Critiques 2021

CAIRN TERRIER

MPD (1) 1. Shannon, Storr & Middlehurst’s Brendarcy It’s Magic. Almost 9 mths and maturing well, needs to fill out in head a little more, full coat still to come through, moved true. Best Puppy.

JD (1) 1. Thomas’ Tom Tricks Jocan Ty Cadno. No tricks needed to demonstrate quality of this young dog, excelled in coat but this did not distract from natural and balanced appearance, sound movement. Dog CC and another gaining his crown today and topped with BOB.

PGD (2) 1. Byrne’s Carradine Howzat Howard. Lacking coat and furnishings to complete the picture today, won class on better movement.

  1. Bingham’s Carradine Bumbling Boris. Outgoing sort and of sound type, but not as positive on the move as 1.

LD (3) 1. Hiam’s Carradine Podgy Paddie. Another who would benefit from more coat, nice overall shape and proportions, moved free and with ease.

  1. Brookes’ Seveek DanishDeligfhtat Zetamaz. Appealing type, solidly built but carrying too much weight today, coat in very good order.
  2. Dennis, Goddard & Waites’ Good Times Ahead withOudenarde.

OD (3.1) 1. Felters & Rumens’ Landbuck Kingsman. Lots of breed virtues to admire and not surprised to learn he has already won his title, well proportioned, liked neck and shoulders, moved OK. Res DCC.

  1. Saich’sStoutheart Einstein for Lindcoly. Nice type but let down when moving.

VD (1) 1. Saich’s Lindcoly Howling Mad Murdoc. 7 yrs and showing no signs of age, strong head without coarseness, good double weather resistant coat, when settled moved ok. BV.

MPB (4) 1. Keeves’ Seveek Peaches N Dreams. A little playful and uncooperative and very alert and aware of all around her, saw sufficient positive points to make assessment of her virtues, but a bit more practice and training will improve her performance.

  1. Saich’sLindcoly Witches Brew. Longer cast than 1, and coat in between.
  2. Saich’sLindcoly Put a Ring on it.

PB (1) 1. Saich’s Lindcoly Miss Custard. Standing a little narrow in front which detracted from appearance, body maturing well, good coat for age.

JB (1) 1. Saich’s Lindcoly Ocean Dream. Good overall body proportions but would prefer a little more strength in muzzle to balance the picture, good body with well set and well carried tail, would like a little more animation on the move.

PGB (6.1) 1. Soper’s Elitecharm Showgirl. Given more time she may well live up to her name, good natural look, liked head and expression and moved soundly as one would expect from one that is made correct.

  1. Saich’sLincoldy Golden Mercedes.Larger type than 1and not as positive in outline, sound on the move.
  2. Hiam’sCarradine Dottie.

LB (5) 1. Ballinger’s Cloverbrook Maid for Gold. Appealing type and did not disappoint as I went over her, liked overall balance, moved true and with confidence. Res BCC.

  2. Felters & Rumens’ Landbuck LaVoix.

OB (4.1) 1. Kinton’s Ch Cloverbrook Unbreakable at Woodthorpe. Very pleasing type, attentive and alert, well made head, correct bite, good expression, well made body, level topline with well set tail, strong hindquarters, moved well. Bitch CC.

  1. Inett & Harrison’s Carradine Jo. Good honest type but preferred qualities of 1 more.
  2. Goldfinch’sTycadnoBright Star for Kanawha.

VB (1) 1. Asmyhr’s Windline Born to Run Wild. Held shape together well on the move, but a little out at elbows, very good coat.

Midland Cairn Terrier Club Saturday 4 December 2021

My thanks to Linda Firth & the committee for inviting me to judge their Championship show and also to my most helpful stewards, Phillip Horspool & Chris Petts.

I was very pleased with my top winners.  There were many coats on the blow and I noticed that some exhibitors remove too much hair from their dogs’ legs.

On the whole it was a good entry with some lovely Cairns to go over.

Cairn Terrier Association Breed Championship Show

Saturday 20 November 2021

I thoroughly enjoyed my day judging and thank the CTA for the invitation. Thanks also to my steward Sharon Confue who kept the day running smoothly and to the exhibitors for their entries, particularly during these challenging times.  I was delighted with my entry overall but noted a number who moved close at the rear and a few long in foreface which detracts from the true cairn expression.  Presentation on the whole was good, but coats were at varying stages.

South Wales & W.O.E CTC Breed Championship Show, Saturday, October 16, 2021

I was both humbled and elated by the invite to judge Cairns in the UK at a Breed Championship show.  After Covid restrictions, it was like a mirage to see so many excited dogs and eager exhibitors back in the ring.  I must comment on how wonderfully private and functional this show location was.  We all must give kudos to the club for finding such a hidden gem.  I also must thank my incredible and efficient stewards for keeping me on time and on point with the Kennel Cub judging procedures.  They were the very best!

As in many other countries, bitches are usually stronger than dogs, most likely because that is what breeders are willing to keep in numbers and, in fact, at this show there were many more bitches entered than dogs.

One can see that the Scandinavian dogs have influenced the breed in the UK as well as in the states, however, I am happy to report that the whispers and rumors on the internet of 16-inch (40 cm) Cairns across the pond were completely unfounded.  For the most part, the dogs shown fall within reasonable size and shape.  Of course, there will always be variance in size, which is the case everywhere in the world, but I am of the belief that larger and smaller dogs have always existed and that they both can be valuable to a breeding program.  I am also happy to report that presentation here was not overdone as it is in some parts of the world.   Some dogs, however, were lacking in coat condition.  I was mentored to appreciate dogs being shown in good length of coat which should be hand trimmed regularly and presented in layered condition.  Coat conditioning gives both the functional and finished look we all admire when we spy Cairns from afar and even more so up-close when we hold them near.  I was also encouraged that hindquarters here were generally not as close as in the states and in Scandinavia.

My general comments and impressions of the top placed dogs in each class are below.

Veteran Dog or Bitch—(6) 1 Absent

1 Dolan’s CH Glenrood Scheherazade—A lovely balanced wheaten bitch with stunning head that oozes femininity.  She’s excited to be at the show!  She’s agile but with good bone and substance, lithe, and carries a very lovely coat and beautiful correct topline and has a very nice neck and shoulder.

2 Inett & Harrison’s Ch Carradine George Flies with Harkinleigh JW—Lovely size dark male with good construction.  He’s alert and interested in his surroundings and moves efficiently and shows well for his handler.  He is of a lovely type that screams Cairn, but he’s entered against a bitch that steals the class on her poise and presence.

3 Asmyhr’s Windlines Born to Run Wild

Minor Puppy Dog—(2) 0 Absent

1 Shannon, Storr, & Middlehurst’s Brenndarcy It’s Magic Ai—This is a real cracker of a puppy who stacks and shows extremely well for such a youngster.  He carries a lovely correct outline and moves well around the ring with a very sound and efficient forequarters.  Lovely head and overall very promising puppy.

