ch. Glenrood Spell Dance JW. 8 year old, an excellent example of a Cairn Terrier, full of breed type, lovely bone, balance, size, coat and movement topped off with a lovely head, she shows the youngsters how to show, no surprise to see she was a Ch.

SpVD/B (+10 YEARS AND OVER) (1)

1 Dolan’s Ch. Glenrood Scheherazade. 11 years young bitch, wonderful quality, lovely balance, glorious head, wicked expression and excellent coat, moved like a train, loved her! A credit to her owners and the breed and definitely the one the judge would like to take home, unfortunately in the challenge she didn’t get on with her substitute handler and downed tools completely, unlucky to be only BVIS.

PGB (4,1)

1 Keeves’ Seveek Peaches and Cream. 2 year old red, balanced bitch with enough bone, pretty feminine head, well angulated front with good shoulders, good reach of neck and level top-line, strong hindquarters with good bend of stifle, tail well set and carried, moved best in the class, her coat is of excellent texture but she could do with a trip to the beauty parlour!

2 Ballinger’s Cloverbrook Forget Me Knot. 23 month old brindle bitch shown in full coat, very attractive feminine head with lovely expression, good mouth, eyes, stop and ear placement, nice for size and bone, not as positive on the move as the winner today. 3 Metcalf-Sault’s Cannwood Can’t Get Enough.

MLB (4,2)

1 Waugh’s Dazzle Me at Tribannon. 2 year old attractive wheaten bitch who is well balanced of correct size, she has a good head with good mouth and large teeth, lovely eye, nice flow of neck into level top-line, correct coat texture, well presented and handled, she is a lovely mover who really flowed around the ring, a very close decision for BB but had to settle for RBB today.

2 Metcalf-Sault’s Cannwood Quiet Reflections. 4 year old grey brindle, well made with good bone, level top-line, nice head with good mouth and dark eye, harsh double coat, happy show girl, long nails spoilt her feet.

OB (6,4)

1 Dolan’s Glenrood Midnight Spell. 2 year old very dark bitch, she has a lighter frame but still with enough bone, well put together with correct shoulders and hindquarters, feminine pretty head with melting expression, correct mouth, good stop and dark eye, excellent double coat of correct texture, she is a steady but correct mover, shown and presented well, BB and RBIS.

2 Metcalf-Sault’s Cannwood Quiet Reflections. 2nd in MLB.

SpBB 1)

1 Metcalf-Sault’s Cannwood Cant Get Enough. Pretty wheaten bitch, nice for size, bone and balance, nice head, level top-line with well set and carried tail, she moved much better in this class (not pulling sideways), well presented with excellent coat.

WEST OF ENGLAND LADIES KENNEL SOCIETY

FRIDAY 26TH APRIL 2024.

CAIRN TERRIERS.

JUDGE: MRS LYNDA, F, HUGHES. (GYNCAIRN CAIRN TERRIERS)

I would like to thank the Society for the invitation of being a specialist Judge in my breed the Cairn Terrier. Although the numbers in all breeds are declining to continue inviting a specialist judge whenever possible hopefully continues to draw the entries, I hope?

Thank you to WELKS for the appointment to judge our wonderful Breed and a big thank you to my exhibitors for allowing me the pleasure of going over your lovely dogs.

I had seen some exhibits from the ringside on previous occasions, but only whilst officiating as secretary, so had not the time to study them. It was lovely to be able to have the time to finally go over them in detail.

Are our “Babies” waiting in the wings? I do hope so, sad to see the Puppy class’s so empty…

Coats at this time of year are always a challenge, however, I do have a preference for a good coat, although I appreciate that with some “colours” it is easier than others.

We have lovely temperaments on the whole and I feel that this is important when considering using stud dogs.

Where have our fore chests gone! There were a few on the day with a good fore chest, but only a few…Again, perhaps another attribute to consider when planning a breeding programme.

I found many pretty bitches and masculine dogs, which was an improvement from the last time that I judged.

Now for my favourite subject “shoulders”! I am of the old school and there is nothing more exciting for me than a good length of neck running into clean well laid-back shoulders. Unfortunately, I found very few of these today which made me a little sad.

On a positive note, I was very happy with my overall winners.

CLASS: MINOR PUPPY DOG: NO ENTRIES

CLASS: PUPPY DOG: (2E-1A) 1st CARRADINE MY WAY LENNY (MISS, D & MRS R & MRS R, INETT, HARRISON, BATEMAN) Although this 10month old puppy stood alone in this class he is so smart and typical of this kennel. Beautiful coat, lovely expression, correct bite, good stop with neat ears which he used well completing the picture of a male puppy. Well bodied, he did not make it easy for his handler this morning but it was lovely to follow that he went on to achieve more awards later in the day.

