Sunday 3rd. December 2023

I would like to thank the MCTC Committee for giving me the opportunity to Judge their 39th. Championship Show.  I would particularly like to thank my Steward, Chris Petts, for his help in assisting me with my disability. I found my entry to be of good quality. There were a few dogs that were heavy in front and some that lacked free movement. Some classes exhibited a challenging scene for top honours, but I was very happy with my winners. It was a shame that the puppy classes had very few entries. This does not look good for the future of our hobby. Let us hope the situation improves to benefit prospects for the breed.

Veteran Dog or Bitch.  (5,2A).

1.            Dolan’s Ch. Glenrood  Scheherazade. A 10 yr lovely  wheaten brindle oldie in remarkable condition. Makes a very good outline with excellent features. Good head, body, legs. Still has plenty of ring presence. Moved well around the ring. BV.

2.            Inett, Harrison, King and Leighton’s  Ch. Carradine George Flies with Harkenleigh. A 9 yr dark brindle, heavier build and not as well balanced than 1. Did not move quite as freely as 1.

3.         Smith’s Cannwood Misty Dawn at Gethlee.

Minor Puppy Dog.  (1,0A).

1.    Sinclair’s Tycadno Quick Shot. An 8mth wheaten. Good head, correct bite, level topline and correct tailset. Well grown with a balanced outline. Moved well, but a little close behind. Will improve with maturity.

Puppy Dog.  (0)

Junior Dog.  (3,1A)

1.    Roberts’ Cannwood Moonlight Shadow. A 14 month wheaten brindle with good head, super teeth, good stop and well balanced outline. Nice length of neck, level topline and correct tailset. Strong hind quarters, but coat on the blow. Best mover of the two, liked him a lot.

2.    Inett and Harrison’s Carradine Ayer Friar. A 13mth red brindle, another good example, slightly smaller than 1, but still presented an excellent, balanced outline. Coat in super condition, moved well, but a little wayward.

Post Graduate Dog.  (2, 1A).

1.    Inett and Harrison’s Carradine Apple Jack. An excitable 14 month red dog. Very unsteady around the ring. Just about did enough to be judged, but difficult to give top marks. Nice enough conformation and will do better given time.

Limit Dog.  (6,3A).

1.    Munday’s  Lentrica Mystic Warrior. Dark brindle dog, well boned in build. Super head, with varminty look, level topline and correct tailset. Slightly heavy in front and moved well with drive. Pipped 2 to gain honours.

2.    Clark’s  Furythor Mr Bojangles by Lentrica. A grey brindle dog that gave 1 a challenge for first

Slightly lighter build than 1, but a well balanced outline and good conformation. Moved well. A close decision between the two.

Anthony Osborn (Judge)

Winner of The Best Head Competition. Ch Birselaw Caol Ila At Landbuck – Judged by Milly Jennings

It has been a few years since I was in the Cairn ring at a show, and this time i was chosen as the mystery judge for the Best Head in Show at the Midland Club Ch. show .

I do not go to many shows now, and never have a catalogue, also some of the exhibitors I do not really know, so I was unaware of which Cairn belonged to whom . I was very pleased with the Cairns that the Judge of the day,  Anthony Osborne had picked out as his choice of good heads, only one did not have quite as deep a stop as I wanted. I was looking for a head ‘small ,in proportion to the body ‘,with a deep stop, warm brown, slightly sunken eyes, correct ear set, not on the side of the head like a Westie, and of course a good bite . The hall was very cold, the weather forecast was not good, and I was aware that people wanted to get on their way home as soon as possible ,thank you for staying for me to see your lovely Cairns. I tried to make my choice as quickly as I could ,but checking up all the points that make a good head. I was pleased to see so many good heads, because in the reports on shows these days so many judges make no mention of the stop or ear set . Milly Jennings

Cairn Terrier Association 18th November 2023

Firstly I would like to thank the Committee of the CTA for inviting me to judge it’s Championship show, also for their hospitality and generous gifts. My thanks also go to my excellent steward Sharon Confue who, on her own, managed to organise the exhibitors ensuring the show ran smoothly, as well as supporting me, making the day stress free and enjoyable.