2 Shopland’s Cherrycrack Horatio Naf–Just six months and whistle on this day, this wheaten puppy has lovely bone and substance and very appealing expression.  He needs to get acclimated to the ring and that will come with maturity.  He moves with very nice reach and drive and I see a very bright future for him.  The other puppy was more polished and poised on this day, but I suspect that they these 2 will have many fun times in the ring in the future!

Junior Dog—(1) 0 Absent

1 Thomas’ Tom Trick’s Jocan Ty Cadno—Junior wheaten male with an unforgettable head and expression.  Beautifully balanced, with a correct topline, alert and wagging tail.  He sports a punishing strong muzzle that filled my hand with a correct bite filled with large teeth.  Correct width in his hindquarters going away from the judge which is a virtue to be appreciated today.  Shows himself proudly with no handler fussing needed.   (CC & BOS)

Novice Dog—(3) 2 Absent

1 Hiam’s Carradine Podgy Paddie Taf—In his underwear today, short of coat and conditioning on his furnishings, this dog should and will be appreciated for his effortless reach and drive around the ring.  He is alert and inquisitive, with a pleasing head and coveted dark points.  When he is in a more mature and competitive coat, I can see him making his championship.

Graduate Dog—(4) 1 Absent

1 Byrne’s Carradine Howzat Howard—Well balanced with a good outline and tail on top as it should be.  Good head and expression.   Moves with animation however a little over-excited on this day.   More furnishings on the head and legs and body coat would complete the picture.

2 Peers’ Tweedisle Charismatic Guy—Wheaten with dark points moving soundly coming and going.  Good topline and tail but he is a little thin on this day.  Just needs a little more experience and a confidence to move into the next phase of competition.

3 Saich’s Lindcoly Marvelous Trevour

Post Graduate Dog—(4) 1 Absent

1 Hogarty’s Cadagio’s Super Trouper—Red brindle who is up to size with a lovely head and expression, correct bite with big teeth.  Moves with reach and drive and can clearly get where he wants to go in record time.  Showing his socks off today.

2 Peers’ Tweedisle Jaunty Lad—True to his name he is one jaunty chap not always moving in step with his handler.  Otherwise, sound moving and balanced with pleasing outline, good topline and tail.  He would benefit with bit longer and conditioned coat.

3 Keeves’ Seveek Carry on the Dream

Limit Dog—(5) 2 Absent

1 Dennis, Waites and Goddard’s Good Times Ahead with Oudenarde—Striking balanced red brindle dog who shows himself off well.  He also is very balanced in his movement.  Masculine and pleasing head and expression.  Appreciated his coat condition and his head and leg furnishings.  Tail always wagging happily.

2 Inett & Harrison’s Carradine In N’ Out Mr Sprout—Dark brindle moving quite fleetly from the side.  Good level back with good forechest.  Typey head and expression with excellent bite.

3 Saich’s Stoutheart Einstein for Lindcoly

Open Dog—(4) 1 Absent

1 Firth’s Ch Cairngold Chico JW—Moderate and self-assured red with a magnificent coat.  Excellent topline and tailset sporting the perfect carrot tail.  In good weight and good muscle.  Moves quite soundly and is poised and commands attention.  He has the show qualities and ring presence that one cannot teach.  (Reserve CC)

2 Felters and Rumens’ Landbuck Kingsman—Eye catching dark dog with gorgeous head and expression and makes quite a picture in outline.  Lovely neck and shoulder.  Quite different than the dog placed before him but just as useful for a breeding program.  Did not always cooperate on the move today but makes a positive impression.

3 Saich’s Lindcoly Holwing Mad Murdoc

Special Beginners Dog—(1) 0 Absent

1 Hiam’s Carradine Podgy Paddie Taf (see Novice Dog)

Minor Puppy Bitch—(5) 1 Absent

1 Bubb’s Wandris Strike a Light—Silver brindle bitch that floats around the ring with ease—her side gait is really something to behold.  Right now up on leg more than the others in her class.  She will need time to develop and mature, especially in head.  Shows much promise.

2 Saich’s Lindcoly Put a Ring on It Naf—Clearly one of her first times out and about, she showed with cautious glee.  Looking good coming and going and carrying her topline and tail when it’s important.

3 Inett & Harrison’s Carradine Minnie Maisie

Puppy Bitch—(3) 0 Absent

1 Waugh’s Glory Daze at Tribannon—Not a small puppy but a cream bitch with a head to die for.  The kind of “cat” head the old timers talked about.  Naughty as they come, however, when she uses herself correctly, she is a vision.  Outline is all there, moves well and has presence.  With maturity a bright future awaits her for sure.

2 Goldfinch’s Kanawha Never Say Never—Cream bitch of good proportions and balance giving her handler all she could handle today and made it hard to assess movement.  Lovely head and expression.

3 Saich’s Lindcoly Turning Back time

Junior Bitch—(7) 0 Absent

1 Hogarty’s Cadagio Your One of Us—Smart classy youngster that is constructed right and does everything well for one so young.  Excellent topline and tailset, typey dark head, I think enough bone and substance for her age.  The one to watch for the future CCs.

2 Lund’s Lentrica Hocus Pocus by Jorvikairn—Red brindle in perfect body coat condition, needs leg furnishings to complete the package.  Good bone and substance, pleasing head and expression, moves especially well from the side but is not cooperating perfectly on the move today.

3 Inett & Harrison’s Carradine Wilma

Novice Bitch—(7) 3 Absent

1 Inett & Harrison’s Carradine Mary—Typey dark bitch that screams Cairn.  Alert expression, excellent topline and moved well in all directions.

2 Metcalf-Sault’s Cannwood Quiet Reflections—Wheaten silver brindle with dark points of very similar type to the first except with a tad more bone and substance.  Very competitive in this class and moved and showed well.

3 Saich’s Lindcoly Know Who You Are

Graduate Bitch—(9) 4 Absent

1 Thompson’s Castleline Maitree—Wheaten bitch with pleasing proportions and freedom of movement.  Good bone and substance with good forechest with good substance.  Went around the ring in a carefree manner showing off her many positive attributes.  A slight variation in grooming and presentation could surely ascend her to winning CCs

2 Bubb’s Lindcoly Strike a Pose—Wheaten bitch with dark points, lovely head and expression.   Presented in correct coat length with proper furnishings.  The best of fronts.  Hesitated on the move occasionally which may have hurt her on this day.

3 Shannon & Storr’s Doonrae Rebel Rebel Among Brenndarcy

Post Graduate Bitch—(10) 5 Absent

1 Felters & Rumens’ Landbuck La Voix—This precocious bitch is special, and she knows it!  If you are patient, she may even show you her lovely head and expression punctuated by small correct ears and a black mask face, the mask being rare and coveted in our breed.  She moves with good reach and drive and is all Cairn in attitude, playfulness, inquisitiveness and naughtiness.  She is the handful that one would love to have. (Reserve CC & Reserve BIS)

2 Hogarty’s Rottriver’s Moet Chandon—Dark statuesque bitch that stacks with the best of them.  Lovely outline punctuated by an excellent topline and tail set.  Good bone and substance.  I think a great asset to a breeding program.  Would not behave on the move today.

