Critiques 2022

Midland CTC Championship Show

December 18th 2022

I was honoured to be invited to judge the Midland Cairn Terrier Championship show on December 18th.

Thank you to the officers and all the committee for the invite and a special mention to my stewards Chris Petts and Gerry Leighton for looking after me so well.

I would also like to thank all the exhibitors for the wonderful entry, braving the awful weather forecast and allowing me the privilege to judge their dogs.

I found a number of heads with long foreface which lacked strength in the muzzle, a cause of concern for the breed, although I found no incorrect mouths. Rear movement needs improvement as some were extremely close and although some coats were on the blow on the whole most were good and well presented. I was very happy with my main winners

Veteran Dog Or Bitch – 5

1st Dolan’s CH Glenrood Scheherazade – 9 year old wheaten bitch in excellent coat and condition. Best of heads with neat ears and correct mouth. Moved with drive and showed all out. A credit to her owner. BV

2nd Clarke’s CH Lentrica Dolly Daydream JW – 8 year old dark brindle bitch. Beautiful head with correct eyes and desired expression, correct mouth. In good coat but carrying extra weight which showed in her movement.

3rd Inett, Harrison, King & Leighton’s CH Carradine George Flies with Harkinleigh

Minor Puppy Dog – 6 ( 3 Absent)

1st Clarke’s Furythor Mr Bojangles – 7 month old harsh coated brindle with masculine head, lovely dark eyes with mischievous expression, good stop, strong muzzle and good mouth. Moved well keeping his topline, good tail set. Lovely showman BPD and BPIS.

2nd Jones Tycadno Tom Foolery – 8 month old wheaten with the best of heads, strong skull and muzzle, deep stop and correct mouth. Needs to fill out and finish developing in forechest. Carrying a little extra weight which did effect his movement slightly but lots to like and he should have a very bright future. I will watch his progress with interest.

3rd Keeves Seveek Toby

Puppy Dog – 2 ( 2 Absent )

Junior Dog – 4 ( 1 Absent )

1st Petts Doonrae Sentinel – just short of 18 months this red brindle dog is up to size but well proportioned and balanced. Masculine head with fabulous expression, good mouth with large teeth, nice length of neck flowing into well laid shoulders, correct forechest and spring of rib. Moved with drive once settled. Shown in good coat of correct texture he just needs to fill out to complete the picture. He won the RCC due to his ring presence and showmanship. RDCC

2nd Hiam’s Carradine Arfa Pint – 15 month red brindle dog I have admired from the ringside throughout his puppy career. Smaller built than the first but so well balanced. Best of heads with correct mouth, neat ears. Good length of neck, well laid shoulders and correct forechest. Moved very well and is so attentive to his handler. Shown in shorter coat today he just lost out but I’m sure his time will come.

3rd Keeves Seveek Guilded Dream

Post Graduate Dog – 3

1st Waugh’s Glenrood Galaxy at Tribannon – at just 14 months this dark brindle is well up to size. Strong masculine head, good expression, correct mouth, level topline and correct tail set. He had good reach in front and give his handler a hard time but moved ok once settled.

2nd Purvis Mosspur Time and Again – wheaten brindle with dark mask. He was of good size and well balanced with nice length of neck, correct shoulders and level top line. Would prefer a more masculine head and he was close in rear movement today.

3rd Lucas & Tobutt’s Seveek Country Lad

Limit Dog – 4 ( 2 Absent )

1st Shannon, Storr & Middlehurst’s Brenndarcy It’s Magic AI – Quality wheaten with good head, correct eye, well defined stop, neat ears and correct bite. Nice length of neck flowing into well laid shoulders, firm level topline and well set on tail. Moved well in his class. Lots to like but he was not in the best of coats today and lacked amination in the challenge.

2nd Munday’s Lentricia Mystic Warrior – dark brindle dog with masculine head, correct eye and expression, good mouth. Shown in the best of coats he is well balanced with good bone and strong feet. Front movement was better than the rear today and top line could be firmer.

Open Dog – 4 ( 1 Absent )

1st Firth’s CH Cairngold Chico – Quality Red dog who I liked as a puppy. Lovely to go over on the table, he has the best of heads with wonderful expression, deep stop and correct mouth. Nice length of neck, well laid shoulders, level topline and correct tail set. Shown in tip top condition he moved with ease. DCC

2nd Inett & Harrison’s CH Carradine In n’Out  Mr Sprout – Dark brindle of correct proportions Loved his head and expression, small neat ears, good length of neck and good forechest. Shown in full coat and excellent condition just preferred rear movement of the winner.

3rd Dennis, Waites & Goddard’s CH Good Times Ahead with Oudenarde

Special Beginners Dog or Bitch – 2 ( 1 Absent )

1st Metcalf Sault’s Cannwood Can’t Get Enough – wheaten bitch with dark points, lovely feminine head with good stop and correct mouth. Shown in full coat she moved well but just needs to firm up on her top line

Minor Puppy Bitch – 7 ( 3 Absent )

This was a hard class to judge as all were of different types and in different stages of development.

1st – Saich’s Lindcoly Here Comes Oh Shi ( NAF ) – 8 month wheaten brindle with dark mask who best fitted the standard. Liked her size and shape. Lovely head with fabulous expression, good stop, neat ears and good mouth. She moved very well. Shown in  profuse coat she sometimes held her tail proud but not always, I feel trimming would help here.

2nd Dennis & Waites Svendalens Snowdrop – 8 month wheaten bitch, more rangy than 1st she had a level topline and better tail set but not as sound in movement and not the head or expression of the wiiner

3rd Munday’s Furythor Marvel At Me

Puppy Bitch – 4 ( 1 Absent )

1st  Waugh’s Dazzll Me at Tribannon – 10 month old rangy wheaten pup with a gorgeous head. She is well up to size and I really hope she does not grow any more. Dark eyes with fabulous expression, good stop, strong muzzle and large teeth. Lovely reach of neck flowing into correct shoulders, good forechest, level topline and correct tail set. She was a picture standing. Although a bit reluctant at first with a little encouragement she moved out ok and settled well. BPB – unfortunately when it came to the challenge for BPIS she was not co-operating and showed the cairn stubbornness we all love.

2nd  Osborn’s Be Gin Again at Tweslem – 10 month old wheaten brindle who it turns out is the litter sister of the class winner. A lot of the comments above apply, another lovely bitch pup I hope does not grown on.  She moved well, I particularly liked her rear movement. Shown in shorter coat she does not quite have the ring presence of her litter sister yet but I’m sure her time will come. Two lovely bitches who could swap places in time.

3rd Saich’s Lindcoly Here Comes Oh Shi ( NAF )

Junior Bitch – 4

1st Dolan’s Glenrood Midnight Spell – 14 month dark bitch, another who is up to size. The most feminine of heads with beautiful expression, neat ears and good mouth. She has lovely length of neck, clean shoulders and excels in front. Level topline, good spring of rib and correct tail set. In good coat of correct texture she moved well both ways and won this class on movement.

2nd Felters & Rumens Birselaw Caol Ila at Landbuck – well coated 16 month red brindle. Liked her size and shape. She has correct eyes and expression, good stop and neat ears. Head needs time to finish as narrower in muzzle. Nice length of neck, correct shoulders, level topline and good tail set. Moved ok in front but today was turning both back feet out which effected back movement and spoilt the overall picture.

3rd Firth’s Birselaw Cora at Cairngold

Post Graduate Bitch – 8 ( 2 Absent )

A lovely class with some very promising bitches and my first three were all worthy winners. I was splitting hairs when it came to final choices.

1st – Keeves Seveek Peaches n Dreams – really liked the size and shape of this girl. She give her handler a hard time but eventually settled down to show her worth. Lovely head with wicked expression, good stop, neat ears and correct mouth. Enough neck she had correct shoulders and a level topline. Shown in profuse coat of correct texture she was full of spirit – naughty but very nice!

2nd Bateman & Ravenhill’s Carradine Mon Mon Sherry – a quality grey brindle bitch of correct size and shape. Loved her head and expression also. Everything in its right place which showed in her movement, a true showgirl her tail never stopped wagging. She pushed hard for 1st place. In the end it came down to the harshness of the coat on the legs of the winner – as I say splitting hairs!

3rd Osborn’s Tweslam Be Gin The Magic ( AI )

Limit Bitch – 6 ( 1 Absent )

1st Inett & Harrison’s Carradine Wilma – Red brindle bitch who is so well balanced. Feminine head with mischievous expression, strong muzzle and correct mouth, topped off with lovely small neat ears. Enough neck, good shoulders and an excellent forechest. She has good bone, lovely straight legs, correct feet, level topline and good tail set. Well presented she moved with drive and pushed hard for top honors. RBCC & RBIS

2nd Soper’s Elitecharm Showgirl – Light wheaten brindle with sweet feminine well proportioned head, dark eye and correct mouth. Medium neck, clean shoulders, good front, level topline and correct tail set. Moved and showed well.

3rd Metcalf Sault’s Cannwood Quiet Reflections

Open Bitch – 10 ( 2 Absent )

This bitch class was a pleasure to judge, full of quality which made my job interesting.

1st Felters & Rumens CH Landbuck La Voix – Beautiful wheaten brindle bitch who fits the breed standard so well. A pleasure to go over on the table. Excellent feminine head with expressive dark eyes of correct shape and size, good stop, neat ears and correct bite. Lovely length of neck flowing into well laid shoulders, correct forechest, lovely spring of rib, level topline which she holds on the move and neat well set tail. Correct leg length with good angulation and bend of stifle she moved freely with reach and drive giving a beautiful balanced outline. BCC & BIS

2nd  Firth’s Ch Cairngold Chiquitita – another quality bitch with harsh red coat shown in tip top condition. Good head, strong muzzle, correct mouth and neat ears. Nice length of neck, correct shoulders, level topline and well place tail. She moved out with drive and is a worthy champion. Today I just preferred the expresion of the winner.