I had a good entry and thank my exhibitors for entering under me. I was very pleased with the overall quality of the Cairns, no obvious major faults, my only gripe with our breed at the moment is size, there are quite a few up to size exhibits in the ring at the moment, if we are not careful with our breeding this could lead to coarseness. I had some difficult decisions and was pleased with my final line up.

Darlington Championship show, Cairn Terriers

Not the biggest of entries but thank you to all who entered.  Just a couple of points which I think could be improved upon.  Firstly teeth – please do check your Cairn’s teeth to make sure they are clean.  This is important for the show ring as well as the dog’s health in the future.  Secondly, I think that stops could be improved.  The breed standard says “a decided indentation between the eyes with a definite stop.”  Many Cairns lacked this with hardly any difference in incline between muzzle and skull.

Puppy Dog – 0

Junior Dog – 1

1st – Jones & Arnold’s Tycadno Tom Foolery

A good example of the breed, he had a profuse coat and a very masculine head with deep stop and neat ears.  Adequate length of neck, clean shoulders and correct tail set. Nice Cairn temperament and strode around the ring with plenty of confidence.  Moved very well in front and showed well.

Post Graduate Dog – 0

Limit Dog – (4, 1A)

1st – Parker Tucker’s Uniquecottage Grey Borage

Good coat on this cream, double and of the correct texture.  Medium and well balanced with a strong head.  Straight in front with good bone.  Well muscled rear with nice bend of stifle.  Conformation all first class and I thought he was one of the best movers of the day.  I liked him a lot, I just wish he had that bit more oomph to show himself at his best. RDCC.

2nd – Munday’s Lentrica Mystic Warrior

Showy dark brindle.  I particularly liked his head, masculine with strong muzzle, good breadth of skull and expressive eyes.  Strong neck, level topline, correct tailset.  A shade more compact than winner but well balanced.  Handled and presented well.  Excellent rear movement.

3rd – Lamb & Saltmarsh’s Birselaw Dark Charmer for Macmoon Sh.cm Vw – smart grey brindle, of medium size.  Beautiful head.  Really steady mover and showed well.  Best Veteran

Open Dog – 4 (1A)

1st – Shannon, Storr & Middlehurst’s Brenndarcy It’s Magic Ai

Correct size, medium and well balanced with adequate bone.  Excellent double coat.  Straight front, correct lay of shoulder, level topline which he kept on the move.  Head of correct proportions with eyes of the correct shape and colour.  Good mouth.  Moved well, reaching out in front and driving from his well muscled rear.  Today he was on top form, he showed with animation.  Presented a lovely picture.  DCC.

2nd – Petts’ Ch Doonrae Sentinel

Light brindle, a longer cast Cairn than winner.  I loved his stance and the way he shows in the ring to show off his many attributes.  The way he does this accentuates his excellent flow and length of neck and he carries his head proudly. Level topline.  Good driving rear movement.  I know this dog is a well deserved Champion but I cannot help but think that his best is yet to come.  Today his coat was not at its best. Very well handled.

3rd – Purvis’ Mosspur Time and Again

Veteran Bitch – 1 (1A)

Puppy Bitch – (3)

A nice class of very promising puppies

1st – Petts’ Doonrae Tuesday’s Child

Ultra smart cream with a lovely jacket.  Pretty feminine head which she carried proudly.  Excels in length and flow of neck.  Level topline, kept on the move.  She had that typical Cairn puppy temperament, very mischievous, looking for anything she could get into, including the clumps of grass when she moved.  She reminded me of one of my own in her younger days.  But she settled and when she moved, she moved true.  She stood particularly well, well forward on her forepaws.  Yes I know she is bigger than some, I just hope that she has stopped growing.  BP

2nd – Shannon & Storr’s Brenndarcy Witches Promise,

I liked her a lot.  She has a lovely head, correct eye and neat ears, her conformation is first class. She moved very well and was a lively showgirl.  Nice red, with a new coat just coming in.  Medium and well balanced, nice flow of neck and straight front.  Nice depth of brisket for one so young.

She won over her litter sister who was nice but needed a bit more body and coat to complete the picture.