3 Dolan’s Glenrood Dance Til Dusk

Limit Bitch–(9) 3 Absent

Quite a difficult class to judge and on another day the placements could easily be different.

1 Firth’s Cairngold Chiquitita—Stunning red reminiscent of her sire shown earlier in the day.  She has a lovely head, clean neck and shoulder, perfect topline and tailset.  She’s very feminine and carries herself with poise.  Amazing consistency and quality that we strive for from this kennel.

2 Hooton & Hughes’ Penticharm It’s My Party—A workman type Cairn who is sound and moves with precision and efficiency and quite freely around the ring.  Good coat, head, and balance.  She is very responsive to her handler and will be a real threat as soon as realizes how pretty she is!

3 Inett, Harrison, & Clayton’s Carradine Jo

Open Bitch—(10) 1 Absent

1 Hogarty’s IR CH Cadagio Let’s Get the Party Started—It may be her party that she is starting, but I was celebrating as well with the opportunity to go over this stunning bitch.  She has a typey and attractive head with lovely ears and an appealing keen dark eye.  She’s balanced in outline and sports a perfect double coat of good length and texture.  She moves swiftly and stylishly across the ring without wasting effort.  No matter how many times I tried to catch her she just never puts a foot in the wrong place.  I’m convinced that she would win anywhere in the world.  (CC & BOB/BIS)

2 Kinton’s Ch Cloverbrook Unbreakable at Woodthorpe—What a showy, solid, well-constructed bitch with typey head.  Topline is level and tailset is a picture.  She stands and moves with confidence and poise and is hard to miss in any lineup.

3 Dolan’s Whispers at Dawn at Glenrood JW

I regret not being able to place more of the quality bitches in this fabulous and competitive Open class.

Special Beginners Bitch—(3) 0 Absent

1 Hiam’s Carradine Dottie—Dark brindle bitch who is alert and eyes always on her handler.  She moves with good reach and drive around the ring.  Excellent muzzle and strong bite with large teeth.  She needs time to mature and the confidence to show herself better on the ground and free stack.

2 Metcalf-Sault’s Cannwood Quiet Reflections (see Novice Bitch)

3 Asmyhr’s Motoppen’s Pinot Noir

Thank you all for this great honor.  I am still pinching myself to be sure it was not all a dream.

South Wales and West of England Cairn Terrier Club Championship Show 15 October 2021

It was a great pleasure to be invited to judge the South Wales and West of England Cairn terrier club Championship Show October 15th. Thank you to the officers, committee and my stewards Lyndia & Tony Salmon who were a great help during the day.

It was my third time judging in the UK and I was very honoured and proud, I enjoyed it enormously. It was a new venue with plenty of space indoor and out. I stayed in a very nice cabin with lovely views over the area from my terrace, it was also big enough when it was getting cold for the cozy get-together after the show. The venue would also be perfect for outdoor shows with room for caravans and motorhomes.

I have to say that the overall quality of the dogs has improved a lot since my first appointment. (Back then, there were several missing teeth and many of the teeth were very small, there was lack of forechest, depth and length of rib, many lacking front and rear angulation and stop). But generally, it is the bitches who are consistently better, although my BIS was a young boy who got under my skin as soon as he entered the ring!

I did have a lot of very lovely dogs that I would love to take home!

If I am asked to judge in the UK again, I would need to do the full critique on the day, English is not my native language and sometimes it is difficult to find the right words.

The Cairn Terrier Club Championship Show.

2nd. Oct 2021.

I enjoyed my day up at Penicuik judging the Cairn Terriers. It was well worth the trip up with some quality dogs to go over. The nice entry of 45 was a bit diminished due to the dreaded Covid, the fuel problem & an outbreak of kennel cough. The enthusiasem of those present certainly made up for it and I have made a number of new friends, with the “whiskey taster” to the fore.

Thanks to my Stewards, Adam & Marie, the latter being thrown in the deep end at the last minute.

The appointment was long delayed due to the Covid restricctions, origenaly being in March 2020 – mind you, it was well worth the wait and I loved judging  your dogs – thanks for coming.

My thanks to committee of The Cairn Terrier Club for allowing me the privilege to judge this show. My thanks also to my ring steward,
Adam, who ensured everything ran smoothly. y sympathies to the exhibitors who despite  great efforts found it difficult to get the dogs
moving as something in the ring was obviously  grabbing their attention.

Nice bitch with a lovely head and expression from neat ears and well-set eyes. Good front, reach of neck on a pair of well-set shoulders. Deep ribs with well angulated rear with tail set on top. Moved around the ring with ease Coat could have been trimmed shorter on the shoulder  area? (BB & BOS)

well angulated but a bit tight. Coat in good condition.

2nd Dolan’s Whispers at Dawn at Glenrood
Difficult to separate first and second as both had many of the same attributes. They could easily change places but in the end, I just felt the rear movement of first  ipped the balance.

SKC May – postponed to 1 October – Cairn Terriers

We had a very long wait before we could enter the ring and I am sure that this was to the detriment of some exhibits, particularly the puppies, who had had a long day.

PD (1)

1 Shannon, Storr & Middlehurst’s Brenndarcy It’s Magic – cream youngster, smart and showy.  Good Cairn expression with nice dark eye and strong muzzle, correct bite.  Good bone, straight front, good depth of brisket for one so young.  Powerful hindquarters which gave excellent rear drive.  I loved him and predict a fantastic future for this young lad.  BP

J D (1)

1 Munday’s Lentrica Mystic Warrior – Quality grey brindle with a very strong, male head, broad skull.  Used his ears well.  Conformation all A1 in all respects.  Well ribbed and strong loin.  Adequate length of neck.  Well muscled rear.  Moved true and showed well and co-operated with his handler.

ND (0)

PGD (2,1)

1 Keeves’ Seveek Carry On The Dream – red brindle with a nice head with good stop.  Eyes correct as was his mouth.  A balanced male but I would prefer more depth of brisket.   Very happy showman, wagging his tail all the time.  Movement was a bit erratic, needs to settle.

LD (6,2)

1 Dennis, Goddard & Waites Good Times Ahead with Oudenarde – and I do think there are good times ahead for this upstanding two year old red brindle.  He is not a small one by any means but his other qualities are excellent.  Strong male head with broad skull and  powerful muzzle.  Mouth correct with large teeth.  He is well balanced with a level topline which he kept on the move.  He is fit with an excellent coat.  Very well presented.  He moved true both ways, very positive, and showed with animation.  RDCC.

2 Inett & Harrison’s Carradine In ‘n Out Mr Sprout – dark brindle male, smaller than winner.  Excellent head with true Cairn expression.  Strong in body with supple loin.  Straight front and good depth of brisket.  Excellent hind angulation.  A happy showman. Preferred balance of winner.