CLASS: JUNIOR DOG: NO ENTRIES

CLASS: YEARLING DOG: NO ENTRIES

CLASS: POST GRADUATE DOG (1E) 1st TYCADNO MAGIC MAN (MR G THOMAS) Well presented and in full coat wheaten boy. Strong head, enough neck, well sprung ribs, a little on the “light side” but a very good reason for that!! topline was good and he was not over angulated, good front, he shows his drive when moving around the ring with no stops!

CLASS: LIMIT DOG: (3E) 1st CLOVERBROOK GAME SET NMATCH (MRS L BALLINGER) Not a dog I have ever seen before but to me he was all male and took my eye. Lovely to go over and “oh” what a neck and shoulders. Masculine head, good stop, good front, responded well to the handler she gets the best out of him, his balance and drive on the move confirmed for me to award him the DOG C.C.

2ND PENDLEY SEAFARER (MRS J YATES-JOHNSON) Red brindle dog, short on coat today but nothing to hide. Another with a masculine head, strong jaw with correct bite. I would prefer a little more layback of shoulders, he has well sprung ribs and I liked his balance, good rear muscle tone you can tell he is well exercised. Smart showman.

3rd SEVEEK COUNTRY LAD (MISS R & MR I LUCAS&TOBUTT)

CLASS: OPEN DOG: (6E-2A) 1ST BRENNDARCY IT’S MAGIC(AI) (MISS B & MR D & MRS M, SHANNON, STORR & MIDDLEHURST) A well balanced dog, in good coat, strong head and full complement of teeth. Good width between the ears, length of neck just right, level topline well-coated ribs, no over angulation and good drive on the move, not quite as true in front as the CC winner but he pushed hard. RES DOG C.C.

2ND UNIQUECOTTAGE GREY BORAGE (MISS A, R, PARKER-TUCKER) Very handsome Cream dog in a superb full coat which you rarely see in the ring these days. Strong masculine head, good stop, a fore chest! Topline was good with correct tail set I liked both these two boys but just preferred 1st today.

3RD CARRADINE APPLE JACK (MISS D.H & MRS R.A INETT & HARRISON)

CLASS: VETERAN BITCH: 1ST CANNWOOD MISTY DAWN AT GETHLEE (MISS J.H. SMITH) First of all a credit to her owner, this bitch for her age of just over 8yrs old is in top condition, A very pretty head with lovely neat ears, not the shoulders that I was looking for, well covered but good muscle tone on hind quarters, again another dog that you can tell gets exercise, she kept her topline when going around the ring effortless. BEST VETERAN

CLASS: MINOR PUPPY BITCH: NO ENTRIES.

CLASS: PUPPY BITCH: NO ENTRIES.

CLASS: JUNIOR BITCH: (2E-1A) 1ST TYCADNO STAR ATTRACTION AT HONEYHALL (MR I. SHAW) Not quite 13month’s old but what a stunning looking young lady! Very feminine head with a good stop and correct eye colour, well trained on the table and a pleasure to go over, angulation is not exaggerated. A balance and size that I like but wow when she matures!! Lovely to watch in the challenge going around the ring none stop, she kept her shape and a pleasure to watch the rapport between her and her handler.

CLASS: YEARLING BITCH: (3E-0A) 1ST BIRSLAW FLORAL DANCER OF UNIQUECOTTAGE (MISS A.R. PARKER-TUCKER) Very feminine cream bitch, one of the best heads today for type. Good depth of chest, movement not at is best today but she does not make it easy for her handler! in full coat and well presented.

2ND BRENNDARCY WITCHES PROMISE (MISS B & MR D SHANNON & STORR) Very full of herself Red Brindle, well balanced head with correct width between neat ears, I would have liked better shoulders but her topline was good and she had a good bend of stifle with correct tail set. She took a while to settle on the move and does not always show herself off to her full advantage.

3RD SVENDALENS DANCING QUEEN (MRS E R PARKIN)

CLASS: POST GRADUATE BITCH: (4E-1A) 1ST DAZZLE ME AT TRIBANNON (MRS A WAUGH) Attractive cream in full coat pleasing head, topline was good on the move, enough bone, correct angulation a little shy on the table but was much happier on the move and then she showed off her profile.