3rd – Wright’s Brenndarcy Spellbinding for Glenmonte

Junior Bitch (2)

1st – Munday’s Furythor Marvel at Me

Very showy dark brindle, a strong, well-built bitch who has a lot to like.  In excellent coat and well presented.  Correct size.  I liked her head, deep stop and broad skull, short muzzle, good mouth.

Moved well, both front and rear.

2nd – Parker Tucker’s Birselaw Floral Dancer of Uniquecottage

Cream, a slightly longer cast bitch than winner.  She had a correct textured coat and is of a nice type.  Pretty head, correct mouth, enough bone but she didn’t give off her best today, if she had it would have been a very close decision.  Moved OK when settled.

Post Graduate Bitch (3, 1A)

1st – Parker Tucker’s Uniquecottage Red Chervil

Red of nice size, medium throughout and balanced.  Feminine head of correct proportions.  Strong quarters, strong loin.  Handled well on the table, adequately boned.  In correct double coat.  When settled she moved true both ways.

2nd Dodds’ Droverlaw Messie Bessie

Brindle with an excellent, rather profuse coat of correct texture.  Lovely head. Less coat would show of her good proportions as she handled well on the table.  She would also benefit from losing a little weight which might give her a bit more animation in the ring.

Limit Bitch (3)

1st – Percy’s Winetta Frankly My Dear

Cream bitch with the desired dark points.  She presented a lovely clean outline with enough daylight under her.  Medium sized and well balanced with the most lovely well proportioned head with deep stop, broad skull and expressive eyes giving that true Cairn expression.  She had a good depth of brisket and straight front, well boned with a level topline and strong loin.  Enough neck.  She moved out very well, driving from her well muscled rear.  True in front, good reach.  Just sparkled today. BCC.

2nd – Soper’s Elitecharm Showgirl

A sound, dark brindle bitch with a typical head and expression.  Nice length of neck flowing into clean shoulders.  Strong back, level topline, well angulated rear.  In good coat.  Showed well, moved OK.  Very unlucky to meet 1 in such fine form.

3rd – Purvis’ Springtime Rose at Mosspur

Open Bitch (2, 1A)

1st – Felters & Rumens’ Ch Birselaw Caol Ila at Landbuck

Dark red brindle in profuse coat.  Correct size with enough neck.  Well balanced head, good mouth, level topline, strong loin. Well muscled in rear.  Drove from behind with adequate width and reached out in front.  Showed well, good rapport with handler, wagging her tail all the time.    On the day she appeared a little low to ground, the grass was long.  A worthy Champion nevertheless.  RBCC

Leeds CH Show—CAIRN TERRIERS

MY thanks to the committee for this appointment and my stewards for their competent help.

The last time I judged I commented on the poor heads that were evident in quite a number of exhibits..Unfortunately poor heads with hardly a stop are still with us .

This time I was concerned to find a few with lighter bone than is ideal for a Cairn terrier.Cairn bone is always medium. There were also a few with thin feet. They should be well padded and round.

Our ring was uneven in places and some had difficulty getting into their stride because of this. Also the grass was not as short as I would have liked. Some exhibits appeared lower to ground  and would  most probably have fared much better on shorter grass .

South Wales and West of England Cairn Terrier Club Open Show Friday 9th June 2023

held in conjunction with Three Counties Championship Show

I would like to thank the SW&WECTC for the honour of being invited to judge their Open Show. Great thanks also must go to all the exhibitors who entered under me and were so sporting and good humoured with my placing on such an oppressively hot day. I was honoured and delighted with such a great entry.  Due to the heat, in some classes I didn’t move the whole class prior to judging each exhibit individually.   A slightly cooling breeze later enable normal procedure to recommence.  There were some lovely youngsters shown which is most encouraging for the future.  I must congratulate and thank my hard working steward Gerry for running the  ring so smoothly  and efficiently.

Judge Alison Waites (Svendalens)

Three Counties – 9th June

Thank you to all of the exhibitors who entered under me and gave me the privilege to go over and judge their dogs – it really was a true honour and it was a delight to have such a fantastic entry. Thank you too to my super organised and professional steward Gerry.