3 Miller’s Cornton Fyne Fettle

OD (2,1)

1 Felters and Rumens’ Landbuck Kingsman – dark brindle male of correct size and so well balanced.  As the Standard says he is medium in all respects.  Loved his head, short muzzle and broad skull, correct eye and neat ears used well.  Adequate neck with good flow into clean shoulders. Level topline and well ribbed.  Back of medium length.  Well muscled rear with correct angulation.  In excellent double coat which was well presented.  Stood four square and was a very happy showman.  Good rapport with handler.  Moved out confidently displaying excellent rear movement.  DCC.

VD (1)

1 Lamb and Saltmarsh’s Birselaw Dark Charmer for Macmoon Sh Cm – 7 year old grey brindle who presented a nice clean outline with a level topline and correct tailset.  Typical head and expression.  Straight front and nice lay of shoulder.  Medium in all respects and so well balanced and of correct size.  In very fit condition.  Lively showman.

SBD & GCD – 0

PB (6) 3 nice pups in this class, 2 and 3 felt the pressure of the long day I fear.

1 Waugh’s Glory Daze at Tribannon – cream bitch who excels in her showmanship.  She presents a beautiful outline and always stands four square.  Pretty, feminine head with dark eye for one so light.  Good reach of neck into clean shoulders.  Level topline which she kept on the move.  Tail carried correctly at one o clock.  Well sprung ribs, well muscled rear.  I liked her a lot but wouldn’t want her any bigger.  Moved out well.

2 Osborn’s Be Gin The Magic – Very feminine red puppy with the prettiest of heads.  Good dark eye and neat ears.  Good, but not too much bone, nice flow of neck into clean shoulders.  Medium in body and very well balanced.  Correct rear angulation with nice bend of stifle.  Moved true in front and with drive in the rear.  Liked her size and femininity, just lost out on showmanship but I am sure that with maturity this will come.

3 Percy’s Winetta Frankly My Dear

JB (3,1)

Close decision between these first and second.

1 Doonrae Rebel Rebel Among Brenndarcy – well built red brindle with a beautiful head and keen expression.  Her head is so well balanced with the correct proportions.  Neat ears and good mouth.  Adequate but not too much neck, strong back and supple loin.  Moved out well on good legs and feet.  Ideal in size for me.  Profuse coat of correct harsh texture and in good condition.  Can be a handful for her handler.

2 Jobling’s Arion Full of Sass – upstanding light red bitch who has a lot going for her.  Pretty head with typical Cairn expression.  Nice reach of neck into clean shoulders, level strong back, stood well forward on forepaws with such a good, natural stance. Nice bend of stifle, hocks well let down.  Good coat condition, moved OK when settled.

NB (1)

1 Osborn’s Tweslam Days of Magic – red bitch of correct size and excellent proportions.  Feminine head, dark, neat ears.  Straight front, level topline, good rear angulation.  Good bone.  A  first rate showgirl who moved out well.  A very well balanced bitch, nothing overdone, as it should be.

PGB (3,1)

1 Petts’ Rasken’s Joan Jett for Doonrae (Swed Imp) – quality, stylish red bitch who was very smart and showy.  Presented a lovely clean outline, conformation in all respects A1.  Appealing head and expression and she used her ears well.  Nice depth of brisket, level back of medium length, tailset correct. Moved true and showed with animation. One to watch.

2 Keeves’ Seveek Everlasting Dream – I would describe this bitch as “workmanlike.”  Upstanding and she certainly looks as though she could do a hard day’s work, very fit and in good condition.  Well made body with good spring of rib.  Has a good reach of neck with some flow, which I like to see.  Lovely outline.  Her coat is coarse but short.  She moved out well.

LB (2)

1 Munday’s Lentrica Dolly Mixture at Carernwil – grey brindle bitch of nice size.  Lovely Cairn type and very well presented.  Loved her head and expression.  Drove out well from behind.  Perhaps carrying a bit too much weight today.

2 Miller’s Cornton Fyne Hope – grey bitch who showed particularly well, responding well to handler, using her tail well.  Nice head with dark points.  Sporting a very profuse coat which perhaps detracted from her overall appearance, making her neck seem shorter than it was.

OB (7,3)

1 Kinton’s Cloverbrook Unbreakable at Woodthorpe – quality dark brindle bitch of excellent type.  Has a really feminine head with typical Cairn expression.  Straight front, strong body, deep in rib, supple in loin.  Nicely angulated and muscled rear, low hocks.  Nice size with adequate daylight underneath, well balanced.  She is another who stands four square and shows herself off so well.  Moved true in front and with strong rear propulsion.  In good coat and condition, well presented.  BCC/BOB

2 Inett, Harrison & Clayton’s Carradine Jo – very similar to winner in so many respects but perhaps a little longer in back.  Lovely reach of neck into clean shoulders.  Loved her expression, so mischievous.  Her coat was of excellent condition and she showed and was handled very well indeed.  RCC.

North of Ireland Cairn Terrier Club – Championship Show – 40th Anniversary

I would personally like to thank the Club and Committee for inviting me to judge this prestigious anniversary show, little did we all realise at the time how important it would be to us all given it being one of the first shows in 18months.

I also give thanks to all of the exhibitors who supported the show with some travelling hundreds of miles, and who gave me the honour to go over their dogs.  I think all will agree the show was managed well and very welcoming with a lovely atmosphere, made all the more special with the wonderful celebration cake and striking rosettes and award cards – great keepsakes.

Overall I was pleased with the standard of the breed, being the second show of the day it did prove tiring for some, it must be hard after lockdown having free reign and then overnight have to go back into show mode. Some like us humans had gained a bit of lockdown weight and some were in the stages of getting their coat back into show standard.

And finally I would like to thank my steward Michael who does not exhibit Cairns and gave up his time to steward the show.  He kept me on track and made the show run smoothly.

39th Breed Championship Show Held 26-09- 2021

My thanks to the Club and Committee for the invitation to judge their Club Ch Show. Club Shows are special so I was truly honoured

As the first Show to be held in Northern Ireland during Covid 19 the Committee had gone to great lengths to keep everyone safe in this super venue. On the day I was assisted by stewards Michael and Karen both so ably and quietly efficient.

Now to the main ingredient of the day -the Cairns. In spite of the fact there has been little or no dog activity for 18 months all took the day in their stride and temperaments were superb. Coats generally acceptable, all double coated,  though some in varying stages of preparedness. Heads mostly excellent and movement on the whole very good. Numerically the entry could have been better but quality abounded and there were many close decisions especially with the bitches.

JD (1) 1 CC, & BPD. Hogarty’s Cadagio Super Trooper.  Red  What a start to the day. 11 months. Most attractive head and expression with defined stop, good breadth to scull, strong muzzle, neat ears, good eye and bite. Balanced reach of neck running into clean well laid shoulders with good return of upper arm. Good legs, well padded feet. Nice spring of ribs carried well back, strong loin with firm topline and good tailset. Well angulated quarters matching forehand. Excelled on the move showing good drive and extension keeping a well balanced outline. At this age still has some maturing to do. Lovely coat excellently presented.