2ND CLOVERBROOK SHINING STAR OVER GETHLEE (MISS J SMITH) Grey brindle, up to size, good head and stop, clean shoulders, another with a good topline on the move. I preferred the overall balance of 1ST but still a lovely girl to go over.

3RD CANNWOOD QUIET REFLECTIONS (MRS J A METCALF-SAULT)

CLASS: LIMIT BITCH: (4E-0A) 1ST PENDLEY SEA BREEZE (MRS J M YATES-JOHNSON) Well where do I start? The most stunning bitch I have had the pleasure to go over for a long time. Beautiful expression and everything that I like about a bitch’s head, good front with nice tight pads, a topline that I would describe as “you could balance a plate on “I know that she had not got as much coat as I would normally like but there was nothing to hide. Good bend of stifle and well muscled in hind quarters, you can tell that this relates to exercise. Super show girl flowed effortlessly around the ring and never distracted from her handler. Pleased to award her BITCH C.C AND B.O.B.

2ND CASTLELINE MAITREE (MR S THOMPSON) Another pretty bitch but today lacked sparkle. Good stop, eye colouring and very good mouth. On the table her neck and shoulders were better than some others today but I still would have liked them cleaner for this mature bitch. Topline was good on the move, coming towards me was good. On the whole a well-balanced bitch.

3RD GLENROOD MAGIC SPELL (MRS S E DOLAN)

CLASS: OPEN BITCH: (5E-1A) 1ST Ch GLORY DAZE AT TRIBANNON (MRS A WAUGH) A lovely bitch to go over on the table, up to size but balanced, strong feminine head, good reach of neck and lovely clean shoulders running into level topline, no over angulation moved with drive. A worthy champion and you can understand why. RES BITCH C.C.

2ND Ch CAIRNGOLD CHIQUITITA (MR A, MRS L & MISS A M FIRTH) A striking red bitch and so well presented. Lovely head no mistaking her being a bitch, lovely expression and with what I call “gentle eyes” good topline and tail set which completed a balance to the standard. Good bend of stifle positive front. Another worthy champion but today just preferred the shoulders on 1st.

THE CAIRN TERRIER CLUB – OPEN SHOW.                 31/3/2024

Judging at a breed club show is always an honour and privilege to experience, especially when the atmosphere is welcoming and decisions are taken in a sporting manner. Thank you to The Officers & Committee for the invite, and great hospitality and also to the exhibitors who brought their dogs today. My two stewards did sterling work in running things smoothly.

2     Saich’s Lindcoly Outta Sight , prefer the size of this dog but lost out on erratic movement today, very boisterous & full of himself, in good double coat well presented, good size head & pleasing in neck & shoulder, correctly set tail & carried well,

3     3 Lamb’s Birselaw Come Dancing With Macmoon OSW JW SHCEX SHCM

Open D (6-2 abs) : 1, B.D. & B.I.S. Clarke’s Further Mr Bojangles By Lentrica an easy winner for me today & delighted to find out later he had gained his title, worthy winner well done. Most lovely head shape with correct strong jaw, well defined stop, excellent eye & ear placement, lovely expression, in hard muscular condition & coat correct & presented to perfection, correct rib & excellent top line throughout, correctly sized feet fore & aft, sound free mover ;

2 Shannon & Storr’s  Bendarcy It’s Magic, has a good head & neck, prefer front of 1, has good body condition and is of a pleasing size for a male, strong quarters with well set hocks, good tail carriage, in profile preferred top line of 1.

3 Waugh’s Glenrood Galaxy At Tribannon

Veteran D/B (4-1abs) :

1 & B.V. Marchant’s Ch Winetta Quest For Fame  on looking in my catalogue after judging I was not surprised to see this male has his title, presents a pleasing outline on stack and moves soundly fore & aft, correct tail length & set, double coat of correct texture & was well presented, well set hocks;

2 Lamb’s Birselaw Dark Charmer For Macmoon SH CM VW, a dog I have done well previously and still has excellent movement, full of life and showed himself well, has a good head shape with correct eye & ear placement, sadly is now beginning to lack body condition and also coat condition ;

3     Smith’s Canwood Misty Dawn At Gethlee

Sp. Owners D/B (1) :

1 Lamb’s Birselaw Dusty Miller, young male with strength of jaw, correct eye placement on a reasonable head, tail well set & of good length, correct sized feet fore & add, moved steady when got into his stride, coat had been clipped so texture was lost, hopefully in time this can be improved.