3rd Waugh’s CH Glory Daze at Tribannon

Brace – 1

1st Mrs Dolans Brace – lovely pair of wheaten’s so similar in type, moved around the ring with ease. Beautifully presented as always by this kennel.

Cairn Terriers

Firstly I would like to thank the Exhibitors for their entry, it is some what 5 years since I last judge the breed, I thought that the Limit and Open classes of both sexes contained some outstanding quality and it was a pleasure to judge them.

Puppy Dog (5 Entries) Abs: 4

1st: BALLINGER’S Cloverbrook Game Set N Match, a silver brindle of just 6mths, great pity he was alone, however he is pleasing in make & shape, typical head & expression, good bone, correct harsh coat, moved & showed well once settled, an interesting prospect.

Junior Dog (3 Entries)

1st: PETTS Doonrae Sentinel, a well balanced red brindle dog, he has a good head & expression, fair reach of neck & well laid shoulders, liked his well made body & shapely quarters, moved freely & with purpose, well presented & showed well, he is still a youngster & given a few more months of maturity I’m sure he will certainly trouble the best.

2nd: HIAM’S Carradine Arfa Pint JW, a classy red with dark points, of a smaller frame, has masculine head with good stop, pleasing in make & shape, moved with drive, preferred front movement of 1st, good showman & was well handled.

3rd: JONES & ARNOLD’S Tycadno Tom Foolery

Post Grad Dog (3 Entries)

1st: WAUGH’S Glenrood Galaxy at Tribannon, a quality dark brindle dog full of vitality, very masculine in outline, liked his keen expression with neat ears & the desired stop, good reach of neck, pleasing in body, correct harsh coat, free easy mover with good stride, another given time to mature, should do very well.

2nd: LUCAS Seveek Country Lad, a harsh coated silver brindle, his head is typical, nice neck & shoulders, level topline & correct tailset, not the movement or showmanship of the winner.

3rd: BINGHAM’S Carradine Bumbling Boris

Limit Dog (6 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: SHANNON / STORR & MIDDLEHURST’S Brenndarcy It’s Magic (ai), a typical wheaten, standing well on forepaws, scores in head & expression, level topline, good overall make & shape, moved freely & showed well, I liked this dog very much, just felt his coat was between stages compared to those placed above him in the challange, however he was a contender for the RCC, one that can never be over looked.

2nd:MUNDAY’S Lentrica Mystic Warrior, a dark brindle one that was in good condition with correct harsh coat, nicely proportioned outline, well formed head with dark eye & well placed ears, a truly honest exhibit that moved well both ways, a close decision, just prefered the forechest of 1st.

3rd: BYRNE’S Carradine Howzat Howard

Open Dog (3 Entries)

1st: FIRTH’S Ch Cairngold Chico JW, a well known mature red, loved his size & stance, obviously seen him before & sometimes from the ringside I thought he appeared a little short of neck, however after handling him & watch him show to advantage, this is not the case, his head is masculine with a good expression, excellent depth of body with well sprung ribs, his quarters are strong with a correct tail set, moves really well, he was shown in good form with correct double coat, won the CC over some strong opposition, in the challenge for Best of Breed, I thought the bitch put a touch more effort into her showmanship.

2nd:INETT & HARRISON’S Ch Carradine In ‘N’ Out Mr Sprout, a well made dark brindle dog of quality, first class presentation & performance, a lovely dog to go over, great outline, moved freely, RDCC, these 3 exhbits could easliy change places on personal preference, the 3rd has many fine attributes & a champion in his own right.

3rd: DENNIS / GODDARD & WAITES Ch Good Times Ahead with Oudenarde

Veteran Dog / Bitch (2 Entries)

1st: LAMB & SALTMARSH’s Birselaw Dark Charmer For Macmoon Sh.CM VW, a dark brindle 8 year old, pleasing outline with typical head & expression, good confirmation, moved well.

Puppy Bitch (8 Entries) Abs: 5

1st: BALLINGER’S Cloverbrook Forget Me Not, a silver brindle, litter sister to the puppy dog, & the same comments apply, full of confidance, moved & showed well for one so young. Best Puppy.

2nd:DENNIS & WAITES Svendalens Snow Drop, a nice sized wheaten one, typical in outline, level topline & correct tailset, prefered winners head & expression, moderate bone, moved ok in profile.

3rd: SAICH’S Lindcoly Here Comes Oh Shi (NAF)

Junior Bitch (5 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: FELTERS & RUMENS Birselaw Caol Ila At Landbuck, a real eyecatcher, feminine head with a keen expression, she is shapely in outline, well set & carried tail, her red brindle coat was harsh, moved true, given time, one surely destined for the upper house.

3rd: FIRTH’S Birselaw Cora at Cairngold

Post Graduate Bitch (2 Entries)

1st: TESTER’S Airytykes Excuse Me

2nd: METCALF-SAULT’S Cannwood Can’t Get Enough,

I thought these 2 were of similar in make & shape, both typical in outline, both moved with drive, the winner had the better front & coat hence the placing.

Limit Bitch (6 Entries) Abs: 1

1st: INETT & HARRISON’S Carradine Wilma, very classy brindle with outstanding qualities, excellent coat & condition, beautiful head, appealed for outline & proportions, good medium bone, moved with purpose & put on a good performance.

2nd:DOLAN’S Glenrood Dance Til Dusk, a good type of silver brindle with lots to like, nice head & correct expression, pleasing in make & shape, moved & showed very well, not disgraced standing 2nd in this class.

1st: FELTERS & RUMENS Ch Landbuck La Voix, a pleasure to judge this shapely silver brindle, she oozes quality & breed type, loved her head with well placed ears, good stop & strengh of muzzle, quite a naughty wicked expression, fair reach of neck, good spring of rib & level topline, well made quarters which she uses on the move, in great form, I thought her most impressive & of ideal size & balance, pleased to award her the CC & Best of Breed.

2nd: FIRTH’S Ch Cairngold Chiquitita, a beautiful balanced red bitch, perfect harsh double coat, again lovely head & expression, sound mover & assertive show girl, overcame some strong opposition in this class & the winners of Junior & Limit. RBCC.

Championship Show 12th November 2022

Frank Kane (Hirontower)

It was a great honour to be invited to judge the Championship Show of this historic breed club. A good entry of 91 Cairns and a sporting atmosphere all through. I think that the breed club shows are increasingly important as the general championship shows struggle in the current social climate, and are so important for the promotion and preservation of breeds, and indeed often draw entries which reflect more accurately the state of the breed. I really enjoyed the entry – such a rustic workmanlike breed. Most were presented in good coat and not over-presented. However, some could have been cleaner in their coat presentation. The main problems I saw were in eye size and shape – too many large round eyes, and strength of muzzle was lacking in some. Great temperaments throughout.

My thanks go to Secretary, Lynda Hughes and her team for their warm welcome and hospitability and for my ‘warming’ gift! And to my efficient steward, Sharon Confue a dyed in the wool Cairn fan.

Best in Show was the bitch Carradine Wilma, winning her first CC from Limit absolutely unexaggerated Cairn type and a great mover.

Reservice Best in Show Cadagio Your One of Us, the reserve CC winner, animated showgirl with superb outline and great carriage which put over the Best Opposite Sex Ch Cairngold Chico, red dog of great type, ultra sound and in excellent coat. He was the sire of several class winners (and I gather sire of my BIS winner in Sweden recently!) Just lacked a touch of terrier spirit against the girls on the day.

Best Puppy a beautiful bitch on her first outing Pendley Sea Breeze – her litter brother was Best Dog Puppy too.

Best Veteran the bitch Ch Glenrood Sheherazade.

Veteran Dog or Bitch (4, 0)

  1. DolanChGlenrood Scheherazade 9 years wheaten in excellent coat – lovely balance of leg length and body. Excellent head proportions and lovely neat ears. Super feet. Carried herself well. Best Veteran.
  2. LambBirselawDark Charmer for Macmoon Sh.CM VW  8 years dark brindle a lovely moving dog of excellent proportions, good topline and full of type. I slightly preferred the head of winner who was a touch more animated in her carriage – but a super veteran.
  3. KeevesChSeveek Hopes Dreams JW Sh.CM

Minor Puppy Dog (7, 2)

1 Yates-Johnson Pendley Seafarer 8 months appealed for his leg length and balance and a really good mover at both ends. In super coat. His head is of good proportions but needs time to finish in foreface. Scored in topline and carriage here.

2 Jones Tycadno Tom Foolery 7 months wheaten just a little heavy in body which shows in his topline. A lovely head with strength in skull and foreface. Very good mover and good coat. Pressed very hard. When he loses his puppy fat will do very well.

3 Clarke Furythor Mr Bojangles

Puppy Dog (4, 2)

1 Hogarty Cadagio Another Day in Paradise 10 months red -lovely size and proportions and a very good mover. Good skull and ears. In excellent coat and carried his topline and tail well.

2 Shopland Cherrycrack Siegfried 10 months, bigger dog who looks a little long for balance at the moment. I liked his head and expression and he moved well. It will be interesting to see how he matures. At the moment in a teenage stage.

Junior Dog (5, 0) 2 top quality dogs to head this class

1 Waugh Glenrood Galaxy at Tribannon 14 months brindle of lovely balance and scored here in his head proportions and expression. A very good mover and carried himself well and scored in his front reach.  I am sure he will have a good future.