PGD (1) 1 & RCC Alexander’s Coharra Be More. Red. Most attractive head with dark points, lovely expression. Defined stop, good breadth of scull, strong muzzle, good for eye, ears and bite. Correct reach of neck running into clean shoulders. Stands well over forequarters. Good spring of rib carried well back, firm loin and well angulated quarters. Moved happily and soundly showing drive. Just a little rusty regarding ring presence, I expect this to improve.

LD (2)

  1. Miller’s Cornton Fyne Fettle.Dkbrindle. Pleasing expression, good eye, ear and bite. Stop could be slightly more defined. Well balanced neck running into clean shoulders, though I would prefer a better lay. Stands well, well ribbed, strong topline , good tailset. Decent hind angulation and moved with purpose. In good coat and well presented.
  2. Lamb &Satlmarsh’sBirselaw Come Dancing with Macmoon OSW, JW, SH Ch, Shcex. Dk brindle. Lovely head and expression with good eye and neat ears. Balanced neck running into clean shoulders though I would prefer a better lay. Firm topline, held on the move. Good coat, well presented. Just could be a little more purposeful on the move.

OD (3, 2abs) 1. Lamb & Saltmarsh’s Birselaw Dark Charmer for Macmoon Sh Ch. Dk Brindle. Pleasing expression , defined stop though would prefer more width to scull. Good eye, ear and bite. A shade upright in shoulder for me but does have return of upper arm and does stand correctly over forelegs. Well ribbed, firm topline, good tailset, short hocks. Moved well  maintaining a good shape, has drive but would like more extension.

VD/B (5, 3abs)

1 & BV Lamb & Satlmarsh’s Birselaw Dark Charmer for Macmoon Sh Ch.

  1. Lamb & Saltmarsh’s Renshaw There And Back Again UnderMacmoonSh Cm, Ir Vet Ch. Birthday boy today at 11 years young. Dk Brindle. Excellent coat and presentation. What an exciting pair.

NB (1) 1. Keegan’s Golden Shadow Of Loughend.Wheaten. Decent head with neat ears, good eye and bite. A shade upright in shoulder but has return and stands correctly. Good legs and feet, well ribbed, good topline and tailset. In good coat.  Lovely temperament, moved with purpose.

Enough neck leading into clean well laid shoulders with good return. Well ribbed, firm topline, good tailset and carriage. Well angulated quarters. Kept a balanced outline on the move but just notaas assertive as winner. Good coat and presentation.

LB (1)

Enough reach of neck running into clean shoulders with good return. Good legs and feet, strong topline, correct tailset, well angulated quarters. BIRMINGHAM NATIONAL DOG SHOW

September 24th

I was not really looking forward to judging but found that the breed is in a better place exhibitwise than I had anticipated. The same cannot be true about our falling number of exhibitors which is most worrying.

A proportion of the entry had poor heads. Too narrow in upper skull and lacking in a good stop with eyes too closely set. Body balance varied too. This means that the depth of body should not be deeper than the length of leg. A Cairn should never be described as compact or cobby or appear low to ground and long in body. There should be some daylight under this dog. It should appear agile with a balance between body length, height at the shoulder and leg length. Moderate is the best word to describe a Cairn.

SBD (1 – 1 Abs )

MPD  ( 1) 1 – SHANNON, STORR & MIDDLEHURST  Brenndarcy It’s Magic A delightful 6mth wheaten, with a good head, well constructed body, true and confident on the move. Promising. Reminded me of his sire whom I judged as a puppy in 2004

PD  (1 ) 1 – HOGARTY Cadagio Super Trouper11mth red br., well grown, ex. head and expression, soundly made body in good condition, strong propulsion from rear when viewed in side action. An exciting prospect. Best Puppy

JD  (2 ) 1 – THOMAS Tom Tricks Jocan Ty Cadno (Swed Imp) Here I compare the two dogs. Both moved well and true. Both showed equally well and were presented in good condition. My deciding factor here was on heads. Jocan had a better formed skull and a more typical expression.

2 – MUNDAY Lentrica Mystic Warrior

YD  (4 – 1 Abs) 1 – KEEVES Seveek Carry On The Dream. Pleasing correctly formed head with typical cheeky expression. In short coat of correct texture. Moved well if a bit too exhuberant at times.

2 – PEERS  Tweedisle Charismatic Guy Immature in head. Growing a new coat but very short at present. Carried his topline well on the move which gave him the advantage over the 3rd dog.

3 – SAICH  Lindcoly Marvellous Trevour

PGD  (3 – 1 Abs) 1 – PEERS Tweedisle Jaunty Lad gr br. Well formed head gd. Mouth and eye, correct in colour position and shape. Balanced well constructed body in good coat and condition. Moved well all ways.

LD  ( 7 – 1 Abs) 1 – WEINBERGER Cruzo Chorister with Correnie gr.br. Correct head with very good stop, mouth and eye, on the tall side but with ex body balance, level topline held well, correct ribcage, pleasing hind quarters. True movement.

2 – DENNIS, GODDARD & WAITES Good Times Ahead with Oudenarde red br. nicely constructed head and expression, well placed eyes and good mouth. Strong outline, moved well. I was splitting hairs here as both dogs were equally good. The deciding factor was the keener expression of the 1st but I could see them changing places another day.

3 – INETT & HARRISON Carradine In ‘n Out Mr Sprout

OD  (4 ) 1 – FIRTH Ch Cairngold Chico JW very smart red, attractive head, dk eye and good expression, sufficient bone, correct front, good reach of neck with the length of leg I like to see. Clean outline held well at all times. Today moved with good drive, ex showman. CC

VD  (1 – 1Abs )

SBB  (3 ) 1 ¬– MCINTYRE Cannwood Celtic Charm ,cr dk pts, lovely typical head and expression, in good coat, moved well both ways.

2 ¬– HIAM Carradine Dottie, head not quite as pleasing as 1st and smaller in stature. In good body condition. very free in movement

3 – METCALF-SAULT  Cannwood Quiet Reflections

MPB  ( 3 – 2 Abs) 1 – BUBB Wandris Strike A Light gr br, with a pleasing head construction, good mouth and eyes. level topline held well, moved better in front than behind.

PB  (4 ) 1 – KEEVES  Seveek License To Dream ,red br.11mths at the leggy stage but balanced  immature body. level topline and gd. tailset. Head proportions all correct if short of furnishings, short coat of good quality, true mover but a bit of a handful to show.BPB

2 – OSBORN Tweslam Be Gin The Magic (AI) 9 mth red wh. very pretty feminine head of typical proportions, mouth and eye also good, small ears well positioned, in good correct coat. She also was a handful as she was not always as one with her handler. Moved better in front than behind and not the topline of 1st.