Beginners D/B (3) : 1 B Dusty M ; 2 C Summer S ; 3 Munro’s Birselaw A Beautiful Dream

1  Saich’s Lincoln Singing Angela very raw but is ultra feminine and thoroughly enjoying herself, liked her a lot and particularly good in her body shape & condition, very profuse double coat, correct feet & well set tail carried correctly, needs to develop in head but should have a pleasing future; 2 Dennis & Waite’s Sveddalens Skye Lantern longer cast body than 1, profuse double coat, quite mature in her body development, excellent strength of jaw & good dentition, steady mover striding with confidence.

Novice B (4) :  A good quality class

1 Saich’s Lindcoly Just A Dream just 6 months of age and another from this kennel who was so happy & full of confidence, shows great promise and her enthusiasm will be beneficial, feminine head but has strength in her jaw, correct skull with good ear placement, liked her shoulder set, forone so young moved very well to win this class & B.P.;

3 Gardiner’s Princess Nancy

Grad B (4) : ,

Shannon & Storr’s Brenndarcy Witches Promise very nice bitch who scored highly in her movement over her competition today, pleasing head with well set eye & erect ears well placed, in good muscle tone & carrying just enough weight, has depth to her chest & her ribbing is well sprung, firm in top line, double coat of good texture, well set hocks she uses to drive on the move pushing her forward with free flowing action;

2 Dennis & Waite’s Svendalens Snow Drop, moved true but not the forward action of 1, sound rear action with well placed hocks, good in top line, had excellent texture in her top coat which is just coming through & profuse undercoat, carrying a little excess weight today ;

3 Waugh’s Dazzle Me At Tribannon

Limit B (2) :

1 Monday’s Furthor Marvel At Me not flashy in her showmanship but a very pleasing bitch who on first impressions her top line was not good in profile, I found this was not so when examining her and it was her coat colour & pattern, handy size with well proportioned head, correct in eye & ear, well set front & in excellent body condition & was well muscled, correct double coat of correct texture, moved with a free & easy stride but in challenge had lost her enthusiasm, good feet & tail ;

The Cairn Terrier Club Single Breed Championship Show held Sunday 31st March 2024

Firstly I would like to thank the committee of this club for inviting me to judge Cairns at one of my favourite venues Also thank you to all the exhibitors who brought their dogs for me to judge, I had a most enjoyable day & despite the reduction in entries in recent years, I had some lovely quality dogs to go over. I didn’t find any suspect mouths, in fact teeth were one of the areas I feel have improved, I would have preferred a better stop in some exhibits and some would benefit from not carrying as much weight, but I was highly delighted with my main winners.

Veteran D/B – 3 entries.

1st Marchant’s Ch Winetta Quest for Fame BVIS

Dark brindle boy, excellent head, with neat correctly placed ears, good stop, in good body condition and correct quality double coat. Moving well once he got into his stride, a worthy Champion who I can’t believe is a Veteran. Not using his tail today at times.

2nd Smith’s Cannwood Misty Dawn at Gethlee BVB

Wheaten girl, with nice feminine head, good stop and neat well set ears. Excellent quality double coat, moves so well, good topline and tail set, very attentive to her owner.

3rd Lamb & Saltmarsh’s Birselaw Dark Charmer for Macmoon Sh Cm VW

Minor Puppy Dog – 1 entry, 1 abs

Puppy Dog – 1 entry

1st Roberton’s Cornton Summer Special BPD

Light red boy, nicely balanced youngster, large teeth, neat ears, good length of neck flowing into shoulders, excellent double coat, good tight feet. not keeping his topline at times, and his movement needs to tighten up all round, but he has plenty of time to mature. Very promising young dog puppy.

Junior Dog – NO ENTRIES

Yearling Dog – 1 entry, 1 absent

Post Graduate Dog – 2 entries

1st Young’s Furythor Orion

Red brindle boy with excellent masculine head, dark mask, good stop, large teeth. Well sprung ribs, Good quality double coat of correct texture, would like a bit more harsh hair on legs. Good topline and tailset which he held on the move, moved with plenty of drive and responds well to his handler.

2nd Saich’s Lindcoly Outta Sight

Dark brindle, nicely balanced, large teeth, smaller mould than winner, lots to like about this boy but just lacked confidence at times. What coat he had was of correct texture but not in full coat. He wasn’t using his tail which spoilt his outline, has neat feet and harsh leg hair.