2 Petts Doonrae Sentine 17 months my winner at first sight – lovely outline and proportions and carries himself well. Excellent leg length and good topline and tail. I feel his head needs time to finish but should end up at the top. I was splitting hairs here.

3 Hiam Carradine Arfa Pint JW

Post Graduate Dog (1, 0)

1 Purvis Mosspur Time and Again 3 years brindle, of standard size, good proportions and leg length. I would prefer him a little more masculine in head. Sound and active mover. His topline could be firmer.

Limit Dog (6, 1)

1 Byrne Carradine Howzat Howard 3 years old dark brindle in superb coat. A very good mover and carries himself well all through. The tail carriage is a touch high for my interpretation. Good strength and stop to head. I would prefer smaller ears and eyes. a good winner of this class.

2 Shopland Cherrycrack Horatio 20 months wheaten I liked his head and expression very much. Good coat. Could make more of himself standing and moving. Won this pace on his quarters and topline over.

3 Munday Lentrica Mystic Warrior

Open Dog (8, 2)

1 Firth Ch Cairngold Chico JW 5 years red, lovely size and balance, not overdone anywhere and ultra sound on the move. In super coat. He has correct bone and super feet in which he scored here. Won CC. In the challenge for BIS he had not the animation of the bitches.

2 Inett Ch Carradine In Out Mr Sprout 3 years dark brindle of good proportions and a really good mover. Well-made throughout and in good coat. Quality head, good expression. I slightly preferred head of winner but a lovely quality Cairn. RDCC

2 Munday Furythor Marvel at Me 7 months brindle beautiful head and expression, good body length, excellent movement. I just preferred leg length of the winner but she is a lovely puppy as was the next in line.

3 Thomas Tycandno Dark Star

Puppy Bitch (4, 0)

1 Bubb Wandris Please Yourself 11 months grey brindle a real showgirl full of attitude and scored here in her topline and carriage. She is a touch long in foreface accentuated by lack of furnishings.  Excellent rear action. Can firm up in feet in front.

2 Parker-Tucker Sandrio Zinnia of Uniquecottage 8 months brindle. I liked her enormously and preferred her head piece to the winner. In very good coat sound mover but needs a little more confidence to do really well.

3 Saich Lindcoly Red Squirrel

Junior Bitch (6, 2) 3 good bitches at the top here.

1 Felters & Rumens Birselaw Caol Ila at Landbuck almost 15 months brindle super body and movement and lovely leg length and balance. She needs to finish in muzzle now. Good expression and ears. In excellent coat. Rustic and totally unexaggerated. Top quality and made the last 3 in the challenge.

2 Firth Birselaw Cora at Cairngold litter sister with a head which I preferred for strength of muzzle and head proportions. A real rustic look to her with lovely expression and excellent coat. I just preferred the leg length of the winner but she is a smaller bitch so just about right for balance and she should do well as should

3 Dolan Glenrood Midnight Spell

Novice Bitch (5, 1)

1 Bubb Wandris Please Yourself repeat

2 Tester Airytykes Hint of Mayhem 3 years dark brindle of good proportions with good leg length, sufficient bone. Good head proportions. Needs a little more depth of chest. Carried herself well.

2 Croquison Vlieghe Marie’s Magic Touch of Perfect 2 years 2 months wheaten, I liked enormously and had the best head of the class. Good mover. Her tailset looked low and better trimming would improve the outline.

Limit Bitch (9, 1) good class

3 Hooton Penticharm It’s My Party

MIDLAND COUNTIES – 2022

CAIRN TERRIER

MPD (4)

1 & BP Clarke & Jarvinen’s Furythor Mr Bojangles brindle which is good for size, delightful head, eyes and expression enough neck which he arches well and he has a very good spring of rib. Harshly coated he moved out with a light,positive stride.. Should finish well.

2 Jones & Arnold’s Tycadno Tom Foolery this red dog is bigger all through than I like but he is well ribbed, has a decent neck. balanced headpiece and was in super coat. Topline needs to tighten in profile action and he played his handler up a bit when moving. 3 Waugh’s Swing Dancer at Tribannon

PD (2,1)

1 Young & Lithgow’s Furythor Orion well coated, pleasing head, good tail set and carriage. Moved out steadily.

JD (4)

1 Hiam’s Carradine Arfa Pint JW won here on the quality of his head, eyes and expression. He has enough neck, very good spring and depth of rib, level backline, well set and carried tail, in excellent coat and basically sound both ways. Very well handled.

2 Keeves’ Seveek Guilded Dream this red was ample spring of rib and hampered by not being in his best jacket. Pleasing head shape, good eyes and ears, Shows good forward reach and driving hock use in profile but a bit close in hock when rear viewed.

3 Lucas & Tobtt’s Seveek Country Lad ( Lucas & Tobutt)

PGD (2,1)

1 Shannon, Storr & Middlehurst’s Brenndarcy It’s Magic (ai) what a good showman this red dog is. Nice for size, ample weight in bone, lovely arch to his neck, good backline and very good tailset and carriage. Pleasing head, eyes and expression, moved out steadily. Lovely coat which is harsh to the touch.

LD (3)

1 Munday’s Lentrica Mystic Warrior this dark brindle is a lovely size, of good make and shape and I felt he won this class on the quality of his head properties, eyes and expression. His body length/height balance is so correct and aided by the well set tail. In very good coat he moved out well and is a keen showman

2 Shopland’s. Cherrycrack Horatio this red was out of coat in comparison to the winner. He has a well balanced head with a fair breadth in skull, very good eyes and enough reach of neck. Well sprung ribs he moves OK in profile but is a bit wide in elbow when fore viewed.

3 Parker-Tucker’s Uniquecottage Grey Bor

OD (6,1)

1 CC & BOB Dennis, Waites & Goddard’s Ch Good Times Ahead with Oudenarde (Dennis), in truth I would like him smaller all over but he ticked so many other boxes. He has a beautiful head, eyes and expression aided by neat ears, ample neck with good head carriage, tight elbows with good forelegs and feet, decent spring and depth of rib, tail bang on, harsh jacket which is dense and he was the soundest dog I judged. He is especially effective in profile action.

2 & Res CC Hiam’ Carradine Podgy Paddie what a very keen showman this grey dog is. A better size for me with a lovely head carriage, good reach of neck, ample spring and depth of rib and in firm body. Not quite the ear carriage of the winner and I felt his jacket was not quite so fulsome and harsh. But he is sound, well balanced and has that look we seek in a good Cairn.

3 Firth’s Ch Cairngold Chico JW

MPB (3)

1 Furythor Marvel at Me (Munday) I just hope this engaging package grows on a bit. She ticks most of the boxes, typey, shapely, well balanced throughout and with a very pleasing head shape, well defined stop, neat ears and a non stop showgirl Moved out so steadily.

2 Dennis & Waites’ Svendalens Snow Drop this light red was not quite in the coat condition of the winner and her head lacks work for me so her expression is less varminty than that of the first. She is a better size, is well boned and bodied, moves ok in profile but pasterns need to tighten.

PB (1)

1 & BPB Bubb’s Wandris Please Yourself not the biggest but all in proportion. I liked her head and expression, especially good eyes and expression, good body length/height balance, enough reach of neck, level back which she retains on the move and she has a very good spring and depth of rib. Well coated and she moved out with a light, purposeful stride.

JB (4,1)

1 Dolan’s Glenrood Midnight Spell I thought she was the best of a not too strong class. This brindle was in lovely coat, has pleasing head properties with especially expressive eyes and well placed & used ears. Nicely ribbed she kept her backline on the move and showed a good ground cover in profile.

2 Firth’s Birselaw Cora at Cairngold another brindle, Just a bit short in length of leg for me, nicely ribbed, a decent headpiece with dark, so expressive eyes. She used her ears well but not the length of stride in profile nor tightness in front of the winner.

3 Metcalfe-Sault’s Cannwood Can’t Get Enough

PGB (2)

1 Metcalfe-Sault’s Cannwood Quiet Reflections this grey wheaten was not in full coat but she has much to like. Lovely length/height proportions, pleasing, well proportioned head with lovely expressive eyes and neat ea adding to her appeal. She is well ribbed, tail so well set and carried and her profile action was steady and balanced.

2 Keeves’. Seveek Licence to Dream this was a very mischievious red who was determined to do things her way and did nothing to help her handler. On the table she has a well balanced head with good ears and a decent stop. I would like her to be shorter in the loin and she needs some schooling to show more positive action when asked to move.

LB (5,1)

1 Inett & Harrison’s Carradine Wilma nice for size with correct length/height proportions. Level backline, decent head with very expressive eyes and a good muzzle. She uses her ears so well which enhances her appeal. In excellent coat she outmoved the rest of the class to take the red card.

2 Soper’s Elitecharm Showgirl this attentive showgirl scores in head and expression, with beautiful eyes and neat ears. She is built on good lines, just a tad overlong in loin for me. However she moved out briskly and was well coated.

3 Thompson’s Castleine Maitree

OB (8)

1st Waugh’s Ch Glory Daze at Tribannon I loved the head and expression on this young cream bitch. Just 2 years old I feel the best is yet to come as I would like her to fill her frame out a bit more. However, she is a top quality example of this lovely breed, is ulltra sound on the move, uses her neck to best advantage, lovely tail set and carriage and looks every inch a titleholder. I am sure she will win a few more tickets once she fills out that frame.

2 & Res CC Kinton’s Ch Cloverbrook Unbreakable at Woodthorpe another very worthy titleholder, this grey bitch has style and an air of being something special which she is. I liked her head and expression, super neck and outline with well muscled hindquarters a well set and carried tail.. She is so sound in action and was a very worthy runner up to the lovely cream bitch.