3 –  SAICH Lindcoly Turning Back Time

JB  ( 3 ) 1 – SOPER  Elitecharm Showgirl wh br. aptly named showing well at all times. Pleasing head, not a big bitch but has a well balanced body, short of coat at present. Strode out well in tune with her handler.

2 – SHANNON – Doonrae Rebel Rebel Among Brenndarcy, again aptly named for a different reason from 1st. red br. with a truly lovely head and expression in ex coat, does not have quite the scope of 1st but in many ways typical of the breed. Movement o k.

3 – SAICH Miss A Lindcoly Ocean Dream

YB  ( 7 – 1 Abs) 1 – PETTS Rasken’s Joan Jett for Doonrae (Swed Imp) red wh. feminine head of good proportions and construction, well made balanced body with ex angulations and well developed second thigh enabling her to move  true and with great ease and this was my deciding factor in giving her the RCC

2 – OSBORN Tweslam Days of Magic  red dk pts, upstanding bitch with clean balanced outline. well formed  head, mouth, eye colour, coat and body all correct. Moved well enough to gain this position in a good competitive class.

3 ¬ – KEEVES Seveek Everlasting Dream

PGB  ( 6 – 3 Abs )I found this class difficult to judge for varying reasons.

1 – BUBB Hjohoo’s How Easy Hjo Please Me (Swed Imp) dk br feminine bitch with a well made head gd. Stop, eye colour and mouth. Presented in good coat and body condition.moved with freedom in side gait and showed well

2 – BATEMAN & RAVENHILL Carradine Mon Mon Sherry, pleasing head, in good coat Did not always carry her topline well on the move .This also applied to the 3rd in this class.

3 – METCALF-SAULT Cannwood Call Me Aggie

LB  ( 6 – 1 Abs) 1 –  CLARKE Cairngold Chakira by Lentrica, cream, with a pretty and feminine head of good construction, everything correct, balanced body of ex proportions, strong clean outline, presented in peak condition in both body and coat, moved around the ring showing her excellent topline  and true quality. BCC,BOB and G1 in the Terrier Group. Well done!

2 –  FIRTH Cairngold Chiquitita red dk pts. So like her litter sister and so unlucky to meet her on a day she was on top form. Everything correct from nose to tail, gd. balanced body and ex .movement but unlike her sister she was distracted by the posters on the walls and therefore did not give the performance of her sister. A lovely bitch nevertheless.

3 – BATEMAN Carradine Fizz Bomb

OB  ( 10 – 4 Abs) 1 – THOMAS Tycadno Yours Truly br. so lovely and difficult to fault, a slightly heavier type than I usually prefer but here she could not be denied this placing. Her head is gorgeous and so typical in expression. She handles so well on the table with everything correct. Her bearing and movement was faultless so true and powerful as she moved around the ring. She also showed well to win this excellent class.

2 – YATES-JOHNSON  Pendley Dinah gr br. A lighter built bitch with a typical and correct head  and expression, well made body of good proportion. Presented well. level topline good tailset. Moved very well in profile but made a few erratic movements fore and aft—so was not as consistent here as the 1st but has so many good qualities.

BOURNEMOUTH – 2021

CAIRN TERRIER

Since I last judged the breed in my opinion the depth of quality in the breed has deteriorated. I thought the best dogs were in the top three bitch classes. Many dogs looked good standing but failed in movement. I feel the breed is becoming too ‘narrow’, the breed standard calls for “well sprung deep ribs”, these are sorely lacking in many. Many shown with not enough body on them. The hindquarters are also quite narrow, lacking in strength and reducing the driving action. In many today their coats were not in the best condition, I understand exhibitors trying to save the coat for future shows, but it’s sometimes better to take the ‘dead’ coat out!

JD (1) 1 Thomas’ Tom Tricks Johan Tycadno. Wheaten youngster of a nice size and shape. He has a nice head, dark eye and keen expression. He has a decent spring of rib and depth of body. Well made hindquarters with a good tailset. Moved well behind but needs to tighten up in front movement. Coat not in top condition, but a happy showman and needs time too mature further.

PGD (3, 2) 1 Byrne’s Carradine Howzat Howard. Red brindle with a masculine head and expression. Good in neck and shoulder, pleasing front. Mature body, nice overall shape and correct tailset. Took him a couple of tries moving but showed he can move correctly. Coat not at its best like many, showy boy.

LD (5, 1) 1 Inett & Harrison’s Carradine In ’N Out Mr Sprout. Dark brindle boy of a nice size, all male with an assertive attitude. Nice head, dark eye, well defined stop with well placed ears. Good length of neck, angulated shoulders and level back, correct in loin. Mature body with a good spring of rib. Strongly well made hindquarters, correct in tailset. In very nice coat and condition, moved and showed well. CC & BOB.

2 Parker-Tucker’s Tom Trick’s Incredibly Ilay Of Uniquecottage. I liked this boy too, he has a very nice head, good stop and dark eye and well placed ears. Clean outline and overall shape. Good in neck and shoulder, mature body. In nice coat and a sound mover. Showed well and deserved the RCC.

3 Brookes’ Seveek Danish Delight At Zetamaz.

SBD/B (2) 1 Hiam’s Carradine Dottie. Copper brindle girl. Nice size and shape with a very, feminine head and expression. Good level back, nice body with a decent spring of rib for her age. A lively mover and showed well, carrying a decent coat. 2 McIntyre’s Cannwood Quiet Whisper. Wh/brindle, good for size and shape. She has a nice head, a good body and balanced outline. Moved fairly well but lost out to first on coat.

MPB (4, 1) 1 Bubb’s Wandris Strike A Light. A well grown silver, she has a nice head and expression, needs to develop further. Would prefer more width all through and needs to carry more body condition. She has a nice outline, level back standing and moving, correct tailset. A steady mover and in a good coat.

2 Goldfinch’s Kanawha Never Say Never. Wheaten, I liked her very much but her outline was spoilt by the hump in her topline due to coat. She has a nice feminine head, good expression and well placed ears. Well made in front quarters and hindquarters, can drive off when settled. Needs more practice, promising puppy.

3 Osborn’s Tweslam Be Gin The Magic.

PB (1) 1 Saich’s Lindcoly Turn Back Time. Just seven and a half months old this silver brindle has a nicely balanced shape. Pleasing size, good head and expression for her age. Good in neck and shoulder, nice straight front. Nicely made body, well made hindquarters and moved with drive. In a nice coat, showed well for a baby. My BP and nice to hear she took PG2.

JB (4, 1) 1 Shannon & Storr’s Doonrae Rebel Rebel Among Brenndarcy. Another with a nice balanced shape and size. She has a nice head with a good stop and keen expression, good length of neck. Well made body, level back and good tailset. In good coat and condition, moving soundly and showed well.

2 Soper’s Elitecharm Showgirl. Wh/b. She has a very nice head and expression. Has a nice mature body and overall shape, good front and well made hindquarters, she is a lively free mover, shows well. Let down today by coat condition, thanks to her understanding owner.

