CRUFTS

8TH March 2020

Cairn Terriers

It was a great honour to judge our lovely breed at this year’s Crufts. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience which was much more physically, mentally and emotionally draining than I could imagine. Thank you to my Steward, Wendy Bray who, despite being alone, kept the proceedings running smoothly, ensuring that we completed the judging in good time.

Special thanks must go to the exhibitors who came from far and wide. The atmosphere at Crufts is significantly different from other shows. It is hotter, noisier and busier which can have an effect on the dogs.

I found more variation than I would have expected, especially in coats and presentation. Some, for me, were over trimmed making them look sculptured.  Others were cobbier with short backs and vertical tails carried like flag poles making them appear unbalanced.  Movement, as ever, was variable.

On a positive note many had lovely heads with that desirable expression.

Veteran Dog (4, 1 abs)

1 Courant FRA/MON/INT/ESPA/LUX/SM CH UNIQUECOTTAGE TAGGART. BVIB Eight years plus – a lovely balanced wheaten with good head, dark eye, shoulders, construction and condition. Moved effortlessly around the ring with drive.

2 Thomas CH/IR CH TYCADNO I SPY. An old favourite of mine. Seven and a half years, balanced, dark brindle, good head, stop, eye, teeth. Moved well and enjoying his day out.

3 Lamb & Saltmarsh RENSHAW THERE AND BACK AGAIN UNDER MACMOON. Nine and a half years. Dark brindle. Nice head, good ear placement, body in good condition.

Minor Puppy Dog (1, 0)

1 Dennis & Waites GOOD TIMES AHEAD. Red brindle. Liked his head, eye, stop level topline, coat.  A little unruly on the table.  Moved out with drive. BPD.

Puppy Dog (No entries)

Junior Dog (4, 1)

1 Peers and Peers TWEEDISLE JAUNTY LAD. Wheaten, nearly 18 months. Good head, keen expression, ear placement, stop, lovely dark eye, teeth, proper bite. Held his topline on the move.

2 Inett & Harrison CARRADINE IN’N OUT MR SPROUT. Dark brindle, 14 months, nicely bodied, head ok but didn’t always use ears. Needs time to mature.

3 Williams GLENCHESS HIGH FIDELITY FOR SARSEN. Dark red brindle, nearly 18 months, well constructed, balanced, pleasing head, expression, bite, coat.

Yearling Dog (2, 0)

1 Petts DOONRAE QUIET STORM. Lovely masculine, balanced dog. Quality coat coming through. Good bone, muscled quarters providing the necessary rear drive. Keen expression, dark eye, proper bite. Moved very well and retained topline. Still maturing.

2 Inett CARRADINE KENDA KAIRN. Red brindle. Liked the head, bite, expression, coat, level topline. Moved well. Although balanced , I would prefer more substance all round.

Post Graduate Dog (4, 1)

1 Saich STOUTHEART EINSTEIN FOR LINDCOLY. Liked the head, correct eyes, expression, coat, teeth, bite, shoulders. Level topline.

2 Paige GLENROOD TROJAN PRINCE. Dark red brindle, balanced, seven years old with good teeth and bite. Coat OK.  Moved steadily.

3 Bateman CARRADINE WHISKEY MAC. Light red/wheaten. Nice head and body. Seemed unhappy with surroundings. Moved ok but today, lacked dynamism. Shame.

Limit Dog (7, 0)

1 Harrison CARRADINE WHISKEY OSCAR. Grey/brindle. Balanced, typical, keen expression, liked the head, good eye (shape and colour) neat ears correctly set, well presented, coat of good quality.  Strode around the ring with purpose and drive. RCC

2 Parker-Tucker TOM TRICK’S INCREDIBLY ILAY OF UNIQUECOTTAGE.  Balanced, well coated, with a good head, eye, reach of neck, shoulders, bone. Handled well on the table but somewhat lethargic on the move today.

3 Day TREKHILLI PEPPERAZZI. Very dark.  Full coated, good head, eye, stop, level topline. Another who handled well on the table but lacked oomph on the move.

Open Dog (13, 3)

A very good class with quality in depth.

1 Clarke & Jarvinen MULTI CH CAIRNSTERS MR DON JUAN. Balanced, dark grey brindle, good head, lovely eye, ear placement, alert, enough neck flowing into well placed shoulders, level topline, just about enough harsh coat. Handler paced this dog at just the right speed to show off his qualities. CC

2 Theodorsson SEUCH/NOUCH/FINUCH HJOHOO’S HJOTAKE WHAT HJO WANT. Similar to the winner; a good mouth, bite, eye, appealing expression, harsh coat. Shown with confidence by handler and moved effortlessly around the ring.

3 Firths CH CAIRNGOLD CHICO JW. Lovely, balanced, well presented,  light red, in proper full coat. Good head, eye, stop, ear placement. Moved soundly and with drive.

Good Citizen Dog (4, 1)

1 Day TRIBANNON CHOCOLATE CHIP. Liked the head, eye, expression, coat, shoulders, level topline, spot on tail set.

2 Lamb & Saltmarsh BIRSELAW DARK CHARMER FOR MACMOON SHCM. Smaller than winner, pleasing head and expression in good coat not. Moved OK.

3 RENSHAW THERE AND BACK AGAIN UNDER MACMOON. 3rd in Veteran.

Veteran Bitch (10, 1)

Some very nice Cairns went unplaced in this class.

1 Jarvinen DKCH/DE/INT/SE/CZ/LU/BE CH CAIRNSTERS DALLAS EUW14. Lovely, balanced 10 years old in good coat, head with desired stop, keen but kindly expression and level topline. She moved well; credit to her owner,

2 Inett CH CARRADINE COME ON IRENE. Nearly 11 years old in good order and not showing her age. Loved the head and expression. Moved well and managed to retain her topline.