3 Hooton & Hughes Penticharm It’s My Party

VB (1) 1 Short’s Splinterhill’s Amazing Grace to Glenchess Imp Nl very dark grey charmer, delightful character, in super coat and condition and still moving around with a lithe, active stride. A credit in body and muscle tone. I loved her bright expression.

1ST Saich’s Lindcoly Princess Alva (NAF)

Wheaten girl with feminine head, lovely big teeth and correct bite, excellent quality double coat nice neat feet and good muscle. Moved ok when she put her mind to it, her profuse coat made it look like her topline wasn’t level,  but on examination it is.  Not using her ears and tail to her advantage in the ring, just lacking in ring experience.

Darlington Dog Show Society 16-18th September 2022

 Breed: Cairn Terrier

Judge: Dr A Firth

First of all I would like to thank the Darlington Dog Show Committee for hosting such a well organised event with as always, a pristine showground. A big thank you to all exhibitors – In these times of rising costs of fuel (and everything else frankly) showing is significantly more expensive than it once was and your support is very much appreciated. In spite of the entry being smaller than previous years I was delighted that there was not a single absentee.

 VD (1, 0 abs)

  1. Lamb & Saltmarsh’s Bireslaw Dark Charmer For Macmoon Shcm Vw –  8 years old, pleasing dark brindle with intelligent expression and expressive head. Keen showman with full complement of teeth. Good front movement, correct weight and in good coat. Best Veteran.

PD – (0)

JD – (2, 0 abs)

  1. Petts’ Doonrae Sentinel – 18 month old red brindle. The picture of a ‘typey’ Cairn Terrier just coming into his own. Correct bite with nice large teeth. Excellent flow of neck flowing into well laid  shoulders and a level topline that was maintained in the move. Perfect weight with double coat in nice condition. Not overdone. Really settled on the move in the challenge becoming very consistent. Showed all out.  Dog CC, BOB
  2. Hiam’s Carradine Arfa Pint – 12 month old dark red brindle. Typical head, correct bite. Coat coming in well. Moves well front and back. Showing well, responsive to handler.

PGD – (1, 0 abs)

  1. Dodd’s Droverlaw Follow My Shadow – 22 month old brindle  of strong stature. Correctly built and in proportion with good depth of chest. Correct dark eye with lovely expression. Moves steadily.

LD – (2, 0 abs)

  1. Hiam’s Carradine Podgy Paddie – Light grey brindle with darker points. Attractive typey specimen of correct size. Nicely pigmented eye with attractive dark points surrounding, correct deep stop and keen expression. Correct mouth. Built very nicely and not heavy at all. Flows well and excels in front movement. Nice coarse double coat on the body but could be a better texture on the legs. Res Dog CC
  2. Lamb & Saltmarsh’s Birselaw Come Dancing with MacMoon JW ShCM, ShCEx, OSW – Well built dark brindle shown in profuse double coat. Very distinctly masculine. Constructed correctly with level topline and well muscled hindquarters. Rear movement very good.

 OD – (1,0 abs)

  1. Waites, Goddard & Dennis’ Ch Good Times Ahead with Oudenarde – 3 year old dark red brindle with full double coat. Masculine head. Correct bite.  In proportion and soundly built.  In good condition. Nice outline with level topline into correct tailset. Moves soundly front and back. I suspect a little over the standard in size but not overweight and balanced.  Showed really well, good rapport with handler.

VB – (0)

PB – (0)

JB – (1, 0 abs)

  1. Felters & Rumens’ Birselaw Caol Ila at Landbuck – One of my favourites of the day. With a little more maturity will be a contender. Such a pretty, feminine, red brindle bitch. Could not really pick fault with her construction or movement. Lovely reach of neck and level topline.  Ideal size, mischievous expression and showing very well for her age. A treat to go over. Res BCC

PGB – (2, 0 abs)

  1. Harrison & Inett’s Carradine Wilma – 2 year old brindle. Nice expression with correct size shape and colour of eye. Correct bite with nice large teeth. Flows from neck into nicely laid  shoulders and good full chest. Presented well with a balanced outline. Deserving 1st.
  2. Percy’s Winetta Frankly My Dear – Pretty wheaten with darker points. Not the most pronounced stop accentuated by relatively sparse furnishings. Nicely built overall, would be much improved by being 1 or 2 lbs lighter.

LB – (2, 0 abs)

  1. Petts’ Rasken’s Joan Jet for Doonrae (Swed Imp) – Slightly reluctant light red brindle bitch. Good colour eye with good stop creating pleasant expression. Scissor bite. Nice flow with well laid back shoulders and level topline, tail not used the most positively and this could be a contributing factor to why it appeared a little low set today. Her lack of love for the experience today nonetheless didn’t take away from her overall impression.
  2. Jobling’s Ariom Full of Sass – 2 year old clear light red bitch in good coat. Keen expression which can be hard with this colouring. Correct mouth. Perfect size with nice level topline. Made and moved well in the rear.

OB (3, 0 abs)

  1. Felters & Rumen’s Ch Landbuck La Voix – 3 year old brindle with dark points. Lovely expression with correct mouth. Slightly unsettled today but this didn’t meaningfully detract from her obvious quality. Correct size and well muscled. Correctly made in nearly all aspects. A pleasure to go over. Well presented in good coat. What I loved about this girl was her back movement. The only really effortless correct rear movement today.
  2. Bateman’s Carradine Fizz Bomb – Clear red bitch with dark points to the ears. Correct eye + stop with a good bite. Profuse coat. Would prefer more length of neck.  Soundly made but not the most flawless showgirl today.
  3. Miller’s Cornton Fyne Hope

Cairn Terriers Richmond 2022

A numerically small entry but included some Cairns of very good quality. I do not judge on the Cairn who can remain in a show stance the longest, some get bored and drop tails, move them is my answer to this. Lovely to see a ring of happy Cairns moving round the ring. Coats are very short now two inches is the preferred length. Grass was a little long but ring was of a very good size. Thankyou to my two lovely stewards.

Good spring of rib.  Tail set correct and carried well.

Junior Dog 2. (A1)

Midland Cairn Terrier Club Championship Show  (2021 re-sched)

Saturday 3rd September 2022

I would like to thank the committee of the Midland Cairn Terrier Club for inviting me to judge their show. I feel it is always an honour to judge at a breed club specialist show.

I find it very sad how the numbers of Cairns are decreasing for one reason or another. My main general observations were that the general overall quality appears to be diminishing. Some were a bit too heavy which will spoil their outline with increasing age. I found a few suspect mouths and movement as always is still cause for concern. The latter not helped by the lack of depth in chest & narrow fronts.

I was pleased with my overall winners.

Lastly, Thank-you to all the exhibitors and for my experience stewards – Sharon Confue & Chris Petts.

1 Danielsson Int Ch Nord Norsk Ch Swed Fin Stubby Sox Ridhir Ro. What a fabulous dog this is. I nearly fainted when I was told he was 11 years old. This gentleman has got it all. He is of the right type; he is well constructed, and he moves with a free flowering stride. It was a pleasure to give him the CC. After I had finished my judging, I asked the handler how many CCs this dog had got. I am sure you will understand that I was surprised when I was told that this was his second and that he got his first at Crufts when he was BOB in 2014. The dog game never stops surprising me?? CC & BOS

2 Lamb, & Saltmarsh, Birselaw Dark Charmer For Macmoon Sh.CM VW. Nice dog of very good type which was in excellent condition for age.

MPD (2)

1 Waugh Swing Dancer At Tribannon, Promising youngster with a nice head which stands and moves well. 2 Asmyhr Corynthean Sunspotter At Motoppen, Nice young dog which needs to be trained.

PGD (1)

1 Parker-Tucker’s Uniquecottage Grey Borage, Another quality dog of excellent type. He has the right outline and he moved well.

LD (2)

1 Brookes’ Seevek Danish Delight at Zetamaz. This is a quality dog with a very nice head. He also has a nice neck which blends nicely into his sloping shoulders. His ribs are well sprung, and he moves well around, even if his topline could be stronger.

2 Lamb & Saltmarsh’s Birselaw Come Dancing With Macmoon OSW JW ShCEx Sh. Another dog of excellent type which was pushing hard, but I preferred the substance of the winner.

OD (4,1)

1 Parker-Tucker’s Tom Trick’s Incredibly Ilay Of Uniquecottage (Imp) This dog filled my eye and I was taken by his overall picture. He had a nice head, and he was very well constructed. He moved well when he wanted to, and I was very close to giving him the CC. The problem was that the handler never gave me the chance. Every time my decision went in his direction “Incredibly Ilay” decided to give up showing so Sox Ridhir won the match standing like a statue RCC.

2 Thomas’ Ch Tom Tricks Jocan Ty Cadno (Swed Imp). This was also an excellent dog of high class which moved well.

3 Byrne’s Carradine Howzat Howard.

MPB (2)

1 Waugh’s Dazzle Me at Tribannon. Promising puppy which needs to be trained better on the move, but she had a lovely outline.

1 Osborn & Osborn’s Tweslam Be Gin The Magic, Bitch of very good type. Nice neck and front, but topline could have been better on the move.

PGB (3)

1 Danielsson’s Tom Trick’s I Love Indeed. This handler showed some excellent dogs under me which all were similar in type, which impressed me. This bitch was also first class and she moved very well.

2 Bateman & Ravenhill’s Carradine Mon Mon Sherry. This very nice bitch tried hard. It was a close decision between these two, but I preferred the croup and the tail set on the winner.