3 Saich’s Lindcoly Day By Day.

PGB (9, 1) I’m sure the first five will change places many times, nice quality.

1 Hooton & Hughes Penticharm It’s My Party. Silver/wh of obvious quality, very feminine outlook. Ideal shape and size. I liked her head and expression, good reach of neck that blends into well angulated shoulders, straight front. Level back, good tailset. Mature body, good spring of rib, well made hindquarters. In a good coat, just would have preferred more width when she moved away. Steady showgirl.

2 Keeves’ Seveek Everlasting Dream. Another silver/wh with lots of quality. Mature outlook, very pleasing head and expression, well defined stop. Good for length of neck, well made shoulders, level back and correct tailset. Well made body with a good spring of rib, in a decent coat and moving well both ways.

3 Harrison’s Carradine Mary.

LB (3) 1 Inett, Harrison & Clayton’s Carradine Jo. This silver with dark points appealed to me today for good type, reminded me so much of Ch Heshe Charmer. I really liked her head, well defined stop, correct ear placement. Good neck that blended into a level back, correct shoulder angulation, straight front. Mature body with a good spring of ribs and depth. Well made hindquarters with a good turn of stifle, correct in tailset. She was in a very good coat of the correct harsh texture, a nice sound mover both ways and showed well. CC, BOS.

2 Firth’s Cairngold Chiquitita. Red girl, nice for type, just a little taller than first. Very alert girl, she has a very feminine head with a keen expression. Good reach of neck, level back with a correct tailset. Well made hindquarters, moves well both ways, in nice coat and condition, showed well.

3 Kinton’s Cloverbrook Unbreakable At Woodthorpe.

OB (5) 1 Yates-Johnson’s Pendleton Dinah. Grey of obvious quality and type. Nice for size and shape, very appealing head and expression. Good length of neck, good level back. Well made body with correct spring of ribs. Well made hindquarters with plenty of strength, knows how to use them. Moved well both ways, showed well. RCC.

2 Goldfinch’s Tycadno Bright Star For Kanawha. Grey/wh with a nice head and keen expression. Good length of neck, well made in shoulders, level back. Mature body with a good spring of rib, nice overall shape. Well made hindquarters and moving well.

Cairn Terriers – Paignton 2021

It was a delight and fun to judge this wonderful breed and I thank you all for your entries. Not the easiest venue to get to for some and I appreciate the time, money and effort of keeping and entering a coated terrier breed in the correct coat and condition. There was enough quality in the entry to select some lovely winners. Good luck to everyone at the future shows.

1st: 1185 MUNDAY, Miss S Lentrica Mystic Warrior. What a cracker to start with. Quality upstanding youngster. Balanced and in proportion. His brindle jacket was in great condition and presented well. Very pleasing through a clean head, correct skull, good sized eye and small ears. Carried on a decent neck. Stood well forward on a correctly angled front. Well bodied through deep ribbing. Stood four square at all times.  Strong rear. Covered the ground very well, true and clean from all angles. Sporting a thick abundant jacket to complete the picture. Certainly active and game, He however does need to curb a little of his enthusiasm in the ring and concentrate on the job in hand, I am sure this will come in time. Nice to see him awarded with a puppy group 4 later, even though he again was in naughty mode. Bright future ahead. RCC & BP.

Judge Neil Straw (Shaolin)

Great to be back with you all since 2017 and appreciated the sporting atmosphere. Have just one aspect that concerned me, namely since when was Cairn a short legged cob, even allowing for the grass? Five absent from the 29 exhibits.

PD (1) 1 Munday’s Lentrica Mystic Warrior. 11 mths, immediately impressed as he stood his ground, taking it all in and standing well forward so as to naturally display his medium leg and back length, excellent head and eye with a definite stop and strong muzzle, medium neck, level, good bone, feet correctly placed, good in rib with depth, harsh, dark brindle jacket, well turned hindquarters, well placed tail and carriage, absolutely sound with a free-flowing stride and with reach and drive that challenged his handler. An exciting youngster with so many breed specifics all combining to annex Res DCC as well as BPIB.

PGD (2, 1) 1 Dennis, Goddard & Waites’ Good Times Ahead With Oudenarde. Bang on 2 yrs, wheaten, correctly small and slightly rounded head with a definite stop, eye rather small, good mouth and teeth, muzzle a touch narrow, good neckline, so clean in front with a deep well sprung rib, so outgoing on the move, albeit a fraction long, with an exceptional, sound action that was a joy to watch, excellent jacket.

LD (4, 1) 1 Shopland’s Cherrycrack Moonreakur. 22 mths, what I loved most about him was that, with his well forward stance, he gave me daylight underneath him, very good head with an excellent eye set well apart, and like a medium, dark almond, body of medium length as with his neck, good balanced angles, harsh double coat, so sound on the move with correctly angled tail carriage, will take some beating with more maturity.

2 Brookes’ Seveek Danish Delight At Zetamaz. 21 mths dark brindle, much to like, well placed facial features to give typical expression, well ribbed and strong loin, overall of a sturdier type, showing less daylight so as to rather bowl along in front but with good propulsion off a firm hock and correct tail carriage.

3 Lamb & Saltmarsh’s Birselaw Come Dancing With Macmoon OSW JW ShCEx Sh.

OD (4) 1 Firth, Firth & Firth’s Ch Cairngold Chico JW. 4 yrs, red, relatively small head with breadth to slightly rounded skull plus excellent features and proportions, especially in ear and eye, mouth with good teeth, not in best jacket but of good texture and with undercoat, correct length, correct clearance, propelled himself so well on the move with reach and drive with a correctly angled tail. DCC.

2 Felters & Rumens’ Landbuck Kingsman. Just on 3 yrs, described as red brindle, a glorious type so as to fill the eye, well furnished head, perfect ears, dark hazel eye, strong muzzle with large teeth, harsh weather resistent coat, correct length of back, good outline and tail carriage on the move, good drive in rear but weak in front, particularly at pastern. 3 Harrison’s Carradine Whiskey Oscar.

VD (1) 1 Lamb & Saltmarsh’s Renshaw There And Back Again Under Macmoon ShCM. Rising 11 yrs, truly amazing, black double coat fitting the ‘shaggy not shabby’ description, glorious head with breadth of skull and strength of muzzle plus excellent bite with large teeth all present and correct, could draw a line through tip of ear via centre of dark eye to his black nose, balanced angulation without exaggeration, level, well ribbed with depth, albeit a touch heavy now, gave a demonstration of sound, active movement with balanced reach and drive, had fully expected him to be titled. BVIB.