3 Petts CH DOONRAE LEXICON OF LOVE. Just over 8 years old of lovely type, moved well when settled. Coat of correct texture and quality.

Minor Puppy Bitch (2, 0)

Unfortunately both exhibits were unsettled and seemed overawed by the atmosphere and the general hubbub.

1 Saich LINCOLY OH NO IT’S TROUBLE NAF.  Eight months old, head still developing. Coat ok for age.  Moved well enough.  Still very much a baby.

2 Miller CORNTON FYNE HOPE. Similar age to first and also needs time to grow on and develop.  Wayward movement let her down today.

Puppy Bitch (4, 1)

Bubb HJOHOO’S HOW EASY HJO PLEASE ME (IMP SWE). 10 month old dark brindle.  Head ok, good teeth and bite. Well coated, moved steadily and kept  topline level.

2 Clarke CAIRNGOLD CHAKIRA BY LENTRICA. 12 month, balanced, pretty feminine wheaten puppy who needs time to body up and mature. Handled well on the table and has a pleasing head and expression. Her front movement let her down today.

3 LINDCOLY OH NO IT’S TROUBLE NAF. 1st Minor Puppy

Junior Bitch (5, 1)

1 Firths CAIRNGOLD CHIQUITITA.  Very smart red youngster and litter sister to 2nd in Puppy Class. Growing on and maturing nicely.  Liked her head, expression, coat quality. Gave her handler something of a difficult time initially but moved well when settled. One to watch. BPB, BPIB.

2 Hogarty ROTTRIVER’S MOET CHANDON. Another smart and appealing type, Balanced, good neck, shoulders, coat, topline.  Moved well.

3 Osborns TWESLAM CHASING RAINBOWS. Dark brindle, nearly out of junior but still some growing to do. Nice and steady on the move.

Yearling Bitch (11, 4)

1 Hogarty CADAGIO LETS GET THE PARTY STARTED. Red brindle with kerb appeal. Balanced, good head, eye, expression, ear set, big teeth and proper scissor bite. Enough neck, quality coarse coat, spot on tail set, not overtrimmed. Sound movement. Will watch with interest.

2 Inett, Harrison & Clayton CARRADINE JO. Balanced, liked her head, neck, shoulders, front assembly, topline. Moved well.

3 Saich’s LINDCOLY SINGING ANGEL. Heavier built than 1 and 2 but not the outline.  Moved ok.

Post Graduate Bitch (13, 2)

1 Lunds CAIRNGOLD BRANDY SNAP BY JORVIKAIRN. Red/wheaten  in good coat and overall condition. Liked her head, eye, keen expression, teeth, bite and her neck flowing into good shoulders. Correct tail set and topline retained on the move. Just wish she demonstrated more “up and at ‘em attitude”.

2 Inett’s, Harrison & Clayton CARRADINE WINNIE. Light red, head ok, correct teeth/bite but not quite the expression of winner.  Moved ok but lost her topline.

3 Bateman CARRADINE FIZZ BOMB. A nice type, balanced, good eye, keen expression, moved ok but lacked enthusiasm. Will have better days.

Limit Bitch (10, 1)

1 Thomas TYCADNO YOURS TRULY. Balanced red/brindle with a lovely head, eye, stop, ear placement, expression. Well presented, harsh outer coat of correct length, level topline, good bend of stifle. Stood well showing and moved with drive and purpose. Real contender for the green cards.

2 Smith CANNWOOD MISTY DAWN AT GETHLEE. Cream with pretty head, pointed, well set ears and dark points. Correct coat for length and texture. Spirit level topline, correct tailset, moved effortlessly. Showy.

3 Le Courtois & King NOOMI ROSE GLEN BRULLEMAIL. Stylish, keen expression, alert but less extrovert than 1 and 2.

Open Bitch (8, 2)

1 Catto BIRSELAW VIKING PRINCESS.  A wonderful, balanced, alert, grey/brindle Shown free standing to demonstrate her qualities. Typical head, eye, expression. Strong jaw, big teeth, scissor bite. Good reach of neck flowing into sloping shoulders.   Level topline.  Correct tail set with tail at the correct angle. Quality coat of correct length and texture.  Nothing exaggerated. Moved true and with purpose up and down and across the ring. CC, BOB.

2 Theodorsson CIB/SEUCH/FINCH/DKUCH HJOHOO’S HJO’RE MY LOVEY DOVEY EUJW*16/WW*17.  Different type to the winner. Handled well on the table but coat a little short for me. Good head, eye, stop, ear placement, teeth, bite. Level topline.  Moved with drive.  Very showy.  RCC.

3 Smook-Van Koolbergen NL/LUX CH CHIRAZ CLOUD OF JOY. Another quality  Cairn with a beautiful head and expression. Well presented.  Good mover fore and aft.

1 CAIRNGOLD BRANDY SNAP AT JORVIKAIRN. 1ST Post Grad

2 Morley’s CANNWOOD HERE’S HETTY. Nearly 7 years old red/brindle. Pleasing head, steady mover, enjoying her day out.

SOUTHERN CAIRN TERRIER 81ST CHAMPIONSHIP

SHOW HELD ON 2ND FEBRUARY 2020

AT BRACKNELL SPORTS & LEISURE CENTRE

I felt very honoured to be asked to judge this club show and what a lovely happy atmosphere prevailed.   I was very pleased with the general type of dogs that I had the pleasure to go over I wished I had more firsts to give out.  One thing which concerns me is the shape of the eye – in our standard we do not have definition of their shape  only their size– for me I was surprised to see large round and quite prominent eyes and colours ranging from black to very light hazel.  This spoils their wicked expression. Huge thanks to my three wonderful stewards.