On the day sadly the ring surface of the original ring was not acceptable and I personally felt that I would not get the most out of the dogs if we had continued outdoors.   I would like to apologise for the last minute change which resulted in us being undercover and using the wet weather ring. Sadly the weather (being hot) and the tannoy announcements understandably unsettled some of the dogs.

In general the exhibits were in good condition and presented well. I did find some exhibits with eyes which were too round for my liking which takes away from the cairn expression, we also need to be mindful on the size of our cairns, there were a wide range of sizes being exhibited on the day.

I am pleased with my final line up in the challenges – and ultimately my BOB and RBOB.  I would like to remind exhibitors that if you are in the final line up you are there for a reason and do not give up on your dog. The result on the day could have been different if  exhibitors had continued to show their dogs to their full potential.

Minor Puppy Dog (2,0)

1.Robert’s Cannwood Moonlight Shadow Won the class on showmanship today. Slightly smaller size to No2. Good head with correct ear set, which were used to advantage, dark eye, good bite with large teeth. On the move pulled himself up to show off movement.

Junior Dog (4, 3a)

  1. Jones & Arnold’sTycadnoTom Foolery. A lovely exhibit of a cairn, really disappointed on the day as he didn’t bring his cairn attitude to the ring, it’s evident he has a strong connection with his handler. He has a true cairn head with an endearing expression accentuated by a dark eye, lovely large teeth.  Flowing neck onto well set shoulders. Moved well. I look forward to watching this boys show career

CAIRN TERRIER

I would like to thank the Committee of Birmingham Dog Show for their hospitality and the exhibitors for their entries on the day of King Charles III’s Coronation.

I found there was variation in the size and quality of the Cairns. There were some exhibits with heavy shoulders and wide fronts, which reflected in their movement, and some were shown in very short coat. Overall I was very pleased with my main winners.

CAIRN TERRIER CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW

It was an honour and a pleasure to be invited to judge this show, thank you to the Officers and Committee.  On my first visit to this show  I accompanied the judge Mrs Heery, a couple of years later 1988  I showed a pup there which I had purchased from Carole Templeton – Larchlea Show Off who some of you may remember was very naughty in the ring!  I have such fond memories of going to the show many times after that!

A big thank you to Willie and Sheona who were an excellent taxi service  and to my steward thank you for efficiently overseeing the ring.

Maggie Shopland (Judge)

Scottish Breeds Championship Show Cairn Terrier 25th March 2023

Judge: Mrs Jennifer Fairweather (Ock cairns)

I would like to thank the Scottish Breeds Canine show committee for my appointment to judge at their show and for making me feel so welcome. I would also like to thank all the cairn exhibitors for their entry, remember you will always take home the best cairn on the day what ever the judge says!

I was delighted with my Challenge Certificate winners and so proud my BOB was placed 2nd in the champion stakes that day.

All the cairns behaved so well but there were a couple who were reluctant to let me see in their mouths!

I was a bit concerned that several of the cairns had level bites, jumbled front teeth and dirty teeth so breeders please pay attention when breeding, mouths are important to a working cairn as they need to be able to grip their prey! Movement was not good in many exhibits and this is another thing that breeders should take note of. Another of my concerns was the lack of a fore chest in many of the cairns. The breed standard says cairns should stand well forward, I didn’t always see this on the day. However my DCC, RCC, BCC, RBCC and BPIB I felt were all outstanding cairns and I wish them luck in future shows.

BCC and BOB given to Mrs A Waugh with Ch Glory Daze at Tribannon.

RCC Mr A & Mr R A Felters & Rumens Birselaw Caol Ila at Landbuck.

DCC was given to Mrs M Hogarty, Cadagio Another Day in Paradise NAF.

RCC Miss L Hiam Carradine Arfa Pint JW.

BPIB Mrs P Clarke Furythor Mr Bojangles by Lentrica. In this challenge brother, sister and one other puppy from junior dog challenged for BP. Very little to choose between these three lovely puppies but I chose the dog puppy. His handler had a job to keep him in check while showing but I thought he showed better, had a better coat and head. The brother and sister are two lovely puppies who will change places at another show.

Puppy Dog Entries: 2 Absentees: 0

Two siblings, very similar puppies with little to choose between them.