3 Osborn & Osborn’s Tweslam Chasing Rainbows.

OB (7)

1 Goldfinch’s Tycadno Bright Star For Kanawha. This was the Cairn Queen of the WKC 2022. I loved the type of this outstanding bitch. She has a lovely head, and she is well developed in body. She moved very well, and she was superbly handled. I had no hesitation in giving her the CC and I was pleased to hear that this was her third.

2 Hooton & Hughes Penticharm It’s My Party. This bitch is almost a true copy of “Bright Star” so here was another top-quality bitch. I would, however, have liked to see her slightly better angulated behind so the was why she got the RCC.

3 Felters & Rumens Ch Landbuck La Voix.

My thanks to committee of The Midland Cairn Terrier Club for allowing me the privilege to judge this show.  My thanks also to my ring stewards, Sue and Chris, who ensured everything ran smoothly.  Quite a few of the dogs lacked muscle in the rear end otherwise some very nice exhibits on show.

VETERAN DOG/BITCH   (2,0)

Windsor Championship Dog Show  – 1st July 2022

CAIRN TERRIERS – Judge Louise Peers

Thank you to the committee for inviting me to judge at one of my favourite shows, having judged here previously when the breed had no CC’s, I found the welcome and hospitality just as warm, and the show well run. The new layout worked so well too.

Thank you to all exhibitors for giving me the honour of going over your dogs – not all my decisions will have been welcomed, but hopefully you all realise that this is the opinion of one judge, and another will see things and prioritise them differently to me. I thoroughly enjoyed my day, however have noticed a of few issues creeping in to our breed, and lack of quality in stud dogs is most worrying for our future. Having said that, I am pleased with all my main placings.

Veteran D/B (3,0 abs)

1st Lamb & Saltmarsh’s – Birselaw Dark Charmer for Macmoon Sh SM VW  –  8 year old male  Grey brindle, good head shape and nice expression, good length of neck,  leading to good lay of shoulder, giving a good straight front. Holds a level topline on the move, nicely muscled hind quarters. Won the class  on his showmanship. BV

2nd Keeves’s  Ch Seveek Hopes ‘N’ Dreams – 7 ½ year old bitch lovely head and good eye shape giving a sweet expression. Correct angulations both front and rear, moved well, Lovely harsh coat.  but just didn’t look like she wanted to be there today

3rd Paige Glenrood Trojan Prince

Puppy Dog  (1,0 abs)

1st – Hiam’s Carradine Arfa Pint –9 months old, red with dark points  head of good proportions, good stop, with broad muzzle and correct scissor bite, correct length of neck well set onto clean shoulders, correct shape of ribcage, loin and rear angulations good,  with well set on tail. If I was to be picky would like a touch more length of forearm (but not a lot), and obviously for one so young, he still needs to mature, Moved with drive and so much to like about him and his overall showmanship won him top honours today BPD, BP and later challenging to win DCC.

Junior Dog (3,1 abs)

1st – Lucas’s Seveek Country Lad – brindle  with correct skull, good stop, dark eye good  width of muzzle  and correct size and neat ears.  Nice size, with correct bone, length of neck is correct, placed onto good shoulder angulations, ribcage of correct shape, and loin ok. Movement is good, but  still needs to tighten slightly in front held a  level topline. Nice harsh coat

2nd  Waugh’s Glenrood Galaxy at Tribannon – Dark brindle, loved his head,  not as balanced as 1st – moved close in the rear.

Post Graduate Dog (3,0 abs)

1st – Parker Tucker’s  Uniquecottage Grey Borage – Wheaten with dark points, masculine head with strong jaw. A lot to like about this boy – correct  bone, nothing overdone on front or rear angulations, held a level topline and moved soundly,  showed well and at one with his handler, and stood well forward giving a lovely outline. Coat double coat.

2nd – Byrne’s Carradine Howzat Howard – Dark brindle, Nice size,  but possibly not settled in himself today. Nice head and eye, good ribcage, and length of loin, held level topline on the move, another steady mover, but preferred front movement of 1.

3rd – Morley’s Kanawha Spy Man

Limit Dog ( 4,0 abs)

1st- Parker Tucker’s  Tom Trick’s Incredibly Ilay of Uniquecottage  (IMP Swe) – Such a pleasure to go over this boy.  Masculine head, with good expression, good width of muzzle and infill under eye. Good lay of shoulder, good depth of rib, correct bone, and good feet.  Correct size all over, moved with a level topline  well set on tail and moved with rear drive. Coat of correct texture, and profuse! Just missed out on top honour but pleased to award him RCC.

2nd – Hiam’s Carradine Podgy Paddle – not as balanced as one, had a tendency to move slightly wide in front, didn’t have the bone or fore chest of 1st, also not the coat quality –  although well turned out and handled well.

3rd –  Weinberger’s Cruzo Chorister with Correnie

Open Dog (1,1 abs)

1st – Weinberger Cruzo Copper Coin for Correnie  – red Brindle,  lovely expression, good length of neck,  would like a little more lay of shoulder, level topline, and good tail set –  a little tall for me, but showed well.

Puppy Bitch (3, 0 abs)

1st – Felter’s & Rumen’s Bireslaw Caol Ila –  10month old red brindle –  feminine head still developing good stop, cheeky eye, and good dentition. Good length of neck set onto well laid shoulder . Moved with purpose, holding her topline and to finish the picture, tail well set. Nice harsh coat. Still some maturing to do, will watch with interest.

2nd – Bubb’s Wandris Please Yourself – 7 month old dark brindle , this girl has a gorgeous dark eye, and pretty feminine head. Not as balanced and I preferred the movement of 1st.

3rd – Rasse’s Show Me the Ring du cercle des enchanteurs

Junior Bitch (1, 0 abs)

1st –  Rasse’s Show Me the Ring du cercle des enchanteurs – 8 ½ month old  petite, immature pup, with harsh  wheaten coat  with dark points – eye of correct colour, and good stop. Sadly unable to assess movement on the day.

Post Graduate Bitch. (4,0 abs)

These two girls had me wanting two 1st place cards as I like them both almost equally.  On the day the movement of one just pipped 2nd to 1st place.

1st – – Inett & Harrison’s Carradine Wilma Red brindle, feminine head and loved her expression and the  width of lower jaw. Possibly best fore chest of day, and lovely balanced angulations  and bend of stifle showed in her movement, which was effortless. Good double coat.

2nd – Percy’s Winetta Frankly My Dear – love this pretty feminine girl, with cheeky expression –  a tiny  touch larger than 1st, but well within standard for size and  has just as good balance as first place. On the move was slightly narrower in the rear than 1, and didn’t flow quite so well from the side view today.  Good depth of rib, and length of loin, held a level topline and tail set good, giving a good picture on the stand.

3rd – Osborn’s Tweslam Be Gin the Magic (AI1)

Limit Bitch (8,0 abs)

1st – Thompson’s Castleline Maitree – this girl was a surprise to go over on the table – very pretty head, with good stop and correct eye.  Good length of neck, set on to shoulders with good layback – slightly smaller than most but pleasantly balanced, which showed in her movement.  Showed well to gain 1st place.

2nd – Jobling’s  Ariom Full of Sass – which she has in abundance – another feminine bitch, with correct head and stop. Pleasing eye and expression.  Neck ok, sat on good shoulders, correct rib and level topline – carrying a little weight which showed over the rear end. Rear movement was better than front.

3rd – Robinson’s Cruzo Classical Dream

Open Bitch (6,0 abs)

The first 3 in the class caused me a challenge…sadly 3rd place just didn’t shine today, but such a sound mover!

1st- Felters  & Rumens Ch Landbuck La Voix – Red Brindle beautiful feminine head, good dentition, strong lower jaw, and cheeky expression finished off with neat ears and good head furnishings Neck  set  correctly on good lay of shoulder, length of back to height good ratio, and nice length of loin. Tail set correct. Moved well with animation, caught my eye the moment she entered the ring, so pleased to be able to award her BCC and BOB.

2nd – Waugh’s Glory Daze at Tribannon – Wheaten bitch, another with feminine head. Slighter build than 1,  angulations ok and moved well. Would prefer a little less neck length.

3rd – Inett & Harrison’s Carradine Jo

THE SOUTHERN CAIRN TERRIER CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW – 3RD JUNE 2022

I would like to thank the Committee of the Southern Cairn Terrier Club for inviting me to judge their show and to the exhibitors for allowing me the pleasure of going over their dogs. The SCTC Ch Show was the first Ch Show I attended, before I started showing, so I was proud to be a judge at this Club Show. My thanks also to my multi-tasking steward, Sharon, who kept the day running smoothly.

In the exhibits I judged today, I was looking for those that met the breed standard closest and showed correct movement, both front and rear. I was pleased to see that in the challenge for both sets of CCs, all those who were placed first in their class, had shown correct movement. Many of the classes were very close in my decision making, however how good a cairn looks standing or on the table can be very different on the move. I do believe that if a cairn moves correctly this is a good indication of a well put together cairn.

MINOR PUPPY DOG (4, 0 abs)
A class of some quality puppies
1 Waugh’s Glenrood Galaxy at Tribannon. Dark brindle dog, standing well forward on forepaws. Deep in rib with strong bone. Good head with broad skull and definite stop. Large teeth with correct scissor bite. Level top line with well set on tail. In good coat. Strong muscular thighs with good bend of stifle. Moved with a free-flowing stride. Close decision but this dog moved better than 2.
2 Hiam’s Carradine Arfa Pint. Red dog who was alert and showing well. Nice head with broad skull, definite stop. Ears well carried. Scissor bite. Neck well set on. Level top line, well-sprung, deep ribs. In good coat.