Limit Dog – 2 entries

1st Clarke’s Furythor Mr Bojangles by Lentrica DCC, RBIS & BOS

Grey Brindle, very masculine, large teeth, good stop and typical dark mask, using his ears well. Good forechest, well sprung ribs and supple loin. Correct texture double coat, in great body condition, well muscled quarters, topline and tailset held on the move. Showed so well for his owner, and couldn’t deny him the DCC which I later learned was his third. A worthy champion.

2nd Munday’s Lentrica Mystic Warrier

Dark grey brindle, masculine dog, large teeth, good ear placement, topline and tail set correct, held well on the move, has excellent quality harsh double coat, more up on the leg than first. Moved and showed steadily.

2nd Waugh’s Glenrood Galaxy at Tribannon

Red brindle boy, loved his head, neat ears, correct eye shape, large teeth. Good forechest, good length of neck flowing in shoulders, would have liked a bit better body condition, showed with enthusiasm but his movement was difficult to assess as his mind wasn’t on the job today. Double coat, topline and tailset ok.

Wheaten brindle bitch with gorgeous feminine head, neat ears, large teeth, shown in profuse double coat, moved steadily, using her tail well on the move but letting it drop when stood. Good topline, moved well in front, she could do to lose a bit of weight, this would improve her overall balance.

2nd Saich’s Lindcoly Just a Dream NAF

Red puppy, another with a nice feminine head, large teeth, correct textured double coat, lovely tight feet, good topline, tail set ok, lots to like about her and I’m sure that she will increase in confidence as she is just 6 months old. 1st Shaw’s Tycadno Star Attraction at Honeyhall BCC & BIS/BPIS

Wheaten brindle girl, in my opinion she has the perfect proportions, she has an ultra feminine head but also the keen expression required of our breed, good stop, large teeth, correctly placed ears which she uses well. Good topline and tail set kept on the move, coat short but still a double coat of correct texture. She never stops showing and moves effortlessly round the ring, at one with the handler at all times. Couldn’t fault her movement today and she was handled to perfection.

Yearling Bitch – 1 entry

1st Saich’s Lindcoly Picture Perfect RBCC

Wheaten brindle bitch, pretty head, using her ears well, very large teeth. loved her size and shape, nice shoulder placement, good textured double coat, good topline and excellent tail set. Grey brindle bitch, had an excellent head, good stop, uses her ears well, she is a bigger bitch all round than first but still is feminine, her coat is short but of correct texture, she moves very well in front ,would just prefer her to drive out a bit more at the rear, but she covers the ground well. Good tailset and topline, very attentive to her handler.

Another nice wheaten girl, feminine head, large teeth, neat ears and profuse coat of correct texture. Nice topline and tail set, moved well front and rear. Cooperating well with her handler.

Judge Mrs Julie Petts

“Delighted to be invited to judge at this unique show, always a favourite of mine. I believe the overall entry increased and I wish the Club continued support and success in the coming years. My thanks to my two able stewards Moray and Hazel Thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated my quality entry. As always with this breed temperaments were superb and I had many very fine examples of the breed to judge making decisions very close. Though not a breed to be over presented I felt a little judicial trimming especially neck and shoulders would have greatly enhanced those who excelled here in conformation. Then I was faced with a conundrum when deciding BOB as my eventual winner was today a bit short of coat but her personality won her the day

Crufts 2024 – Cairn Terriers

It was an honour to be asked to judge the breed at Crufts. My thanks must go to my two ring stewards for keeping things moving smoothly, but mainly to the exhibitors for giving me a lovely entry and the privilege of allowing me to judge their dogs.

I was surprised to find a number of incorrect mouths and a number of upright shoulders. Movement can still be a problem with a lot moving close behind. But on the positive side heads were generally very good, with many having the required width of skull and muzzle with a deep stop. Temperaments were excellent and most were presented in good coat and condition. My main winners, I feel, could hold their own in the best of company. The Open dog class, with 19 entries and just 3 absentees, was a joy to judge with many worthy dogs being unplaced. And in the bitch classes I again had quality dogs being unplaced in some of the classes. The Open bitch class in particular I could have done with 5 red cards.

My Main winners were;

DCC; Hogarty’s Ch/IrCh Cadagio Another Day In Paradise

RDCC; Theodorsson’s Multi Ch Hjohoo’s Yes You Can

BCC & BOB; Theodorsson’s Hjoo’s I’m Perfect For Hjo

RBCC; Yates-Johnson’s Pendley Sea Breeze

BPIB; Shopland’s Sanderfield On The Rocks for Cherrycrack

BVIB; Marchant’s Ch Winetta Quest For Fame