1st Place Mrs P Clarke Furythor Mr Bojangles by Lentrica. He is a silver brindle although still to finish growing his head furnishing. A correct double coat. He has a good length of neck into sloping shoulders, good stop, all in all a very nice head, dark eye and neat ears. He has a level topline and tail set correct moved with drive although playing his handler up a bit.

2nd Place Ms H & Mr G Young & Lithgow, Furythor Orion. A very nice puppy very similar comments to 1st. Just lost out to 1st as preferred 1st’s coat and head.

Junior Dog Entries: 3 Absentees: 0

1st Place Mrs M Hogarty, Cadagio Another Day in Paradise NAF. DCC. This lovely red dog is just over a year old so still has some maturing to do but his appearance, conformation and showmanship made him stand out in the challenge for the DCC. He was a bit short of coat but what was there was of the correct type so I was reluctant to penalise this. He has a good stop, large clean teeth with a scissor bite. Dark hazel eyes, neat ears and a lovely expression giving him a lovely masculine head, full of mischief! A cairn bred to do his job! His fore chest enabled him to stand well forward as he should do. Ribs correct shape, his topline was level and held on the move. A very good mover, driving from the rear. A natural showman, once in full coat should do well.

2nd Place Mrs J A & Mr G Jones & Arnold Tycadno Tom Foolery. Wheaten in full coat, dark eye and very nice head with dark points. Correct tail set and level topline moved well. Not much between these two dogs, just the first moved better.

3rd Place  Mrs A Waugh Swing Dancer at TribannonClass 45.

He too has a lovely head and expression. Topline, level and held on the move. His correct angulations meant he would move well. His tail set was bang on. Coat, correct texture but still growing. His mouth is correct. Splitting hairs between the DCC and RCC, two lovely dogs.

CRITIQUE

CAIRN TERRIERS 11th March 2023

A very big thank you to Crufts for this very prestigious judging appointment. What an honour and the pinnacle of anyones judging career, and what an absolutely fabulous day in the Cairn ring.

Thank you to all of the exhibitors, both from home and from abroad, and thank you to my stewards, Kim and Ken, who kept me on the straight and narrow most of the time.

The quality of the majority of the Cairns was excellent.

I think that this was a very unique day for the Cairn Breed.

On a general note, movement could have been better. Quite a few dogs had jumbled or missing teeth and some had dirty teeth!  Coats were generally very good, but there were a few open coats, and some had ‘products’ on their coats, which hadn’t been groomed out properly. Temperaments of our breed were sound.

OPEN DOG – ENTRIES 13 (1 Abs)

What an absolutely stunning class, I was spoilt for choice, however it turned out to be a family affair.

1st Theodorsson’s Multi Ch Hjohoo’s Yes Hjo Can (Handled by Merril Schmitt), and what a duo they made. This is one special dog, as I have said before a ‘once in a lifetime dog’.

Handler and dog were as one, it was a pleasure to watch them. The show ring was his and didn’t he know it.

There is nothing I can say that has already been said by judges that have previously had the pleasure to go over him.  He certainly was a ‘show stopper’. I was honoured to award him the D.C.C. and B.O.B. He was also shortlisted in the Terrier Group.

2nd Theodorsson’s US Ch/se(u) Ch/dkCh/nouCh. Hjohoo’s It’s Hjour Time to Shine. Red, with good coat. Litter brother to 1st. Another excellent dog from this kennel, out of a slightly bigger mould than his brother, but preferred the conformation and movement of 1st.

Midland Cairn Terrier Club Single Breed Open Show

Saturday 4th March 2023 (Morning)

Thank you to the Committee and Officers for their well organised show and to the exhibitors who entered and who all accepted my placings with good favour.  I was originally given this appointment for 2020 and all good things come to those that wait.

Class 1 – VD/B  1/0

1st Dolan’s Ch Glenrood Scheherazade

An absolute favourite of mine.  I had the pleasure of first going over her in 2016 and very little has changed about her since then.  An eye catching cream bitch.  Very feminine, a beautiful  expression and flowing lines.  She still strides out well and really doesn’t look anywhere near 9.5 years old.  (BVIS)

Class 2 – PD 1/1

Class 3 – JD 1/0

1st Waugh’s Swing Dancer at Tribannon

A wheaten, presenting a balanced outline.  Dark expressive eye, with large teeth and correct scissor bite and neat ears.  Held level topline on the move and he has well let down hocks which produced good rear drive.