Lovely expressive dark eyes. Large teeth with correct scissor bite. Well set on forequarters with good lay of shoulders. Good bend of stifle. Held his top line well on the move. A good mover who has a free-flowing stride and moved correctly both at the front and from the rear. BPD & BPIS
2 Kippen’s Chezaku Beachcomber. Wheaten bridle who didn’t show himself off to his best today. Nice head with definite stop and dark eye. Correct dentition with scissor bite. Shown in good coat, movement was good but he needed more drive to show off his qualities.

JUNIOR DOG (3,0 abs)
1 Shannon, Storr & Middlehurst’s Brenndarcy It’s Magic (AI) TAF. Red dog. He was agile and alert; showed throughout his class. Stood well forward on forepaws and made a lovely outline. Good quality head with definite stop. Ears well carried, large teeth with scissor bite. Well sprung with deep ribs. Good bend of stifle. Held his top line well on the move. Moved well driving from the rear, correct front. I seriously considered him for RDCC but his time will come.
2 Shopland’s Cherrycrack Horatio. Wheaten dog shown in good coat. Deep in rib. Good head with definite stop and dark eye. Correct dentition with scissor bite. Level top line. Well set on tail. Moved well but I preferred the movement of 1.
3 Morley’s Kanawha Spy Man

MAIDEN DOG (3, 1 abs)

Southern Counties. Cairn Terriers

This charming breed must be one of the most natural looking breeds in the terrier group, and I thought presentation today got the balance right between that natural look and not unkempt. A few very tight bites. It’s a shame the lovely BOB didn’t compete in the group. I did notice that a few exhibitors having lifted their dogs onto the table correctly then lifted them by the tail to stack them. I suspect that they were unaware that they were doing this – we just all need to be careful in this modern age with so many ready to jump on anything.

CAIRN TERRIERS

This was my first time awarding CC’s to the Cairns and I really enjoyed the assignment.

Sadly, shortly before this show the news had broken of the sad loss of Feffie Somerfield who of course had had a lifelong association with the Cairns. We held a minute’s silence in her memory ahead of the judging which was a lovely gesture.

Thank you to the exhibitors for the support and for the sporting atmosphere in the ring. I was pleased with the overall quality of the entry and enjoyed sorting them out as it gave me some food for thought.

MPD (3 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: Hiam’s Carradine Arfa Pint

Nice size puppy with a lovely outline, correct proportions for age and good tail carriage. Pleasing temperament, well presented and handled and was a good moving baby. Went on to win a well- deserved best puppy in breed.

2nd: Waugh’s Glenrood Galaxy at Tribannon

Slightly taller than the winner at this age. However presents a decent outline and will no doubt drop in body as he matures. Another good showman, good in rear, just a touch narrow in front at the moment.

3rd: Parker-Tucker’s Splinterhill’s Real Black Devil of UniquecottagePD (1 Entries) Abs: 1

JD (2 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: Shannon, Storr and Middlehurst’s Brenndarcy It’s Magic (ai)

I liked this one for type. Presented a good outline with good tail carriage. Decent front. Was a bit narrow behind and does need to settle down to the job in hand. Shows promise.

2nd: Shopland’s Cherrycrack Horatio

Decent sort although he was a bit more rangy than the winner. I think he’s probably at an awkward stage and will look better with maturity. Good bone and head developing.

YD (1 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: Thomas’s Ch Tom Tricks Jocan Ty Cadno (Swed Imp)

This one was an eye catcher and he caught my eye as soon as he came in to the ring. Stood alone but could easily have coped with some competition. Super head and expression and he’s still quite young so will mature further there I would think. Good outline and proportions and a good mover in both directions. Although still a yearling I see that he already has his title so others have awarded his qualities. I was delighted to award him the Res CC.

PGD (3 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: Mundays’ Lentrica Mystic Warrior

I thought this was a cracking dog. Lovely outline and bang on for coat and condition. Very masculine. I liked his head and I liked the fact that he stared right back at me giving the clear impression that he is active game and hardy. Was on his toes at all time presenting a super top line, decent tail carriage and correct free movement both ways. Impressed me enough to take the CC and ultimately BOB. Looked good in the group ring.

2nd: Byrne’s Carradine Howzat Howard

This one was a competitive boy. Not quite the coat or front of the winner and not quite the head but he demands a second look and has many attributes.

 LD (3 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: Parker-Tucker’s Tom Trick’s Incredibly Ilay Of Uniquecottage (Imp)

This dog is much better than he appears on first inspection. Examines well on the table. Was a little unsettled otherwise could well have been more competitive. Good outline, really good weather resistant coat and I liked his expression.

2nd: Hiam’s Carradine Podgy Paddie

A flashy one. A little lower to the ground than the winner and not as good in head or rear but plenty to like about him.

OD (2 Entries) Abs: 1
1st: Firths’ Ch Cairngold Chico JW

Good dog to go over and bang on for maturity. A lovely type. Was a bit uncooperative on the move and maybe needed a bit of competition to get him on his toes. Super coat and an attractive colour..

MPB (1 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: Saich’s Lindcoly Malificent Mo

Good size for her age. Pretty head which obviously still needs to develop. Delightful temperament and moved well in both directions.

PB (4 Entries) Abs: 2
1st: Shopland’s Tom Trick’s Little Hot Kiskadee at Cherrycrack Imp

At a real in between stage but well grown and good bone. Head developing well. Was good on the move.

2nd: Saich’s Lindcoly Phantom Menace

Litter sister of the winner of the previous class and similar comments apply in relation to size. Could do with a bit more head. Another with a delightful temperament.

JB (3 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: Goldfinch’s Kanawha Never Say Never

Nice girl, looked really good in outline on the table. Good for bone and condition and decent proportions. Could do with a little more attitude.

2nd: Saich’s Lindcoly Witches Brew (NAF)

Nicely animated. Was just a touch long. Good on the move. Coat was just about to blow.

3rd: Osborns’ Tweslam Be Gin The Magic (AI1)

YB (2 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: Waugh’s Glory Daze at Tribannon

This one was a real eye catcher with an absolutely lovely outline both standing and moving. Correct proportions and one of the best heads of the day. Coat was just coming in and she is maturing very nicely indeed. Pressed very hard for the top spots.

2nd: Saich’s Lindcoly Ocean Dream

A nice girl and assertive on the move. Could not match the winner in head or the winner’s lovely proportions.

PGB (7 Entries) Abs: 2
1st: Thompson’s Castleline Maitree

This was an interesting class to sort out. The winner won on movement and temperament as she put in a very steady performance. Would like her slightly higher on the leg but she is very typical.

2nd Mcintyres’ Cannwood Quiet Whisper

At first glance this was my winner. Good size and type and a nice head. She just needs a bit more animation.

3rd: Osborns’ Tweslam Chasing Rainbows

LB (4 Entries) Abs: 0
1st: Hooton and Hughes’ Penticharm It’s My Party

Very showy and eye-catching. Could do with just a little more length of body. Nicely headed, good animation and a good mover. Well presented and handled to make her look her best.

2nd: Keeves’ Seveek Everlasting Dream

A good type and a good size. Feminine. Was a better length than  winner. Was a bit unsettled in the ring which just pegged her.

3rd: Mcintyres’ Cannwood Celtic Charm

OB (6 Entries) Abs: 2

This was a good class to judge with quality down the line

1st: Inett, Harrison & Clayton’s The Carradine Jo

This one was beautifully proportioned, beautifully presented and has a lovely head. She is good in rear. She was handled to get the best out of her and was looking good whenever I looked in her direction. Well deserved CC and is clearly of champion quality.

2nd: Firths’ Ch Cairngold Chiquitita

Super type with a cracking head and great top line. Fully mature and in lovely coat condition. Not helping her handler as much as she could but won a well deserved Res CC in good competition.

3rd: Kinton’s Ch Cloverbrook Unbreakable At Woodthorpe.

BIRMINGHAM NATIONAL DOG SHOW 6TH MAY 2022

CAIRN TERRIERS

First of all, I would like to say that this was a bittersweet judging appointment for me, as I know how much my dear friend, Lynda Hughes, was looking forward to doing it…I’d like to thank the exhibitors for turning up and to their sporting nature, in accepting my decisions.

Although it was a numerically small entry, as sadly is the way these days, there was still plenty of quality to be found! Movement, as always, is still cause for concern, I found many too narrow in front and sometimes pinning in and many lacking drive behind. Heads on the whole were good but some were lacking width in scull and muzzle. I also found a few exhibits to be lacking the required depth of Rib.  Temperaments were all excellent and on the whole, dogs were shown in a good and clean condition and I only found a couple of suspect mouths.

SPECIAL BEGINNERS DOG – NO ENTRIES

MINOR PUPPY DOG (3)

Three very different puppies in terms of size and maturity.

1ST. Hiams, Carradine Arfa Pint, Super showy red brindle of very nice type, with correct balance which made a really nice picture when standing. He has a pleasing head and is very sound in movement with good reach in front and that desired drive from behind. I have no doubt that he has a very bright future ahead of him! BPIB and I was delighted to find out later, that he went on to win 4th in the Puppy Group. Well done!

2nd. Waugh’s, Glenrood Galaxy of Tribannon, Dark brindle who for me is up to size and not as well balanced as 1, he has a super head and expression with lovely dark eyes of correct shape, excellent topline and tailset, correctly made hindquarters that enabled him to move with drive from behind, unfortunately, he was moving a little close in front today.

3rd. Parker-tucker’s, Splinterhill’s, Real Black Devil of Uniquecottage, very much a baby but with lots to like.

PUPPY DOG (3 1abs)

Two very different types here, even though, I found out later that they were actually from the same breeder.