SBD/B (2, 1) 1 Jobling’s Ariom Full Of Sass. 16 mth quality youngster, lovely feminine head with some breadth of skull, ideal eye and ears, correct body length and degree of tail carriage, excellent jacket, well presented, so sound with reach and drive, her first-timer handler grew in confidence, accepting all the advice given; above all else she can relax knowing that she has bred a ‘good un’ and they have a great future together as they both mature on. MPB (2) 1 Bubb’s Wandris Strike A Light. 6 mths, golden brindle, quality, unphased baby, desirable, small, feminine, slightly rounded head, prefer larger eye, enviable ears, definite stop, well set on neck, excellent length/height proportions, well turned quarters, youthfully high angled tail carriage, so sound and free flowing. One to watch. BPB. 1 Percy’s Winetta Frankly My Dear. 7 mths, loved her dark almond eye of medium size, albeit set in a narrower head and muzzle, good in neck and angles, well ribbed, plenty of scope about her to mature on to advantage.

PB (1) 1 Lund, Lund, Lund & Long’s Lentrica Hocus Pocus By Jorvikairn. 10 mths, described as sable/gold/brindle, pretty headed with good, well placed facial features, medium neck into a well angulated shoulder, excellent back end, harshly coated, can just firm in front, coming on, but drove off a firm hock to give a typical outline as she circuited, very promising.

JB (3) 1 Soper’s Elitecharm Showgirl. 15 mths, so feminine and typy and unexaggerated so that all is coming together already for this teenager, broad skull, excellent eye, definite stop, good proportions, well ribbed, harsh coat, hock well let down so as to propel herself forward, strode out well, one with an assured future if she simply continues along these same lines.

2 Joblin’s Ariom Full Of Sass.

3 Shannon & Storr’s Doonrae Rebel Rebel Among Brenndarcy.

PGB (2) 1 Hooton & Hughes’ Penticharm It’s My Party. Bang on 3 yrs, wheaten brindle, loved everything about her, attractive head with excellent eye and ear, medium neck into well laid shoulder, good proportions of length/height with enough daylight beneath, good jacket, held her shape on the move and came on so well, bred in the purple and Birselaw sired with every prospect of quickly moving up the ranks.

2 Petts’ Rasken’s Joan Jett For Doonrae (Imp Swe). 20 mths, a wheaten, albeit started out life as a red brindle, showing lots of promise, lovely eye, small, well set ears, good neckline into a well constructed body, excellent backend so as to push forwards, just that bit longer cast, being a teenager, that maturity will address.

LB (4) 1 Firth, Firth & Firth’s Cairngold Chiquitita. Two and a half yrs, guess I was the only one present unaware I was putting up litter sisters, as sired by the DCC. I rated them both as of CC quality, has breed type in abundance, lovely head with well placed features, strong muzzle, good neck and forehand with some width, correct length, balanced rear angulation, ideal 60% tail carriage, moved out soundly once settled. Res BCC.

2 Clarke’s Cairngold Chakira White. Two and a half yrs wheaten of such quality, understandably of the same excellent type, fabulous head that is correctly small and in proportion to her body, eye and ears correctly spaced, breadth in skull, definite stop, strong muzzle, good bone and feet, clean fronted, may have just been outperformed by her slightly more forward sister but well capable of gaining her revenge being also of CC standard.

3 Bubb’s Hjohoo’s How Easy Hjo Please Me (Imp Swe).

OB (5) 1 Kinton’s Cloverbrook Unbreakable At Woodthorpe. Two and a half yrs grey brindle, she ticked so many of my boxes, not least with her textbook proportions, the way she stood ‘well forward’ so ensuring plenty of daylight beneath her and her natural, shaggy appearance, expressive head that is broad and slightly rounded, well carried ears, excellent eye, definite stop, strong muzzle, medium neck, well angulated, harsh double coat, so beautifully balanced on the move with reach and drive and pushing off her hocks, bred in the purple and learned later I previously awarded her sire BOB. BCC and BOB.

2 Lund & Lund’s Caringold Brandy Snap By Jorvikairn. 4 yrs, red brindle, another ‘clone’, being litter sister of the DCC, so feminine and typy with ‘scope’, so nothing is overbuilt, small, well set ear, good stop and muzzle, eyes a little close, good in neck and forehand, level, correct length and tail carriage, excellent double jacket, well bodied with firm loin, moved out well and true. CC quality.

3 Smith’s Cannwood Misty Dawn At Gethlee.

Southern Counties Championship Dog Show

27th June 2021

Cairn Terrier Judge’s Report

The first Championship Show for 15 months was approached by all with some understandable apprehension and was an enormous undertaking for Southern Counties Canine Association, I thank them for offering me this appointment following the cancellation of their 2020 show. I would also like to thank my very efficient steward who kept everything flowing smoothly. For me it was a day of privilege, huge responsibility and a big surprise.

My steward and I had agreed some time ago to make it as safe and comfortable as possible for our exhibitors some of whom have had a really tough time over the last year. We may have gone over and above what was required but we felt everybody deserved respect.

It is four years since I last judged so almost without exception all the dogs were ‘new’ to me, despite lockdown all were confident and showing well. However the general condition of some was not as good as it should be and several were not well muscled.  Cairns are a working terrier and as such should give the impression of being fit for purpose. Unfortunately hind movement has not improved and in fact seems to have deteriorated. Coats as always at different stages, but they should always be tidy and clean. Mouths/teeth were fine although I did find one exhibit with rather lighter eyes than desirable.

My DCC/BOB was a fine upstanding already established Champion, great ambassador for the breed, RDCC rather smaller dog but a real extrovert. The surprise was my BCC/BP, just 8 months she outshone her older sister who took the RBCC.

  2. Shannon & Storrs’ DOONRAE REBEL REBEL AMONG BRENDARCY

PGB    5          1. Hooton & Hughes’ PENTICHARM IT’S MY PARTY

  1. Keeves SEVEEK EVERLASTING DREAMS Lovely head with dark eye, would like a little more bone however correctly made and balanced, bit reticent on the table. New coat will help.
  2. Parker-Tucker’s UNIQUECOTTAGE SILVER SOLO

LB       6          1. Firth’s CAIRNGOLD CHIQUITITA       Another red from this kennel, attractive head with good stop, large teeth and dark eye. Standing well forward with correct lay back of shoulders into level top line and well set on tail, completely balanced. In excellent coat, she moved true.

  1. Kinton’sCLOVERBROOK UNBREAKABLE AT WOODTHORPE Another attractive feminine bitch with lovely head, well defined stop and good expression. Correct front, shoulders and length making a balance outline. Not moving so well today as 1 but showed well, her coat not at its best.
  2. Inett, Clayton & Harrisons’ CARRADINE JO

OB      6(1)      1. Dolan’s WHISPERS AT DAWN AT GLENROOD JW I have long admired this bitch and I was    not disappointed. Very feminine, super head and expression, best of fronts and shoulders, level top line retained on the move, she covers the ground well with good reach. Presented in good coat. Unfortunately today she didn’t sparkle in the Challenge as I know she can and was outshone by her very much younger sister. RCC

  1. Ballinger’s CLOVERBROOK MAID FOR GOLD Another attractive bitch, good head and expression, correct front, neck and shoulders into a very level back and balanced outline. Today her coat was not at its best.
  2. Yates-Johnson’s PENDLEY DINAH