Class 4 – PGD 5/0

1st Waugh’s Glenrood Galaxy at Tribannon

Well up to size but balanced throughout.  Large teeth with correct scissor bite, a deep stop and a well furnished head.  Good muscle tone and correct angulation both front and rear produced movement with reach and drive.  A striking masculine dog that shouts look at me.  He lost the plot a bit in the challenge, but so much to like about him.  (BD, BOS)

2nd Keeves’s Seveek Guilded Dream

I liked this dog for his size and balance.  A good quality red coat.  Dark expressive eye.  Level topline.  Movement was fine when viewed from the front and behind but would prefer a little more rear drive.

3rd Bingham’s Carradine Bumbling Boris

Class 5 – LD 1/0

1st Munday’s Lentrica Mystic Warrior

A masculine and alert dark brindle dog, with a super coat.  Balanced throughout and good muscle and bone, standing well forward on forepaws.  Deep stop, large teeth and correct scissor bite and a dark expressive eye.

Class 6 – OD 2/1

1st Shannon and Storr’s Brenndarcy It’s Magic Ai

A balanced, masculine, alert wheaten dog with a good quality coat.  A beautiful, dark expressive eye.  A deep stop and a well proportioned head, I liked his width of muzzle.  Good forechest, neck flows into shoulders and level topline.  Tail well set on.  (RBD)

Class 7 PB 4/0

1st Munday’s Furythor Marvel At Me

11 months old, confident show girl.  Feminine throughout.  Head of good proportions, correct scissor bite and dark expressive eyes.  Good but not excessive bone, well muscled and in great coat.  (BPB, BPIS)

2nd Parkin’s Svendalens Dancing Queen

8 months old, feminine dark brindle.  Balanced throughout.  Good deep chest, correct width.  Level topline, small neat feet.  Handled well but preferred the movement of 1.

3rd Saich’s Lindcoly Walking in Menphis

Class 8 JB 3/1

1st Dolan’s Glenrood Midnight Spell

An eye catching, feminine dark brindle, presented in good coat.  Well proportioned head.  Balanced throughout, held level topline on the move, good rear angulation.

A beautiful feminine dark brindle of correct balance.  Dark eye, large teeth with correct scissor bite.  Well muscled, level topline, tailset spot on.  Moved well and showed up on her toes.  A lot to like.

2nd Keeves’s Seveek Peaches n Dreams

A balanced red brindle in great coat.  Dark expressive eye.  Showed up on her toes.  Preferred the depth of forechest on 1.

3rd Matcalf Sault’s Cannwood Can’t Get Enough

Class 10 LB 6/0

A quality class, that gave me some tough choices. There was great variety in type.

1st Thompson’s Castleline Maitree

Feminine, balanced wheaten, shown in super coat.   Good width of head, dark expressive, correctly shaped eye.  Level topline, tail well set on.  Good muscle tone and a strong supple loin.  Correct angulation both front and rear, hocks well let down.  She moved with ease showing good forward reach and rear drive. (BB, BIS)

2nd Felters and Rumens’ Birselaw Caol Ila at Landbuck

Different in type to 1 but still super quality.  A rugged, but by no means ragged dark brindle.  Well furnished head, beautiful expressive eye, good width of muzzle and correct scissor bite.  Neck flowed into a level topline.  Good, but not excessive bone.  Correct angulation both front and rear.  This was a very close decision, but today she didn’t match the flowing movement of 1.  (RBB, RBIS)

Feminine and balanced dark grey brindle.  Pleasing expression.  Strong jaw, correct scissor bite, good width of muzzle.  Neck flowed into shoulders.  Well muscled body.  Small neat feet and she showed up on her toes.

1st Metcalf Sault’s Cannwood Quiet Reflections

A silver brindle with desirable dark points in a coat of good quality.  Beautiful, correctly shaped dark expressive eye.  Deep forechest, good spring of rib and small neat feet.  She moves well.