1st. Lucus’s, Seveek Country Lad, Wheaten Brindle, whose type appealed to me more than the second place. I liked his overall balance and shape, he has a very nice head with dark eye and well made hindquarters, that once settled, enabled him to move well behind, his front movement is a little wayward at the moment but may settle with maturity.

2nd. Keeves’s, Seveek Guilded Dream, Very showy Red  with an attractive head, he moved well behind but again, needs to settle in front.

JUNIOR DOG (1)

Shannon, Storr and Middlehurst’s, Brenndarcy It’s magic (AI) This showy Red/Wheaten creates a lovely outline when standing, he was shown in excellent coat of correct texture and is spot on for size, he has the most attractive of heads but was a little heavier in shoulder than I like and unfortunately wasn’t moving so well today.

YEARLING DOG (1)

1st. Shopland’s, Cherrycrack Horatio, Upstanding Wheaten shown in super coat and condition, he has an excellent outline with plenty of forechest and well sprung deep ribs, very pleasing head with excellent stop and dark eye, really good bone and correctly made hindquarters that gave him a lovely driving action behind, moving a little narrow in front today but seriously considered him for the RCC.

POST GRADUATE DOG – NO ENTRIES

LIMIT DOG (3)

Two very different types here and the winner is very much my type.

1st Hiam’s, Carradine Podgy Paddy, initialy this well handled Wheaten Brindle impressed me with his faultless movement, he simply glides around the ring. He has a head to die for and a super outline with good forechest and ribcage, really clean shoulders, he was a pleasure to go over and award the RCC.

2nd. Parker Tucker’s, Tom Tricks Incredibly Islay of Uniquecotage, Nicley balanced Dark Brindle with pleasing head, nice outline with a good depth of ribs and shown in excellent coat of correct texture, sound mover.

OPEN DOG (1)

1st. & CC, Dennis, Goddard and Waites’s, Good Times Ahead with Oudenarde, Some may say this Red Brindle is a little too big, but as the Late Great Walter Bradshaw said “there have always been Bigguns and Littleuns” and today I could not deny this ‘Biggun’ his day! He most impressed me with his super confirmation and precise movement, he has a very masculine head of correct proportions and was well presented and handled. Very happy to hear that this made him up. Congratulations!

VETERAN DOG (1)

1st. Lamb and saltmarsh’s, Birselaw Dark Charmer, I liked this 8 year old Grey Brindle very much, he is really nice to go over with not a bit of coarseness. He has a lovely head and expression, super straight front, clean well laid back shoulders, dead level topline and excellent hindquarters. Unfortunately not in the best of coats today.

SPECIAL BEGGINNERS BITCH (1)

1st. Metcalf-Sault’s, Cannwood Quiet Reflections, I really liked this pretty Wheaten brindle, she has excellent breed type and although up to size, is very feminine, she is well balanced with a sweet head and expression, lovely outline with a nice forechest, deep ribs and good front, well made hindquarters which enabled her to move with drive behind, well presented and handled. Was thrilled to hear that she went on to win 3rd in the SB Group.

MINOR PUPPY BITCH (3 1abs)

Two very promising puppies (litter sisters) that will no doubt change places many times in the future. They are both very well balanced and although I preferred the head of the 2nd. I just preferred the shoulder placement of 1 and felt that on the day, she out moved her sister.

1st. Felters’ and Rumens’s, Bireslaw Caol Ila. Best puppy Bitch

2nd. Firth’s, Bireslaw Cora at Cairngold.

PUPPY BITCH  (1)

1st. Metcalf-Sault’s, Cannwood Can’t Get Enough, Attractive Cream baby with pleasing outline and pretty head with nice dark eyes, she excels in forechest but has a slightly low set tail, she moved well behind with plenty of drive but a little too close in front today.

JUNIOR BITCH (2)

1st. Waugh’s, Glory Daze at Tribannon, Well balanced Wheaten brindle extravert, she has the most delightful head with a truly wicked expression, behind which lies a super outline, with well angulated hindquarters, she took a while to settle on the move, but when she did, she moved with plenty of drive behind, unfortunately she was pinning slightly in front today, nevertheless, she oozes quality.

2nd. Osborn’s Tweslam Be Gin The Magic (AI1) Feminine Red of correct size, another with a gorgeous head and expression, she is really nice to go over on the table, very good neck and shoulders with good spring of rib, on the move she has a good width behind but lacked the drive of 1 today.

YEARLING BITCH – NO ENTRIES

POST GRADUATE BITCH (3 2abs)

1st. Metcalf-Sault’s, Cannwood call Me Aggie, Cream with a lovely head and expression, very good forechest, depth of rib,  topline and hindquarters but I would prefer a little more layback of shoulder. She had free flowing movement, which was parallel front and back.

LIMIT BITCH (5 1abs)

A very nice class.

1st. Miller’s, Cornton Fyne Hope, this bitch took my eye on entering the ring (just my type) she was beautifully presented in a full double coat. She has the most stunning head and is so well constructed, which showed in her free flowing and accurate movement. But…Please Please get some weight off her, then she would get the title that she so deserves, I’m sure!!

2nd. Keeves’s, Seveek Everlasting Dream, another quality exhibit, nice sized Dark Brindle of correct balance, presenting a lovely outline, very attractive and feminine head, nice front and well angulated hindquarters, just not moving as well as 1 today.

3rd. Soper’s, Elitecharm Showgirl, a lot to like but preferred the balance of the first two.

4th. Metcalf-Sault’s, Cannwood Quiet Reflections.

OPEN BITCH (4)

What a Class! Four beautiful bitches, all worthy of their titles. I was splitting hairs between them all.

1st. Felter’s and Rumens’s, Landbuck La Voix, this Wheaten brindle has what they call ‘The X Factor’! She has the most exquisite head with a really wicked expression, she is an ideal size and is so well balanced, her construction is hard to fault but if I was to be ultra-picky, I would like a little more bend of stifle. Her movement is spot on front and rear and she moves around the ring like a little train, a joy to watch, was very pleased to award her the CC (her 3rd) and BOB. Well done!

2nd. Inett, Harrison and Clayton’s, Carradine Jo, Dark Brindle that I have admired for a while, another of correct size, she oozes breed type and is so lovely to go over on the table, really well put together throughout, she has a very feminine head of correct proportions with lovely dark eyes and is very sound in movement, a real honest Cairn who looks like she can do a good days work. Hopefully she’ll gain her so deserved title soon.

3rd. Firth’s, Cairngold Chiquitita, Another beautiful bitch that I have long admired, she is so sound and was put down to perfection.

4th. Yates-Johnson’s, Pendly Dinah, Beautifully presented stunner who unfortunately played her handler up on the move…

VETERAN BITCH – NO ENTRIES

Cairn Terriers

I was pleased to take on the entry at short notice as it has been over 4 years since I last judged the breed due to the cancelation of Crufts 2021. Firstly my best wishes for a speedy recovery to the scheduled judge Mr Paul Wilkinson. A change of judge is not a good scenario for judge or exhibitors, with an entry of 36 I was pleased that there were only 3 absentees and my thanks to those exhibitors who still attended.

My general observations are that males were quite disappointing for depth of quality, with 11 entered and only 10 present on the day we really need more quality males kept and exhibited. While there was a better depth of quality in the bitches that too is not a broad as it was 4 years ago! Cairns were scheduled on day 4 of the show so the ground was very interesting to many of the dog’s and would have been the first time many had been exhibited on grass. This did mean that quite a few were far more interested in smelling the ground than co-operating with their handlers.

VD, No entries

MPD(3,1 abs) 1. Hiams Carradine Arfa Pint, 7 month old light red brindle, very smart young dog, well made head with deep stop, broad muzzle and correct bite. Presented a balanced outline, well made front, good legs and feet, firm topline, correct tailset  and well made quarters. Well presented with a coat of correct texture. So well schooled for a puppy and was handled to make the best of his self at all times. Moved with purpose and covered the ground well on the move and at one with his handler, impressed me enough to be awarded BPIB and RCC. 2. Waughs Glenrood Galaxy at Tribannon, 7 month old grey brindle, up to size and not quite the balance of class winner. Another with a well made head with good stop, good infill under eye and correct bite. Well made in front with firm top line and good ribbing, shown in good condition and a full puppy coat. Not co-operating that well with his handler on the move as found the ground very interesting. When he settled moved well in profile but a shade close behind.

PD(1) 1. Keeves Seevek Guilded Dream, 10 month old clear red, nicely made head with broad skull, good stop and correct bite. Well made in front with good legs and feet, level top line and short hocks. A bit wayward on the move and would just like a bit more of him for a male.

JD(1) 1. Shannon, Storr & Middlehursts Brenndarcy It’s Magic, 13 month old light red, well made head, deep stop, good infill under eye, nice bite with big teeth. Nicely made throughout, firm top line well set tail and well made quarters, presented in excellent coat and condition. One who should have been considered for top honours but today he had other ideas and just would not co-operate with his handler insisting on constantly sniffing the ground and never really got into any sort of stride making it impossible to assess his movement.

YD, No entries

PGD(2) 1. Peers Tweedisle Charismatic Guy, Clear wheaten, ok in head, could do with a deeper stop, good in front, presented a balanced outline, coat of correct texture, moved steadily.  2. Binghams Carradine Bumbling Boris, wheaten with slight brindling, preferred his head and expression with deep stop and broad muzzle. Not the balance of class winner, a shade heavy which affected his movement and another who found the grass very interesting so not co-operating with his handler on the move.

LD(3) 1. Hiams Carradine Podgy Paddie, light wheaten brindle, well made head, good width with deep stop, and correct bite, well made in front, firm top line and well set tail. Good new coat coming in. Moved well in profile and covered the ground well, carrying a shade too much weight today so moving a shade wide in front. 2. Peers Tweedisle Jaunty Lad, grey brindle who presented a balanced outline in excellent coat and condition, well made head with good stop, ears a shade big, moved well in profile but a shade close behind.

OD(1) 1. Alexander’s Coharra Be More, clear red with beautiful head and expression, good width to skull and muzzle with good bite and big teeth, totally masculine in outlook. Presented in excellent coat, well ribbed, firm top line and well set tail. Well turned quarters and short hocks. Makes the best of himself and very attentive to his handler, moved out well, no hesitation in awarding him the CC and BOB.

VB(2) 1. Keeves Seevek Hopes N Dreams, 7 ½ year old dark brindle, feminine in outlook with beautiful head and expression, well made throughout with a balanced outline, coat short but of correct texture. Moved steadily and when settled covered the ground well. 2. Asmyhr’s Windlines Born To Run Wild, 9 year old clear wheaten, nicely made head with good stop and broad muzzle, shown in a full coat, carrying a bit too much weight , moved happily around the ring but not really interested in showing today.

MPB(3,1abs) 1. Felters & Rumens Birselaw Caol Ila, 8 month old red brindle bitch feminine in outlook with well made head and loved her expression, excels in front with well laid shoulder, pronounced forechest with good legs and feet. Firm top line and well set tail. More settled on the move than 2nd covering the ground well, preferred her overall balance. 2. Firth’s Birselaw Cora at Cairngold, 8 month old dark red brindle, litter sister to class winner, made in a smaller mould another with a well made head, deep stop and lovely expression. A shade heavy today and not so settled on the move as class winner.

PB(2) 1. Keeves Seveek Peaches N Dreams, 11 month old bright red so feminine in outlook and just right for size. Beautiful head with correct proportions giving a keen expression, lovely balance with good spring of rib and good angulations both ends, moved well when she settled. 2. Metcalf-Sault’s Cannwood Can’t Get Enough, 11 month old clear wheaten, made in a bigger mould than class winner, not the head or expression of 1st and stop could be deeper. Nicely made but today not making the best of herself and not interested in showing. Coat could do with some tidying as lots of old stuff there to come out.

JB(2) 1. Waugh’s Glory Daze at Tribannon, 17 month old clear wheaten lovely feminine bitch who excels in head, so well balanced with dark eye and broad muzzle, presented a balanced outline with firm top line and correct tail carriage, good rib and well made quarters. A bit unsettled on the move but when she got into her stride moved out well and covered the ground. 2. Keeves Seveek Licence To Dream, nicely made 17 month old red brindle. Still looking very raw for her age but has a well made head with a deep stop, good front and firm top line and another one with a good coat of correct texture, just needs to settle on the move.

YB, no entries

PGB(5) 1. Shannon & Storrs Doonrae Rebel Rebel  Among Brenndarcy, red brindle who lives up to her name. Well made throughout with a beautiful head, deep stop and intense expression, excellent front with good forechest, well ribbed, firm top line and shown in excellent coat and condition. But would she settle and move, would she heck! A bitch who should be doing so much more if she just settled and co-operated with her handler. 2. Peers Tweedisle Enchanted Lady, clear red made in a smaller mould, loved her head and expression so feminine in outlook, well balanced and good ribs, firm top line and nice short tail, shown in a full coat of correct texture. Moved and showed steadily. 3. Metcalf-Sault’s Cannwood Call Me Aggie.

LB(6) 1. Hooton & Hughes Penticharm It’s My Party, feminine light grey brindle, well made head with good stop and infill under the eye. Well made in front with good forechest, firm top line and well set tail. Shown in good coat and condition, not the easiest bitch to show but her handler always gets the best out of her, in contention for top honours. 2. Sopers Elitecharm Showgirl, light wheaten brindle, truly feminine with a lovely head with width and good infill under the eye. Well made in front with firm top line and good quarters, good new coat coming in. Not quite the balance of class winner. 3. Ballingers Cloverbrook Maid For Gold.

OB(4) 1. Firths Cairngold Chiquitita, eye-catching,  feminine clear red, lovely balanced outline, well made head and keen expression, so well made in front with good angulations and pronounced forechest, firm top line and well muscled quarters. Presented in excellent coat and condition, moved well and so attentive to her handler, could not deny her the CC & BOS. 2. Felters & Rumens Landbuck La Voix, totally feminine wheaten brindle, loved her head and expression, well made throughout and presented a balanced outline, excellent quarters. An exuberant showgirl who took a while to settle but moves well once she does, well deserved the RCC. 3. Inett,Harrison & Claytons Carradine Jo.

SBB(2) 1. Metcalf-Sault’s Carradine Quiet Reflections, up to size wheaten brindle, ok in head with good bite and big teeth. Well ribbed with a good new coat coming in, carrying a bit too much weight which affected her front movement. 2. Asmhyr’s Motoppen Pinot Noir, nicely made wheaten brindle, well made head with good proportions. Carrying too much weight today and not interested in showing.

National Terrier Club Championship Show 2nd April 2022

Cairn Terriers

Firstly I would like to thank the committee of this club for inviting me to judge Cairns at one of my favourite shows. Also thank you to all the exhibitors who brought their dogs for me to judge, I had a most enjoyable day, some dogs I have admired from ringside didn’t get top honours today simply because of the quality of the entry. I genuinely felt I needed more first prizes, so that is very encouraging for the future of our breed. On the downside, there is more quality and quantity in the bitch classes, which is worrying for stud dogs in the future. On the whole movement was good, a handful had narrow fronts, I saw a couple of suspect mouths but they were in the minority.

Spec Beginners D/B – 3 entries.

1st Lund’s Lentrica Hocus Pocus by Jorvikairn

Wheaten brindle bitch, strong head, good stop, large teeth, neck flowing into shoulder, good topline and tail set, held on the move. Double coat of correct texture, attentive to handler at all times. Moved well, covering the ground & striding out. Could be a bit more feminine.

Cream bitch, different type to first, feminine head, bit short of furnishings at present, dark eye, good stop, large teeth. Good topline and tail set on, lost interest at times so dropped her tail, moves very well from rear but pinning a bit at the front, this might tighten up with maturity. This bitch is very well constructed, with level topline, well set on tail, good shoulder placement and good bend of stifle, allowing her to move freely and with drive. She shows well, to be hyper critical she could be a bit more animated, with more sparkle she would have been in contention for top honours, but no denying she is a quality bitch.

2nd Jobling’s Ariom Full of Sass

Red bitch, another with a stunning feminine head, with neat ears, good stop, large teeth, good forechest and neck flowing in shoulders, level topline and well set on tail. Neat feet, good spring of rib and well muscled quarters, moving with drive. She flowed around the ring and moved well when viewed from the front and the rear. Profuse coat on her front legs made her look a bit out at elbows but she certainly isn’t. two very promising bitches.

Cairn Terrier Club Championship Show 2021

It is approaching 41 years this easter that I attended my first dog show, The Cairn terrier club open show at Clarkston public halls in Glasgow. Never in my wildest dreams did I think one day I would stand in the middle of the ring and have the opportunity to judge my fellow peers’ exhibits. For me there is no greater honour than judging a club show but the parent club appointment is the ultimate and I thank the committee for this opportunity.

It is 3 years since my last appointment and I think it is safe to say all exhibits were new to me.

My main observations from the day were some heads lacked a good stop and a few had longer muzzles than I like, I found no incorrect mouths. Movement as always could have been better and a few did have very long hocks, coats were on the whole good and none were over presented, A few could improve with some ringcraft but covid had a part to play here. And others were a bit heavy and this didn’t help their chances I was  very pleased with the excellent temperaments on show and I enjoyed working through the entry and thank all those who made the long journey.

Class 1: Special Veteran dog or bitch (2 1abs)

Judge: Iain Shaw

Critique, Cairn Terrier Club Ch. Show 27th March 2022.

I would like to thank The Cairn Terrier Club Committee for inviting me to judge their 2022 Ch. Show. I have not judged the breed for 2 years due to the Covid 19 upsetting the show scene, so the majority of the dogs were new to me and many were shown for the first time. I was pleased with the quality of my entry and thank those exhibitors for travelling a long way to support me. The majority of those present did justice to the quality in the breed, but of course, there were a few who carried faults which I did not find to be profuse. Today’s Cairns are shorter in back and higher on the leg when compared with yesteryears models and they now exhibit a pitter-patter movement around the ring with a shorter stride. However, I do not consider this a fault as they still move smoothly with drive. Coats are much more highly trimmed these days. I enjoyed my day and thank everyone for providing me with this great opportunity. I only wish I had had more top prizes to hand out.

Critique. Southern CTC Ch Show 6th February 2022

I would like to thank the committee of the Southern Cairn Terrier Club for inviting me to judge their show, also the hospitality shown. My stewards Sharon and Vanessa kept things running smoothly. Due to a covid appointment cancellation I hadn’t judged for a while so all were new dogs to me. I was thrilled with my entry and had lots of Cairns to go over. On the whole I was pleased with the quality, some coats could have been coarser. I only came across a couple of wayward mouths, stops were good as were forechests. A few years ago I was worried about our breed getting too big, but most of my entry were what I consider okay. I would always veer to smaller rather than larger, especially in bitches. Some younger males seemed up on leg, which can spoil the outline and balance of a Cairn, but hopefully they will mature and achieve that correct balance in time. As other judges have recently pointed out there is far more quality in bitches at the moment. Such a shame more boys aren’t kept and run on for the show ring.
